  • Patent number: 6280090
Abstract: Properties of mechanical bearings and mechanical seals can be significantly improved by covering the load-bearing surfaces with fields of high aspect ratio microstructures (HARMs), such as microchannels or microposts. The HARMs can substantially enhance heat transfer capability and lubricant flow. The present invention uses microstructures and micro-channels manufactured by a modified LIGA process to enhance the performance of load bearing surfaces. Benefits include reduced operating temperatures, precise metering of lubricant flow to all affected surfaces, increased reliability, increased life, higher maximum rotational speed, and the ability of the seal or bearing to run “dry,” that is, without periodic re-application of lubricant.

  • Patent number: 6206572
Abstract: It is an object of the invention to provide a bearing device in which the bearing performance is not lowered even when the temperature is changed. In order to attain the object, the bearing device has a shaft and a sleeve. The shaft is made of stainless alloyed steel and has dynamic pressure generating grooves of a herringbone-like shape. The sleeve consists of the body made of a copper alloy, and an electroless nickel plated layer which covers the whole surface of the body. The electroless nickel plated layer has a coefficient of thermal expansion which is smaller than that of the body made of a copper alloy. The coefficient of thermal expansion of the shaft made of stainless alloyed steel is smaller than that of the body of the sleeve made of a copper alloy. When the temperature is raised, the electroless nickel plated layer suppresses the amount of thermal expansion of the body.

  • Patent number: 6099166
Abstract: A rider having a centralizing or radially stabilizing bushing that reduces vibration and a longitudinal stabilizer element or lip to prevent longitudinal translation of the stabilizing bushing. The centralizing bushing maintains contact, alignment, and general stability between the bushing and the shaft and reduces noise and fluctuations between the bushing and the shaft when they are moving relative to each other. The bushing is mounted in the rider and includes a bearing engagable with the shaft and a cap engagable with the longitudinal stabilizing unit. There are high friction, elastomeric means engagable with the bearing for limiting movement of the bearing away from the shaft and the rider is under unbalanced radial load conditions. The coefficient of thermal expansion of the bearing is essentially the same as the coefficient of thermal expansion of the shaft.

  • Patent number: 6065877
Abstract: A bimetallic part is formed from metals or comprises metals with different thermal expansion coefficients. A first element defines the part and defines one surface of the bearing gap and has a first coefficient of expansion and a second element is wholly or partially inserted into and constrained within the first element and having a different coefficient of thermal expansion so that as the temperature changes, the stress created by the differential expansion of the two elements will cause the overall part to deform elastically as a function of temperature. This deformation will cause the gap, the elements being properly selected, to narrow as temperature rises (and viscosity falls) and to widen as temperature falls (and viscosity rises).

  • Patent number: 5938344
Abstract: Temperature compensating bearings with bearing beams resiliently mounted to an outer shell to optimize load capacity for varying operating conditions, for example, bearings for precisely supporting a shaft for axial and rotational motion under various temperature, load, wear, and tolerance conditions. The bearing is capable of maintaining a contact fit despite wear, and is self-aligning, simple to manufacture, and operates quietly. The bearing is made up of an outer shell, a plurality of circumferentially spaced arcuate beams each connected to the outer shell by two radially extending support members located at either end of the beams, and a plurality of lubricant channels. The center of each beam is designed and configured to provide for an interference fit with the shaft, while the ends of each beam maintain a slight clearance with the shaft. As the outer shell contracts or expands due to temperature changes, the radial support members move towards or away from the shaft, respectively.

  • Patent number: 5803611
Abstract: A marine bearing assembly for a propeller shaft suitable for a vessel which travels in intensely cold seawater where a conventional bearing, as a result of its contraction, would seize the shaft and prevent it from rotating. The assembly includes a cylindrical body having an axial bore therein to receive the rotating shaft, the body being formed of UHMW polyethylene having a low coefficient of friction and a high coefficient of thermal contraction. To complete the assembly, the body is exposed to a temperature below the freezing point of water to cause it to contract. The contracted body is then press-fitted into a sleeve whose internal diameter matches the contracted diameter of the body, whereby at higher temperatures the body seeks to expand, but being confined within the sleeve it is held under compression.

  • Patent number: 5795075
Abstract: A spring cartridge rotor bearing is inserted into an electric motor during assembly as a preassembled unit. The rotor bearing includes a sleeve having a bore adapted to receive therethrough a shaft of the electric motor, and each end of the sleeve adapted to contact adjacent motor rotor sections. A bearing has a bore extending therethrough with the sleeve received therein. The bearing thermally locks into the stator bore early in motor warm-up and the bearing has sufficient end play on the sleeve to accommodate shaft expansion. One or more springs are located on the sleeve to bias the bearing to a neutral or generally centered position on the sleeve. The springs permit the bearing to move along the sleeve during times of thermal expansion and contraction, and prevent the bearing from becoming locked into an extreme position. This prevents the transmission of thrust loads from the rotor to the bearing.

  • Patent number: 5775816
Abstract: A device is proposed for centering a bearing bushing on a shaft wherein the bushing is made of a material, such as a ceramic, that is sensitive to tensile stress. At lower operating temperatures the bushing exhibits a degree of play relative to the shaft, but is play-free relative thereto at high operational temperatures. Correct centering of the bushing is ensured even in the higher temperature range by the provision of a pair of centering rings which are connected to the shaft without play and act on the bushing to center it. The centering rings are made of a material which, in comparison to the bushing, is not sensitive to tensile stress. It is expedient to provide the two centering rings at the end faces of the bushing. The clamping action of the centering rings on the bushing assures rotational pull of the bushing at low operating temperatures.

  • Patent number: 5730097
Abstract: A bearing supporting a crankshaft provided in a connecting rod comprises an overlay in contact with a throw, a metal layer on the outside of the overlay and a back metal on the outside of the metal layer. The hardness of the metal layer is lower than that of the back metal, and the thermal conductivity of the overlay is higher than that of the throw. The metal layer having a lower hardness than the back metal improves the fit of the bearing with the throw, and sharp increase of frictional losses and rise of lubricating oil temperature at high engine rotation speeds are thereby prevented. The overlay having a high thermal conductivity absorbs heat from the minimum thickness oil film formed between the inner surface region of the throw and the bearing, and after the bearing has passed through the minimum thickness oil film, the absorbed heat is again discharged to the lubricating oil.

  • Patent number: 5664889
Abstract: A fluid dynamic bearing is described having an inner element made of a first material with a first coefficient of thermal expansion, an outer element made of a second material with a second coefficient, and a layer of viscous fluid in contact with and separating the inner element from the outer element such that said outer element is capable of rotation around said inner element. By choosing particular materials, the difference between the first and second coefficients of thermal expansion can be controlled, and the thickness of the layer of viscous fluid can be made to vary with temperature. This allows for some degree of control over the temperature dependence of the stiffness and drag of the fluid dynamic bearing. In particular, the coefficients of thermal expansion can be chosen so as to cancel out any temperature dependence of stiffness and/or drag due to a temperature dependence of the viscosity of the viscous fluid.
