Patent number: 5599112Abstract: The axial bearing includes a first ring and a second ring. During operation of the axial bearing, the first ring rotates with respect to the second ring. Over time the foregoing rotation produces wear of the first ring; consequently, exposes layers of the first ring to the second ring. The different layers of the first ring produce variations in the coefficient of friction within the axial bearing. If the axial bearing is associated with a drive motor, then the variations in the coefficient of friction change the load on the drive motor. The change in load upon the drive motor may be monitored to indicate axial bearing wear or the need for axial bearing replacement.Type: GrantFiled: August 17, 1995Date of Patent: February 4, 1997Assignee: Ansimag Inc.Inventor: Manfred P. Klein

Patent number: 5433531Abstract: A dispersion of hard, wear-resistant particles such as aluminum oxide is embedded within a shaft-engaging surface of a bearing such that the service life of a shaft and bearing assembly is extended. The relatively hard aluminum oxide particles exert a polishing action on the shaft surface to improve the wear resistance and seizure resistance of the bearing and shaft system. A tumbling barrel, vibratory bowl, air jet, brush or similar apparatus can be used to apply and embed tumbling media particles within the shaft-engaging surface. During the application period, aluminum oxide particles are transferred to the bearing member surfaces by the sliding, rubbing contact between the abrasive bodies and the individual bearing members.Type: GrantFiled: September 21, 1993Date of Patent: July 18, 1995Assignee: Federal-Mogul CorporationInventor: Ronald J. Patent number: 5267798Abstract: Strips of polytetrafluoroethylene (i.e., Teflon) are interposed, equally spaced apart, between the journal and sleeve, and journal and collar of a bearing assembly to provide lubrication thereat. The Teflon strips are fibrous and porous, and compressibly collapsible therefor, to insure that thermal expansion of any one thereof will not unduly load the bearing assembly. The bearing material has surface voids in which to trap and retain the Teflon which is wiped onto the contact surfaces.Type: GrantFiled: October 16, 1992Date of Patent: December 7, 1993Assignee: ITT CorporationInventor: Allan R. Patent number: 4789251Abstract: Polycrystalline diamond wear surfaces in bearing structures are maintained at temperatures that prevent thermal degradation in spite of exceptionally high loads. This temperature control is accomplished by segmenting the diamond wear surface to provide interrupt channels through which the energy build-up at the diamond wear surface is maintained below the thermal degradation level. Cooling fluid may be caused to flow through the interrupt channels, the higher the velocity of fluid flow around the diamond bearing surface, the greater the cooling effect.Type: GrantFiled: February 22, 1988Date of Patent: December 6, 1988Assignee: Smith International, Inc.Inventors: James N. Patent number: 4759644Abstract: The invention relates to a journal gas bearing body which is formed with a cylindrical bore to rotatably support therein the journal part of a shaft and gas introducing holes radially opening into the cylindrical bore. The bearing body is made of a metal, and only in opposite endmost sections of the cylindrical bore the cylindrical inner surface defining the bore is provided by a very hard and wear resistant material, which is either a ceramic or a cemented carbide. It is convenient to provide the hard inner surface in each of said endmost sections by insertion of a hollow cylindrical bushing formed of a ceramic or a cemented carbide. The gas introducing holes are all located lengthwise inward of said endmost sections to avoid boring through the ceramic or cemented carbide layer. Accordingly the bearing body can easily be manufactured without significant increase in the working cost.Type: GrantFiled: September 23, 1987Date of Patent: July 26, 1988Assignee: NGK Spark Plug Co., Ltd.Inventors: Hisayosi Mizukusa, Sigenori Murate

Patent number: 4474861Abstract: A bearing structure having a substrate and a bearing surface of alternating, spaced, hard metal and soft metal areas is disclosed. The hard metal is metallurgically bonded to the base metal substrate by rapidly melting in a predetermined pattern a powdered hardfacing composition disposed on a bearing precursor surface of the base metal substrate. The melting is accomplished by scanning with a laser beam, or like high intensity, concentrated energy source. The melt is allowed to solidify rapidly.
