Learning Systems Patents (Class 382/155)
  • Patent number: 7809185
Abstract: A method and system for generating a detector to detect a dominant color of an image is provided. A dominant color system trains a detector to classify colors as being dominant colors of images. The dominant color system trains the detector using a collection of training images. To train the detector, the dominant color system first identifies candidate dominant colors of the training images. The dominant color system then extracts features of the candidate dominant colors. The dominant color system also inputs an indication of dominance of each of the candidate dominant colors. The dominant color system then trains a detector to detect the dominant color of images using the extracted features and indications of dominance of the candidate dominant colors as training data.

  • Patent number: 7796821
Abstract: An approach to clustering a set of images based on similarity measures employs a fuzzy clustering paradigm in which each image is represented by a node in a graph. The graph is ultimately partitioned into subgraphs, each of which represent true clusters among which the various images are distributed. The partitioning is performed in a series of stages by identifying one true cluster at each stage, and removing the nodes belonging to each identified true cluster from further consideration so that the remaining, unclustered nodes may then be grouped. At the beginning of each such stage, the nodes that remain to be clustered are treated as all belonging to a single candidate cluster. Nodes are removed from this single candidate cluster in accordance with similarity and connectivity criteria, to arrive at a true cluster. The member nodes of this true cluster are then removed from further consideration, prior to the next stage in the process.

  • Patent number: 7729531
Abstract: Many problems in the fields of image processing and computer vision relate to creating good representations of information in images of objects in scenes. We provide a system for learning repeated-structure elements from one or more input images. The repeated-structure elements are patches that may be single pixels or coherent groups of pixels of varying shape, size and appearance (where those shapes and sizes are not pre-specified). Input images are mapped to a single output image using offset maps to specify the mapping. A joint probability distribution on the offset maps, output image and input images is specified and an unsupervised learning process is used to learn the offset maps and output image. The learnt output image comprises repeated-structure elements. This shape and appearance information captured in the learnt repeated-structure elements may be used for object recognition and many other tasks.

  • Patent number: 7702596
Abstract: A probabilistic boosting tree framework for computing two-class and multi-class discriminative models is disclosed. In the learning stage, the probabilistic boosting tree (PBT) automatically constructs a tree in which each node combines a number of weak classifiers (e.g., evidence, knowledge) into a strong classifier or conditional posterior probability. The PBT approaches the target posterior distribution by data augmentation (e.g., tree expansion) through a divide-and-conquer strategy. In the testing stage, the conditional probability is computed at each tree node based on the learned classifier which guides the probability propagation in its sub-trees. The top node of the tree therefore outputs the overall posterior probability by integrating the probabilities gathered from its sub-trees. In the training stage, a tree is recursively constructed in which each tree node is a strong classifier. The input training set is divided into two new sets, left and right ones, according to the learned classifier.

Abstract: A simplified general model and an associated estimation algorithm is provided for modeling visual data such as a video sequence. Specifically, images or frames in a video sequence are represented as collections of flat moving objects that change their appearance and shape over time, and can occlude each other over time. A statistical generative model is defined for generating such visual data where parameters such as appearance bit maps and noise, shape bit-maps and variability in shape, etc., are known. Further, when unknown, these parameters are estimated from visual data without prior pre-processing by using a maximization algorithm. By parameter estimation and inference in the model, visual data is segmented into components which facilitates sophisticated applications in video or image editing, such as, for example, object removal or insertion, tracking and visual surveillance, video browsing, photo organization, video compositing, etc.

  • Patent number: 7606420
Abstract: One embodiment of the present invention provides a system that efficiently performs a belief-propagation (BP) operation. During this process, for each node i in a BP graph, the system iteratively performs the following operations. First, the system receives incoming messages mji at node i for all adjacent nodes j. Next, the system calculates the full product Pi of all incoming messages mji. The system then produces an outgoing message mij from node i to node j by, computing a partial product Pij of all incoming messages to node i except for the message from node j by dividing the Pi by the incoming message from node j. The system then combines Pij with a data function for node i and a smoothness function between node i and node j to produce outgoing message mij. Finally the system communicates outgoing message mij to node j.

Abstract: A plurality of landmarks, which are employed in statistical models, such as an ASM, that is, a plurality of landmarks that represent the shape and the like of a predetermined subject, such as a face, within an image, are detected. Discrimination regarding whether each pixel within the image is a point that represents a landmark is performed based on discrimination conditions. The discrimination conditions correspond to characteristic amounts, which are obtained by learning characteristic amounts of positions, which are known to be landmarks, and characteristic amounts of positions, which are known to not be landmarks, within a plurality of sample images of the subject, by a machine learning technique.

Abstract: An object tracking apparatus consisting of an imaging device, a signal processor for processing a video signal generated by the imaging device, and a display for displaying the result of processing performed by the signal processor. An intruding object is detected within a field under monitoring based on a video signal captured by the imaging device, and the imaging device is controlled in response to motions of the intruding object to track the object. The position of a visual field range of the imaging device is calculated, and panning and tilting of the imaging device and an imaging lens are controlled such that the calculated position of the visual field range of the imaging device does not include an imaging prohibited region positioned within the field under monitoring.

Thereafter, by use of, for example, an improved method incorporating concept of vicinity learning intp learning vector quantization, a second learning section modifies the temporary self-organizing map and obtains a final self-organizing map. By use of the final self-organizing map thus derived, image meaning determining processing is performed.

Abstract: Methods and apparatus are provided for evoking perceptions of affordances in a user/virtual environment interface. The method involves recognizing the absence or inadequacy of certain sensory stimuli in the user/virtual environment interface, and then creating sensory stimuli in the virtual environment to substitute for the recognized absent or inadequate sensory stimuli. The substitute sensory stimuli are typically communicated to the user (e.g., visually and/or audibly) as properties and behavior of objects in the virtual environment. Appropriately designed substitute sensory stimuli can evoke perceptions of affordances for the recognized absent or inadequate sensory stimuli in the user/virtual environment interface.

  • Patent number: 7552243
Abstract: The present invention discloses methods and systems for discovering printers and shares on a computer network. Each domain on the network is identified, and each computer in the domain is identified. In addition, each printer connected to the computer and each share on the computer is identified. Shortcuts to the identified printers and shares are created on at least one computer on the network. Moreover, drivers are preferably installed on the computer for each printer for which a shortcut was created. In the event that the total number of resources (i.e., shares and/or printers) exceeds a threshold, then the process terminates. Otherwise, the present invention continues until all printers and shares on the network are identified, and the appropriate shortcuts are created. Thus, the present invention provides methods and systems for discovering resources on a network.

Abstract: An interactive concept learning image search technique that allows end-users to quickly create their own rules for re-ranking images based on the image characteristics of the images. The image characteristics can include visual characteristics as well as semantic features or characteristics, or may include a combination of both. End-users can then rank or re-rank any current or future image search results according to their rule or rules. End-users provide examples of images each rule should match and examples of images the rule should reject. The technique learns the common image characteristics of the examples, and any current or future image search results can then be ranked or re-ranked according to the learned rules.
