  • Patent number: 7469051
Abstract: An intelligent automatic volume control technique (100) for a communication device is provided that takes a measurement of the background audio environment at the time a user manually selects the volume (102, 104). A user preference is established for the volume setting relative to the background audio level being experienced (106). The informational relationship is stored and used for automatic volume control (108). When the background noise changes (110), the automatic volume control makes an intelligent decision on changing the volume (116). The current background noise level, the initial user volume setting and the background noise level when that volume was set are all used in the volume change decision making process.

Abstract: An apparatus and method for automatically detecting an audio signal and sending a control signal are provided. The present invention is for automatically detecting an audio signal from a conventional IC, and controlling the power amplifier of the driving speaker or the switch of other external circuit. The apparatus at least includes an audio detection circuit and a reset/delay circuit. The audio detection circuit is connected to an audio signal from a conventional IC to detect the presence of the audio signal. The reset/delay circuit, after receiving an output signal from the audio detection circuit, can either reset the reset/delay circuit, or send a control signal after delaying for a period of time. The apparatus of the present invention can also be integrated into the external circuit, such as a power amplifier, to simplify the control to the external circuit by the conventional IC so as to switch off the external circuit to save power when there is no presence of the audio signal.

Abstract: The invention relates to a Muting Circuit used to control the path of signal flow for the amplified audio signals from an audio CODEC in a dual audio subsystem. More specifically, to the muting control of the rear and front panel head phone/line out and microphone connectors for the audio subsystem of a standard PC system. The present invention implements muting on the headphone 1 line-out jacks while allowing the Front Audio Board to be optional without the need for jumpers.

Abstract: The invention provides a component selection control system comprising signal output components 2 to 5, signal input components 4, 5, and an amplifier unit 1 having these components 2 to 5 connected thereto. The signal output components 2 to 5 have respective on-off switches 23, 33, 44, 54 provided on signal output lines 73 to 76 for delivering audio signals to the amplifier unit 1 therethrough, and the amplifier unit 1 has a common input terminal g. The signal output lines 73 to 76 of the output components 2 to 5 are connected to one another at a point connected to a common signal line 71, which is connected to the common input terminal g of the amplifier unit 1. This arrangement greatly reduces the numbers of signal lines and terminals required for connecting the components 2 to 5 to the amplifier unit 1.

  • Patent number: 7123729
Abstract: In a signal processing system with an IC having an intrinsic signal provided at a pin of the IC, a first operational function (de-emphasis) for the signal is provided at the pin, and further along in the signal flow path, a second operational function (variable attenuation) for the signal is provided within the IC. An extrinsic signal is switchably coupled to the pin so that the second operational function can be used to operate on the extrinsic signal. The second signal is coupled to the pin at a low source impedance so that when the second signal is switched to be operational, the first operational function is defeated, and the first signal is severely attenuated. When the circuit is switched to not couple the second signal to the pin, the coupling path for the second signal and the low source impedance are both removed, thus restoring the first operational function and the first signal at the pin of the IC.

  • Patent number: 7110839
Abstract: This invention provides a speaker system that minimizes the number of wires used to provide power and audio signal to all of the speakers. This is accomplished by without generating interference noises from shared signal wire implementations. The invention also provides a methodology for reducing power signals from being transmitted to headphones inserted into a headphone jack. The invention may use four wires to operate the speaker system. A first wire may be used to provide the control data signal common and control power common, and, if a headphone is used, the first wire may also serve as a common ground connection for the earpieces in the headphone. The second wire may provide a substantially constant current, so that constant current may be carried in the first wire regardless of the voltage on the second power/data wire. This way, the first wire may serve as a common control circuitry and the headphone as well.

  • Patent number: 7103189
Abstract: An audio amplifier configuration for a personal computer system optimizes performance in both the single-ended mode and the bridged mode. In a single-ended mode, as when the computer system user receives audio through headphones plugged into an external jack, a jack sense line is activated that switches into operation a power supply that is optimized for single-ended audio operation. In the bridged mode, as when the computer user receives audio from the system's internal speaker, operation is such that the audio amplifier is supplied by a power source optimized for operation in a bridged mode. In general, single-ended operation dictates that the audio amplifier power supply exhibit substantial noise immunity characteristics; whereas bridged-mode operation requires that the power supply be capable of supplying more demanding peak voltage and current excursions.

Abstract: Techniques for configuring multiple audio transducers, including telephony devices, are provided. Audio configurations for the multiple audio input and output transducers can be selected by the user. When it is determined that a telephony device has gone off hook, the audio configuration is changed to utilize the off hook telephony device. When the telephony device goes on hook, the audio configuration can be returned to its original state. The present invention allows multiple audio input and output transducers to be used, for example, in a computer telephony client by efficiently switching between these transducers via configuration changes. According to specific embodiments, the present invention may be provided in an audio transducer switch between the multiple audio transducers and a sound card of a computer, or within a sound card itself.

Abstract: Better reproduction of sound is achieved analyzing audio signals for perceptual soundfield imaging cues, and applying appropriate portions of the audio signal to a directional speaker and to a diffusing speaker, based on the analyzed audio signals. Specifically, the audio signal is applied to a critical band filter bank, and at the higher frequencies a detector detects leading edges in the signal's envelope. Concurrently, the audio signal is applied to a delay element followed by a reconstruction filter bank. The output of each filter in the reconstruction filter bank is applied to a one-input/two-outputs soft switch (single pole, double throw) that is controlled by one or more of the detectors. One output of the switch is applied to a directional speaker, and the other output of the switch is applied to a diffusing speaker.
