  • Patent number: 7031487
Abstract: An acoustical transducer such as an audio loudspeaker or a microphone, having a suspension component whose outermost edge extends axially rather than radially and couples with an axial mounting surface in the transducer's frame rather than with a radial flat surface of the frame. The suspension component may be a surround or a spider. Eliminating the radial portions of the suspension component and the frame enables the use of a larger diaphragm within a transducer of unchanged outer dimensions, increasing the amount of air moved by or moving the diaphragm. It also enables closer on-center packing of multiple transducers onto the same baffle such as the front baffle of a speaker enclosure, or, put another way, it enables a higher percentage of the mounting baffle's front surface area to be covered with moving diaphragm area. Radial mounting flanges and their mounting holes are limited to portions of the frame which will not increase the gap space between adjacent transducers or other boundaries.

  • Patent number: 6567529
Abstract: A low frequency loudspeaker driver has polygonal diaphragm surfaces. In a first embodiment, the peripheral edge of a loudspeaker driver diaphragm is polygonal, preferably hexagonal or six sided, wherein each of the six peripheral sides are of equal length and meet in radiused or rounded corners. The hexagonal loudspeaker driver is supported within a matching hexagonal section truncated pyramid shaped basket having a hexagonal peripheral mounting flange. The hexagonal woofer of a first embodiment is adapted to be mounted on a planar baffle in a variety of densely packed arrays such that virtually no wasted baffle space is visible between the driver basket peripheral edges. The faceted hexagonal diaphragm shape provides an increase in cone surface area of approximately ten percent as compared to conventional frustoconical woofers having circular peripheral edges.

  • Patent number: 6094497
Abstract: The loudspeaker system having back pressure equalization apparatus functions to minimize the mismatch between the forward sound wave and the reverse sound wave that is generated by the loudspeaker by rotating the apertures that are formed in the basket to be in alignment with the corners of the enclosure. This rotation causes sound wave reflections within the loudspeaker enclosure at angles at other than 90 degrees to thereby redirect the acoustic reflections within the enclosure away from the back side of the loudspeaker cone. These reflections are also more likely to be absorbed by the sound absorbing material that is mounted on the inside of the enclosure rather than causing perturbations in the cone. In addition, the back edge of the baffle is releaved using a bevel, radius or other contour or apertures formed in the baffle to prevent the blocking of the basket apertures by the baffle.
