Patent number: 4942930Abstract: A lubrication system for an earth boring drill bit having a pressure compensator for minimizing the pressure differential between the drill bit lubricant and the well bore fluid is improved in a manner to prevent sharp edges in the lubricant reservoir wall from damaging the flexible diaphragm and for enabling the lubricant space available in the lubricant reservoir to be maximized. In accordance with a preferred embodiment, the pressure compensator is positioned on a shoulder ring in the lubricant reservoir and the shoulder ring retains the open end of a pressure diaphragm within an interior recess of a compensator cap, the diaphragm sealing against a perimetric wall of the recess. Methods of filling the lubrication system with the pressure compensator installed or removed are provided which avoid stretching or damage to the diaphragm while still maximally filling of the lubrication system with lubricant.Type: GrantFiled: February 28, 1989Date of Patent: July 24, 1990Assignee: Cummins Engine Company, Inc.Inventor: Stuart C. Millsapps, Jr.

Patent number: 4887675Abstract: An earth boring (rock) bit having a flexible diaphragm located inside the bearing shaft in a cavity between a threaded lug and a mating bearing sleeve. The diaphragm has an enlarged periphery, shaped somewhat like an o-ring, that is confined and sealed between opposed annular surfaces on the lug and the sleeve. The circular periphery of the diaphragm and cavity provide good compensation volume, from which excessive lubricant pressure is relieved by an enlarged portion which is punctured and contoured to discharge lubricant under excessive pressure while excluding drilling fluid. Simplicity and reliability are achieved by the elimination of multiple and complex manufacture and assembly operations.Type: GrantFiled: August 8, 1988Date of Patent: December 19, 1989Assignee: Hughes Tool CompanyInventor: Duane E. Patent number: 4749053Abstract: A roller cutter drill bit adapted to drill bores in the earth comprising a bit body of steel having a plurality of bearing journals at its lower end, and a plurality of roller cutters, each having a recess therein receiving one of the journals. A radial bearing asembly for each roller cutter rotatably mounts the roller cutter on the journal, and an axial or thrust bearing assembly at the free end of each journal carries axial forces applied to the roller cutter during drilling, with the thrust bearing assembly thus being subject to rotary frictional forces and heating upon rotation of the drill bit during drilling. According to this invention, a heat dissipation member formed of material having higher thermal conductivity than steel is incorporated into the bit body. This material extends from the free end toward the attached end of the journal for conducting heat away from the thrust bearing assembly, thereby reducing bearing temperatures and providing longer bearing life.Type: GrantFiled: February 24, 1986Date of Patent: June 7, 1988Assignee: Baker International CorporationInventor: Frank A. Hollingshead

Patent number: 4657091Abstract: There is disclosed a drill bit which is connectable to the lower end of a rotary drill string for use in drilling oil and gas wells as drilling mud is circulated downward through the string, out the bit, and upwardly within the annulus between the string and well bore so as to remove cuttings therefrom. The bit has cones which are mounted for rotation about thrust bearings which extend inwardly from the lower ends of legs which depend from a shank at the upper end of the bit body which is attached to the drill string.Type: GrantFiled: May 6, 1985Date of Patent: April 14, 1987Inventor: Robert Higdon

Patent number: 4620803Abstract: A friction bearing is disclosed, intended for very heavy duty use, for example, as in rotary cone rock bits.In a pair of structural members having cooperating load bearing surfaces, one such cooperating surface is interrupted by a fine grid of small grooves formed therein to retain lubricant and to produce, over the total bearing surface, the turbulent hydraulic environment normally found only along the line of formation of a hydro-dynamic lubricant film. An extension of the useful life expectancy of the bearing is claimed by thus postponing degradation of the bearing surfaces by metal transfer therebetween due to failure of the hydro-dynamic lubricant film.Type: GrantFiled: July 26, 1985Date of Patent: November 4, 1986Inventor: Edward Vezirian

Patent number: 4613002Abstract: A downhole drilling tool having a tubular stem connected to the drill string, and a tubular housing mounted concentrically and rotatably on the stem, forming an annular space between the housing and the stem. A plurality of bearings within the annular space support the housing against radial and longitudinal thrust loads. A plurality of seals within the annular space above and below the bearings form a lubricant chamber. The housing has a cylindrical lubricant passage extending between the lubricant chamber and the annular space outside of the lubricant chamber. A cylindrical piston is sealably slidable within the lubricant passage and responds to pressure of the drilling fluid entering the passage from the exterior of the housing to force lubricant out of the passage and into the lubricant chamber in order to replace lubricant which is lost therefrom. A downhole drilling motor is attached to the lower end of the housing.Type: GrantFiled: April 30, 1984Date of Patent: September 23, 1986Assignee: Hughes Tool CompanyInventors: Paul R. Patent number: 4597455Abstract: A sealed, pressure-equalizing lubrication system for a rotary rock bit is shown. The system includes a lubricant-filled container having an outlet and a portion of the container includes a flexible diaphragm. The container is mounted in a chamber in the journal axle portion of the bit, immediately adjacent and open to the sealed bearing cavity of the bit cutter, with the outlet disposed adjacent the cavity. A bleed hole is provided from the back face of the bit to the chamber adjacent the diaphragm causing the diaphragm to be responsive to the pressure of the external downhole fluid. The adjacency of the reservoir to the sealed bearing cavity permits the pressure of the lubricant adjacent the seal to be immediately responsive to the pressure of the downhole fluid at the diaphragm to prevent pressure differentials between the lubricant and the fluid at the seal.Type: GrantFiled: April 3, 1985Date of Patent: July 1, 1986Assignee: Dresser Industries, Inc.Inventors: D. Patent number: 4509607Abstract: A compressible pressure compensating member is disposed within a sealed lubricant volume enclosing a bearing and seal system of an earth boring apparatus. Lubricant is maintained within the volume by metal face seals so that both the bearing and the seal structure are lubricated thereby. As the lubricant expands, due to thermal expansion under use, the increased pressure is accommodated by compression of the compressible member so that no lubricant is expelled through the seals. When the lubricant cools and contracts, the compensator expands to maintain the lubricant volume at the initially filled level.Type: GrantFiled: August 26, 1983Date of Patent: April 9, 1985Assignee: Dresser Industries, Inc.Inventors: William C. Patent number: 4491428Abstract: Disclosed herein is an earth boring bit of otherwise conventional construction except for the bearing and cutter retention. A snap ring is used to retain the cutter, the grooves that receive the ring and the ring construction being such that the ring is forced into the retainer groove when the cone is thrust inward.
