Variable Time Delay Modulation Of Baseband Video Signal Patents (Class 380/218)
  • Patent number: 12153706
Abstract: In the field of payment terminals, a new generation of feature-rich payment terminals is emerging. These payment terminals are mass-produced and the level of security provided for data entry operations is low because the primary function of these communication terminals is not the entry of sensitive data. As a result, the data relating to payment transactions entered via these payment terminals are entered with a level of security that is not adequate as regards the sensitivity of the data entered. Accordingly, a communication terminal is provided, which secures data entered via a user interface of a communication terminal, by transmitting them among a stream of dummy data, and by encrypting all data, those actually entered by a user and the dummy data, before the transmission thereof to a secure data processing device.

  • Patent number: 8903091
Abstract: A secure optical communication system and method are disclosed. Short optical pulses are first modulated with data, then dispersed in time so that they spread out over multiple bit periods, then the desired code is applied to the dispersed pulses. The encoding may include frequency shifts or phase shifts or other. The dispersed optical symbols overlap in time so an applied code chip thus acts on multiple symbols simultaneously. There are generally multiple code chips per dispersed symbol. The coding device does not need to be synchronized to the data rate. Multiple wavelength division multiplexed channels may be encoded simultaneously. The signal propagates to a decoder that is synchronized with encoder to apply a complementary code thereby canceling out the effect of the encoder. The encoder and decoder can be realized by varying the wavelength of an optical pump to a parametric amplifier, allowing for a wide-band frequency shift.

Abstract: An apparatus and method for displaying a copy-deterrent pattern (104) within a digital motion picture in order to discourage recording of the motion picture using a video camera or other sampling recording device. A copy-deterrent pattern (104) could be, for example, one or more symbols, a random pattern, a digital watermark or a text message (106). The copy-deterrent pattern (104) comprises a plurality of pixels within each frame of the digital motion picture, and the displayed pixel intensities are modulated at a temporal frequency using modulation characteristics deliberately selected to be imperceptible to human observers while simultaneously producing objectionable aliasing in any copy made using a video camera.

  • Patent number: 6711261
Abstract: An improved method and apparatus for maintaining concealment for a scrambled signal when frequency pre-emphasis is used to defeat the scrambling. The pre-emphasis may be synthesized with high pass or peaking circuitry. More commonly however the pre-emphasis is available in television sets with a fine tuning control. By adjusting the fine tuning control to cause purposely mistuning off center, a peaking effect is generated which is used to counter the scrambled signal. The application discloses one embodiment which uses de-emphasis to counter the peaking effect. In another embodiment, signals added in the vicinity of the horizontal blanking interval causes the peaking effect to enhance these added signals over stable edges of the video signal. Since these added signals are position modulated for example, the television's sync circuits and horizontal oscillator circuits will cause scan circuits to generate position modulation.

Abstract: A selective encryption encoder consistent with certain embodiments of the invention has vertical and/or horizontal stripes encrypted. In one embodiment, packets are examined in the digital video signal to identify a specified packet type, the specified packet type being both packets carrying intra-coded data representing a pattern of horizontal stripes across an image and packets carrying intra-coded data representing a pattern of vertical stripes across an image. The packets identified as being of the specified packet type are encrypted using a first encryption method to produce first encrypted packets. These first encrypted packets are then used to replace the unencrypted packets in the digital video signal to produce a partially encrypted video signal. The packets of the specified type can also be multiple encrypted and replaced in the data stream to produce a multiple encrypted video data stream.

Abstract: A selective encryption encoder has a packet identifier that identifies packets of a specified packet type forming a part of a program. A packet duplicator duplicates the identified packets to produce first and second sets of the identified packets. A PMT (program map table) inserter generates temporary identifying information that identifies the first and second sets of identified packets inserts the temporary identifying information as user private data in a program map table (PMT) forming a part of the transport program specific information (PSI). The data are then sent to and received from a primary encryption encoder to encrypt the first set of identified packets under a first encryption method. A secondary encrypter encrypts the second set of identified packets under a second encryption method. The PSI is then modified at a PSI modifier to remove the temporary identifying information and to correctly associate the first and second sets of identified packets and the unencrypted packets with the program.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for permitting global roaming between two communication networks which utilize different authentication schemes. The authentication interoperability function (AIF) and method translate between the authentication schemes of each network, for example, a triplet-based network and a shared secret data (SSD) network. When a user from a network that natively uses SSD authentication roams into a triplet-based network, the authentication interoperability function produces triplets from the current SSD. When a triplet user roams into an SSD network, the AIF produces SSD from the triplet.

Abstract: Various techniques and associated embodiments are disclosed for providing defensive measures against “black boxes,” wherein the techniques utilize unconventional schemes for detecting the vertical blanking interval (VBI) of a video signal containing a copy protection signal. The unconventional schemes would be of particular interest to the black boxes, which must locate the VBI to generate a vertical rate signal in order to perform the task of illegally removing the copy protection signal. The unconventional schemes utilize the particular characteristics or peculiarities of the video signals in the VBI to detect the VBI and generate therefrom a reliable vertical or frame rate signal. The characteristics include various pulse spacings and/or pulse widths which may occur in specific lines in the VBI, and which may be detected to allow deriving the reliable vertical or frame rate signal.

Abstract: A motion-picture distributor (12) uses a computer system (22) to convert video signals from a master film (14) into serial video data (41) complying with DVD-Video standards. Further, the computer system (22) modifies the sequence of scene-data sets (42-1, 42-2, . . . ) constituting the data (41) and encrypts the data for each scene-data set, thus producing encrypted non-serial video data (45). The data (45) are separated into DVD-ROMs (15-1, 15-2, . . . ), for distribution purposes. A theater (13) then uses a serialization apparatus (51) to read the data (45) from the DVD-ROMs (15-1, 15-2, . . . ), and sorts the scene-data sets in a correct sequence, thus producing encrypted serial video data (80). A motion picture projector (52) decrypts the data (80), thereby preparing the data (41). The data (41) are played back to view a movie. On the other hand, a movie distributor (12) may distribute the DVD-ROMs in a separated manner.

  • Patent number: 6198822
Abstract: An enhanced scrambled video signal, method for making an enhanced scrambled video signal and apparatus for enhanced scrambling of a video signal are all characterized by a pattern added to a video signal. The pattern is formed from a pair of segments, including a black segment and a white segment which forms a high contrast transition therebetween. The transitions vary in horizontal location from one horizontal line to the next. The pattern causes an unauthorized television receiver to mistakenly lock onto the transitions in the pattern, as if the transitions represented horizontal sync signals, thus scrambling the video display. The apparatus for inserting the pattern may be formed by a sync detector, a video amplifier, a multiplexor and a control logic device. The video amplifier sets the video signal to a DC reference level. The sync detector detects the horizontal sync of the video signal which is sent from the video amplifier.
