Publication number: 20120023790Abstract: A hand-held cloth iron becomes very hot while in use. Even when cool, it is heavy and has sharp corners. Any of these characteristics can cause injury or damage if the iron falls. An improved iron includes a heel rest connected to the rear of the iron body. One or more permanent magnet pieces embedded in the heel rest produce a magnetic pull force between the magnets and the ferromagnetic steel top of an ironing board when the iron is stood on its heel. The magnets are strong enough to stabilize the iron, even on a board with a padded cover, without impractically impeding the operator's normal ironing motions. The magnetic rear plate can either be coplanar or slightly recessed with respect to the outer surface of the heel rest, and the amount of recess can be made adjustable by mechanical means so that the magnetic pull force between the magnetic heel rest and the ferromagnetic steel top of an ironing board can be adjusted by a user to suit his or her preference.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 27, 2010Publication date: February 2, 2012Inventor: Hong S. Patent number: 6263597Abstract: The invention pertains to an ironing system including an ironing board and an iron operated on a top surface of the ironing board in the process of ironing a fabric on the ironing board. Included in the system is a device for keeping the electric cord of the electric iron a distance above the ironing board so that the electric cord cannot interfere with a fabric that already has been ironed. The device also keeps the electric cord of the iron from being singed or burned by the hot sole of the iron. The device includes a tensioned coil spring through which the electric cord passes to the iron as it is kept in an elevated position. The coils of the tension coil spring are close and adjacent to each when the coil spring is in a rest position. A slight extension of the tension coil spring will induce a retracting force in the spring so that the electric cord will be withdrawn into the tension spring coil and away from the iron.Type: GrantFiled: November 6, 2000Date of Patent: July 24, 2001Inventor: Leopold Bric

Patent number: 5926984Abstract: To permit easy attachment, removal, and repositioning of a rest plate of a potentially hot flat iron on an ironing board (1, 31), forming an accessory element, the iron rest plate (4, 37) is placed above the ironing board, which typically includes a padding (34, 35). The attachment to the board is by a cam or eccenter clamp (3, 36) which has a portion (6, 39) extending and projecting beneath a rim of the ironing board (1, 31), and essentially partly in alignment with the iron rest plate above the ironing board. The accessory is U-shaped, with the iron rest plate (4, 37) above the ironing board, a connecting carrier portion (38) essentially at the base of the U, and a clamping portion extending beneath the ironing board and beyond the edge thereof, which typically is a channel or similar construction projecting downwardly from the plane of the ironing board. The clamping portion reaches behind this edge and thus, essentially, is in part-alignment with the iron rest plate (4, 37).Type: GrantFiled: February 11, 1998Date of Patent: July 27, 1999Assignee: Leifheit AGInventor: Gerhard Zuber

Patent number: 5120934Abstract: A cordless electric iron assembly has an iron removably mounted on a power supply stand adapted to be connected to a power supply. Separable mating electric terminals interposed between the iron and stand establish an electrical connection between the electric heater in the iron and the stand so long as the iron is placed on the stand. A detector on the stand detects the presence or absence of the iron on the stand and is used to activate an adjustable counter in response to removal of the iron from the stand. The counter activates an audible alarm after the elapse of a predetermined time period during which the iron is removed from the stand and in use to signal that the iron should be returned to the stand for reheating. A carrying case is detachable from the stand and accommodates the iron positioned on the stand with the mating terminals connected for storage of the iron during non-use.Type: GrantFiled: October 4, 1988Date of Patent: June 9, 1992Assignee: Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd.Inventors: Seiichi Nakada, Takahisa Tsuji, Toyohiko Yagi, Masao Shimizu, Yoshinori Kataoka

Patent number: 4366366Abstract: A stand for an electric iron incorporates an automatic time delay safety switch arrangement which reduces the chances of fires being started by an unattended iron and serves to save a substantial amount of electric energy by cutting off the current to the iron when it is left turned-on but unattended. The stand includes a hinged, spring biased platform of insulating material for supporting an electric iron during non-use periods. Placement of the iron on the platform causes the platform to pivot closing a normally open switch. Closure of the switch energizes a standard electrically energized time delay relay mounted on the platform. After lapse of a predetermined time period, the time delay relay actuates a manually resettable electric relay from a first condition allowing the electric iron to be energized from a power supply socket on the platform to a second latched condition whereby the iron is deenergized.Type: GrantFiled: September 5, 1980Date of Patent: December 28, 1982Inventor: Carl A. Patent number: 3967802Abstract: A safety stand is described for an iron having heated portions and a handle. The stand includes a substantially enclosed housing for receiving the iron and covering the heated portions thereof. The housing has an opening in the upper region thereof dimensioned to permit insertion into and removal of the iron from the housing. The housing is configurated to conform to the exterior shape of the iron and dimensioned to receive the iron with little clearance to prevent excessive movement of the iron when disposed within the housing. The handle of the iron continues to be exposed at least partially through the housing opening to permit the same to be gripped for removal of the iron from the housing. Mounting means, in the form of two planar members having hook-shaped ends, is provided for securely fixing the housing to an ironing board. Advantageously, locking means is provided for preventing inadvertent movement of the iron from the housing.Type: GrantFiled: September 4, 1974Date of Patent: July 6, 1976Inventor: Marcel Lomagno
