Patent number: 7792408Abstract: Refractive index modifications such as e.g. Fiber Bragg gratings in micro-structured Fiber are according to an aspect of the invention fabricated by first filling and/or purging the holes of the micro-structured fiber with inert gas or by evacuation and, optionally subsequently scaling the ends. Alternatively, the ends of the micro-structured fiber may be sealed without a preceding purging or evacuation of the holes. In this way hydrogen or deuterium present in the holes after photosensitizing loading will not react with atmospheric oxygen to form water. Water formed this way would otherwise seriously impair the grating formation process. Bragg gratings and other refractive index structures can thus be fabricated with high quality and predictable specifications in micro-structured fiber. Sealing the fiber ends also prevents in-diffusion of moisture. The invention may e.g. find application in connection with fiber optical sensors, high-power fiber lasers, etc.Type: GrantFiled: August 24, 2005Date of Patent: September 7, 2010Assignee: NKT Photonics A/SInventor: Poul Varming

Patent number: 7738760Abstract: An optical polishing fixture for securing one or more optical connectors can include a fixture base having a connector slot for receiving an optical connector and a clamping assembly mounted to the fixture base proximate the connector slot. The connector slot can be defined by at least one side wall defining a side wall plane and the clamping assembly can include a clamp pad moveable relative to the fixture base between a clamping position and a loading position. The clamp pad may move relative to the fixture base at an angle of less than 45 degrees relative to one of (i) a top surface of the fixture base, (ii) a plane perpendicular the side wall plane, or (iii) a plane defined by a portion of the fixture base top surface proximate to the connector slot.Type: GrantFiled: March 21, 2008Date of Patent: June 15, 2010Assignee: Domaille Engineering, LLCInventors: Brian M. Patent number: 7738757Abstract: A data communications system includes optic adaptors that provide an interface between multiple line card chassis and a fabric card chassis. Optic adaptors can be added to the system to allow the addition of a number of line card chassis, thereby increasing the overall bandwidth of the system. The optic adaptors can also be separated from the fabric card chassis and line card chassis and upgraded to allow an increase in the overall bandwidth of the system. For example, optic adaptors that provide optical connections between a first number of line card chassis and the fabric card chassis can be detached from both the fabric card chassis and the respective line card chassis. Optic adaptors that provide optical connections between the fabric card chassis and a second, increased number of line card chassis are then installed within the fabric card chassis thereby allowing the additional line card chassis to be connected to the fabric card chassis.Type: GrantFiled: December 30, 2005Date of Patent: June 15, 2010Assignee: Cisco Technology, Inc.Inventors: Farhad Pakravan, John B. Patent number: RE41693Abstract: Excitation of a triad artificial photosynthetic reaction center consisting of a porphyrin (P) convalently linked to a fullerene electron acceptor (C60) and a carotenoid secondary donor (C) leads to the formation of a long-lived C+-P-C60? charge-separated state via photoinduced electron transfer. This reaction occurs in a frozen organic glass down to at least 8 K. At 77 K, charge recombination of C*+-P-C60? occurs on the ?s time scale, and yields solely the carotenoid triplet state. In the presence of a small (20 mT) static magnetic field, the lifetime of the charge-separated state is increased by 50%. This is ascribed to the effect of the magnetic field on interconversion of the singlet and triplet biradicals. At zero field, the initially formed singlet biradical state is in equilibrium with the three triplet biradical sublevels, and all four states have comparable populations. Decay to the carotenoid triplet only occurs from the three triplet sublevels.Type: GrantFiled: November 30, 2006Date of Patent: September 14, 2010Assignee: Arizona Board of Regents, Acting for and on Behalf of, Arizona State UniversityInventors: John D. Patent number: RE41840Abstract: A method and apparatus for maintaining an alignment of a laser diode with an optical fiber is disclosed. A mounting plate is made of a first material, and mounted on the mounting plate is a first substrate made of a second material. A semiconductor laser, with a light emitting side, is mounted on the first substrate. Separated from the first substrate by a predetermined distance is a second substrate made of a third material, and mounted on the second substrate is an optical fiber. The optical fiber is mounted, such that, the optical fiber is adjacent to and aligned with the light emitting side of the semiconductor laser. The first, second, and third materials making up the mounting plate, the first substrate, and the second substrate respectively, facilitate maintenance of the alignment between the optical fiber and the light emitting side of the semiconductor laser.Type: GrantFiled: January 12, 2006Date of Patent: October 19, 2010Inventors: Ernest Charles Gilman, Dana L.
