Patent number: 6578647Abstract: A sealing structure for a rock drill bit includes an elastomeric diaphragm for installation in the drill bit so as to separate grease from drilling mud. The diaphragm has an aperture extending through it, and a plug is disposed in the aperture so as to form a mechanical seal with a wall of the aperture. Patent number: 6497226Abstract: An improved modular, radially-compliant, redundantly-sealing journal-type bearing assembly comprising two bearing elements retained in a housing and positively loaded in opposing directions by a compression spring disposed therebetween. A shaft to be supported and sealed against leakage by the bearing, such as a valve pintle shaft, is disposed in an axial bore in each of the bearing elements, which bores are fitted as closely to the diameter of the shaft as is possible without causing the shaft to bind in the bores. Patent number: 6247545Abstract: The present invention is a self adjusting, volume balanced, single energizer rigid face seal for rolling cutter drill bits with floating journal bearings. Volume balancing is accomplished by utilizing a floating static seal between the rigid face seal ring and the bearing shaft. Patent number: 6176331Abstract: A bearing seal for earth boring bits is disclosed. A supporting ring is located in a groove formed in the earth boring bit. An annular cavity between the outer circumference of the supporting ring and the bottom of the groove is connected with the outside. An O-ring made of rubber is provided in an annular space defined by the sidewalls of the groove, the inner circumference of the supporting ring and the cylindrical surface of the bearing shaft of the head section to form a seal comprising a radial and axial seal. Compressive deformation of the O-ring does not depend on the eccentric rotation of the cone. Therefore, the working life of the seal is increased and the compressive deformation is decreased, thus facilitating use at high rotating speeds.Type: GrantFiled: November 30, 1998Date of Patent: January 23, 2001Assignee: Kingdream Public Ltd., Co.Inventors: Zhi Xun Jin, Xian Zhong Qiu, Feng Shou Xia, Ai Jun Li

Patent number: 6176330Abstract: The invention provides a mechanical face seal for rotary rock bits with a novel coil spring energization system that prevents yielding of the coil springs in extreme torque conditions. Within at least one of the coil springs is a cylindrical pin designed to co-act with the spring such that the combination becomes very stiff in the radial direction as the spring extends beyond a certain amount. This prevents the high torque from yielding the springs. When the spring returns to its normal extension, the pin does not interfere with the axial compression of the spring. This combination allows the coil spring energizers of a rotary rock bit mechanical face seal to survive the occasional extreme torque event.Type: GrantFiled: October 12, 1999Date of Patent: January 23, 2001Assignee: Camco International Inc.Inventor: Bruce Hawley Burr

Patent number: 6142249Abstract: An earth-boring bit has a bit body and at least one bearing shaft depending inwardly and downwardly from the bit body. The bearing shaft has a base where it joins the bit body. At least one cutter is mounted for rotation on the bearing shaft and has radial and axial surfaces that cooperate with the base of the bearing shaft to define a bearing seal gland. A bearing is defined between the cutter and bearing shaft. A seal element is disposed in the seal gland. A secondary seal is disposed in the seal gland opposite the cutter axial surface and cooperates with the seal element to at least partially seal the gland against entry of debris from the exterior of the bit.Type: GrantFiled: December 23, 1999Date of Patent: November 7, 2000Assignee: Baker Hughes IncorporatedInventors: Anton F. Patent number: 5992943Abstract: A wheel mount for a wheel comprises a spindle, a hub for surrounding the spindle and a bearing assembly interposed between the spindle and the hub. The spindle extends from an end of an axle of a vehicle and has a generally decreasing diameter from its proximal end to its distal end. The spindle is provided with a pair of lands near the ends of the spindle for receiving bearings, and has bearing retainers near the respective ends also, the distal retainer being removably attached. These inboard and outboard bearing retainers define an axial bearing space. The hub has a central aperture with an inboard land and an outboard land provided on an internal surface of the central aperture, also for receiving bearings. The bearing assembly comprises an inboard bearing and an outboard bearing in spaced apart relationship within the axial bearing space. The inboard bearing has an internal diameter larger than the internal diameter of the outboard bearing.Type: GrantFiled: July 17, 1997Date of Patent: November 30, 1999Assignee: Dana CorporationInventors: James H Sheets, Paul R. Patent number: 5875861Abstract: A rolling cutter drill bit has at least one roller cutter mounted on a cantilevered bearing shaft with a sealed bearing and lubrication system, lubricant pressure balancing means, lubricant pressure relief means, and a volume compensating rigid face seal assembly axially movable through an operating range. The face seal assembly comprises two cooperating face seal rings, one ring mounted on the bearing shaft and the other ring mounted in the cutter; a first energizer for the seal ring mounted on the bearing shaft, having a stiffness K1; and a second energizer for the seal ring mounted in the cutter, having a stiffness K2.
