  • Patent number: 9870520
Abstract: The disclosed embodiments relate to a system and method for calibrating optical character recognition (OCR) processes for an image captured through a mobile computing device. During operation, the system adjusts the OCR process through pre-recognition functions, OCR functions and/or post-recognition functions with multiple sets of parameter settings. With each of these sets, the system scores the OCR process output against an image with known text. Once the sets are scored, the system sorts the sets of parameters, removes some sets, then mixes and mutates the remaining sets in a process akin to evolutionary biology. By repeating this procedure, the system produces a set of parameter settings that can be used to calibrate OCR processing.

  • Patent number: 9613450
Abstract: Dynamic texture mapping is used to create a photorealistic three dimensional animation of an individual with facial features synchronized with desired speech. Audiovisual data of an individual reading a known script is obtained and stored in an audio library and an image library. The audiovisual data is processed to extract feature vectors used to train a statistical model. An input audio feature vector corresponding to desired speech with which the animation will be synchronized is provided. The statistical model is used to generate a trajectory of visual feature vectors that corresponds to the input audio feature vector. These visual feature vectors are used to identify a matching image sequence from the image library. The resulting sequence of images, concatenated from the image library, provides a photorealistic image sequence with facial features, such as lip movements, synchronized with the desired speech. This image sequence is applied to the three-dimensional model.

Abstract: Image editing techniques are disclosed that support a number of physically-based image editing tasks, including object insertion and relighting. The techniques can be implemented, for example in an image editing application that is executable on a computing system. In one such embodiment, the editing application is configured to compute a scene from a single image, by automatically estimating dense depth and diffuse reflectance, which respectively form the geometry and surface materials of the scene. Sources of illumination are then inferred, conditioned on the estimated scene geometry and surface materials and without any user input, to form a complete 3D physical scene model corresponding to the image. The scene model may include estimates of the geometry, illumination, and material properties represented in the scene, and various camera parameters. Using this scene model, objects can be readily inserted and composited into the input image with realistic lighting, shadowing, and perspective.

  • Patent number: 9367763
Abstract: A method for text-to-image matching includes generating representations of text images, such as license plate images, by embedding each text image into a first vectorial space with a first embedding function. With a second embedding function, a character string, such as a license plate number to be matched, is embedded into a second vectorial space to generate a character string representation. A compatibility is computed between the character string representation and one or more of the text image representations to identify a matching one. The compatibility is computed with a function that uses a transformation which is learned on a training set of labeled images. The learning uses a loss function that aggregates a text-to-image-loss and an image-to-text loss over the training set. The image-to-text loss penalizes the transformation when it correctly ranks a pair of character string representations, given an image representation corresponding to one of them.

  • Patent number: 9100512
Abstract: A reading apparatus includes a first generation unit, a determination unit, a second generation unit, and an association unit. The first generation unit generates data of a first target object obtained by using an image capture unit attached above a reading platen to read the first target object placed in a reading area of the reading platen. The determination unit determines, in a state where the first target object is placed in the reading area, whether a second target object has been placed in the reading area. The second generation unit generates data of a second target object obtained by using the image capture unit to read the second target object. The association unit associates, in response to determining that the second target object has been placed in the reading area, the data of the first target object with the data of the second target object.

  • Patent number: 9082199
Abstract: A video processing device has an input for receiving video data, at least one processing circuit, for generating processed video data from the received video data, and a memory, for receiving the processed video data. An output circuit reads the processed video data from the memory, and generates frames of data including at least the processed video data. In order to be able to operate with an output clock frequency that may differ from the ideal output clock frequency, it is possible to vary the frame size, that is, the number of pixels of data in a frame. If an amount of processed video data stored in the memory exceeds an upper threshold, then the frame size can be reduced by reducing the number of pixels of blanking data in the output frame, thereby increasing the rate at which data is read from the memory.

  • Patent number: 9041689
Abstract: A computing device and/or application executing on the device can utilize fingertip tracking using a camera. However, when the fingertip is in a dead zone (an area that is not viewable by the camera), the fingertip tracking cannot function properly. Nevertheless, the position of the fingertip, when in the dead zone, can still be estimated. An image of a user's hand can be captured by at least one camera. A portion of a pointing finger can be detected in the captured image. An orientation of the portion of the pointing finger can be determined. One or more joint lines of the pointing finger can be identified. Based on data about a slant and/or a bend of the pointing finger obtained using information relating to the identified joint line(s), and/or on data obtained via calibration and/or historic/current usage, the position of the fingertip, when in the dead zone, can be approximated.

Abstract: A measuring device to aid mattress selection has an upstanding frame with a plurality of vertically space-apart horizontal illuminated strips. A camera mounted in front of the frame takes front view and side view images of a person standing in front of the illuminated strips. These images are delivered to an associated computer having means to determine the body mass distribution and the spine curvature of the person based on the images of the strips taken by the camera and in particular based on those portions of the image of the illuminated strips blocked by the person standing in front of the illuminated strips. This information can then be used to aid in appropriate mattress selection for the person.

  • Publication number: 20150125083
Abstract: Techniques for object detection are provided that employ limited learned attribute ranges. One or more objects are initially detected for a full range of one or more attributes at each location of an image. Thereafter, a set of positional constraints are generated indicating an expected range of values for each position in the image for one or more of the attributes based on the detected objects employing a geometric model of a scene in the image. Objects are then detected in the image using the expected range of values for each position in the image for the one or more the attributes. The attributes comprise, for example, one or more of size, pose and rotation of the objects. A best fit is computed to the geometric model to generate the set of positional constraints, for example, using a least squares approach.
