Patent number: 11920599Abstract: An electric submersible pump includes a plurality of centrifugal pump stages, each stage including a rotating impeller and a stationary diffuser mounted on a shaft coupled to a motor. An upthrust washer can be disposed axially between an impeller and its associated diffuser at or near a tip of the impeller, and the gap between the impeller tip and diffuser can define the end play or axial clearance for the pump. If the upthrust washer wears away, upthrust rubbing occurs at the impeller tip instead of proximate the pump shaft to advantageously help protect the shaft from damage or failure related to heat. In some ESPs, an upthrust bearing assembly can be located at the pump head. A downthrust washer can be disposed in an upstream facing groove of the impeller. The downthrust washer can have a thickness greater than 0.10 in.Type: GrantFiled: September 18, 2020Date of Patent: March 5, 2024Assignee: SCHLUMBERGER TECHNOLOGY CORPORATIONInventors: Raju Ekambaram, Teng Fei Wang, Pradeep Mahadevan, Kean Wee Cheah, David Milton Eslinger

Patent number: 6045266Abstract: A supercharger thrust bearing for use in a machine rotatable at a high speed includes radial oil grooves formed in a pad surface. Gradients are formed at the outward radial ends of the oil supply grooves such that the groove depth sequentially diminishes as the outside in the radial direction is approached. The machine rotatable at a high speed is, for example, a boat or a ship. The lubricating oil inside the oil supply grooves is forced out by the gradients and creates a dam. The lubrication oil flowing in a circumferential direction on the pad surface, which is heated on the pad surface, is stopped by this dam and turned to a radially outward direction. The heated oil is pushed out from the pad surface and the new cold oil is caused to flow onto the pad surface from the radial grooves.Type: GrantFiled: June 17, 1998Date of Patent: April 4, 2000Assignee: Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries Co., Ltd.Inventors: Ken Mitsubori, Yukiteru Sekita

Patent number: 6024495Abstract: The object of the invention is to provide a simple and cost-effective solution for reducing the wear and consequently for increasing the life of axial sliding bearings. For this purpose, the profiled annular surface (24, 24') of the lubricating gap (25, 25') arranged between the fixed bearing body (20) and the rotating bearing collar (19) is designed to rotate about or with the shaft (14). Said annular surface has a plurality of radially arranged lubricating oil grooves (26, 26') and, in each case, a wedge surface (27, 27') connected to these in the circumferential direction. A catch surface (28, 28') is designed between each wedge surface (27, 27') and the lubricating oil groove (26, 26') adjacent to the latter. The lubricating oil grooves (26, 26') and the wedge surfaces (27, 27') are delimited radially outward by a sealing web (29, 29').Type: GrantFiled: September 18, 1997Date of Patent: February 15, 2000Assignee: Asea Brown Boveri AGInventors: Markus Loos, Jean-Yves Werro, Raimund Wohlrab
