The improved seal includes a non-rotating seal case working in closely spaced cooperation with a rotor to form a channel. The rotor is attached and turns with the shaft, inducing flow in the channel. Lubricant leakage is impeded by the tortuous fluid path formed by the convoluted channel of the labyrinth-like seal and the fluid shear forces developed by the turning shaft. • Patent number: 5271676
Abstract: The bearing pedestal for the rotating shaft 12 includes journal and axial thrust bearings 16 and 26, respectively. Both of the journal and thrust bearings have passages 70 and 80, respectively, and recesses 74 and 82 in the respective pad faces for flowing high pressure lubricant between the pads and the shaft to displace the shaft and pads relative to one another to minimize the required breakaway torque and metal-to-metal contact. Each thrust bearing includes a plurality of circumferentially spaced pads 26 and lubricant directors 30 between the pads. The lubricant director includes a rib 34 extending generally tangentially and radially outwardly to channel lubricant from a preceding pad to a succeeding pad in the direction of shaft rotation and to channel the lubricant for flow tangentially from the thrust bearing into an annular cavity 39 for return to sump 42.

  • Patent number: 5238166
Abstract: A sealing assembly for regulating the flow of lubricant to a rotating shaft and to the bearings which support it. The shaft is supported on rolling-contact bearings to which are coupled bearing collars. The bearing collars serve as spray-off edges for removing lubricant from the bearings, which after removal, is received in a groove formed between the bearing and a seal member. This groove is in liquid communication with an opening to the surface of the shaft which, as it rotates, centrifuges lubricant from the groove. The shaft is encircled by the seal member which includes several chambers for receiving lubricant sprayed off the shaft at several spray-off edges. At the end of the seal member furthest from the rolling-contact bearings an outlet for the lubricant of the same size as the inlet is provided, thereby reducing pressure differences between the inlet and the outlet.

Abstract: A unitary structure comprising a mechanical seal for rotating shafts consisting of a single ring member. The ring member has at one end a series of radial grooves in the internal bore and a trough extending across the grooves to an end of the ring. The ring also has at a second end at least one external labyrinth groove extending radially and serving to inhibit contamination. A sloped collection chamber having an expulsion port lies between the inner radial grooves and the external labyrinth groove. A non-metallic, flexible rotor is fitted within the sloped collection chamber whereby free flow across the axial width of the collection chamber is arrested and fluids are directed outwardly towards said expulsion port.

  • Patent number: 4465385
Abstract: A flexible spring bearing comprising a substantially cylindrical configuration with an arcuate portion being disposed circumferentially about the cylindrical configuration. The arcuate portions may be convexly curved outward or concavely curved inward. Although many combinations are possible, the preferred embodiment is a concave portion at one end and a convex portion at the other end. A thrust cap is incorporated to be inserted over the convex portion thereby evenly distributing the applied pressure throughout the flexible spring bearing and also regulating the flexibility of the convex portion. Furthermore, a main bearing race and thrust race are incorporated to be contiguous to the end of the concave portion. The main bearing race along with the cylindrical configuration rotates, via a bearing means, upon the thrust race. The bearing means may be an annular protrusion disposed concentric with the cylindrical configuration.
