Local Trick Play Processing Patents (Class 386/343)
  • Patent number: 8208797
Abstract: The present invention provides a recording apparatus that generates a transport stream so that a boundary between recording units (aligned units) and a file division point (i.e., a boundary between GOPs) always coincide with each other without obtaining information on the file size or the like. When generating a transport stream by time-division multiplexing transport packets, n or more transport packets (e.g., null packets N) other than a video packet are inserted between a video packet group generated from a single encoding unit (GOP) and a video packet group subsequent to the video packet group. When d indicates the data length of the transport packet, h indicates the data length of a fixed-length header added to each of the transport packets before being recorded on a data recording medium, and L indicates a recording unit length to the data recording medium, L?(n+1)×(d+h) is satisfied.

  • Patent number: 8200071
Abstract: A record and replay apparatus comprises a transducing unit for reproducing a digital signal from a medium. A control unit controls a reproduction mode of the apparatus. A decoding is coupled to the transducing unit for decoding the digital signal and deriving therefrom a signal indicative of a specific picture type. The reproduction mode has a first period of reproduction at a normal play speed and a second period of reproduction at a speed greater than the play speed. The first and second periods alternating with the first period initiated responsive to the signal indicative of a specific picture type. In a further arrangement a first transducing unit records an MPEG signal. A control unit generates a signal, indicating an intra coded frame occurrence in the MPEG bit stream, which is recorded by a second transducing unit together with a servo reference signal.

  • Patent number: 8184960
Abstract: One or more methods and systems to efficiently process MPEG video in order to perform a reverse play or slow rewind function are presented. The method reduces system bandwidth required to implement the reverse play function when SD MPEG video is received by the MPEG decoder. Furthermore, the method maximizes the use of memory resources when one or more video frame buffers are implemented. The system comprises a first subsystem feeding one or more sequences of frames (e.g., feeding sessions) to a second subsystem. The first subsystem defines a set of parameters that is used to determine the one or more feeding sessions provided to the second subsystem. The second subsystem subsequently decodes the one or more feeding sessions using the set of parameters such that the video may be displayed.

Abstract: An ad in a movie can be a static ad having a position in the movie that cannot be moved, or a dynamic ad having a position in the movie that can be changed. When a viewer of the movie wishes to skip a portion of the movie containing the ad, the playback system determines whether the ad is static or dynamic. If the ad is static, then only the portion of the movie preceding the static ad can be skipped, that is, the ad is unskippable; this technique is referred to as “bounceback” since the end of the skip bounces back to the start of the static ad. If the ad is dynamic, then the ad is moved to after the end of the skip; this technique is referred to as “slip-ad” since the ad slips to later in the movie. When a movie has multiple ads, some can be static and some can be dynamic.

Abstract: According to one embodiment of the present invention, an instructor's exercise image data is compared with a user's exercise image data. A personal video of a viewer who is viewing a master video is acquired by an imaging module. An image motion period determination module determines a series of image motion periods of the master video and the personal video. A motion characteristic amount acquisition module acquires motion characteristic amounts from image motion parts. A motion characteristic amount comparison module compares a motion characteristic amount of the maser video with that of the personal video. A storage module stores information corresponding to a frame having a large difference in motion characteristic amount. A disclosure module reproduces the frames of the master video and the personal video based on the stored information at the time of play back and outputs the reproduced frames.

  • Patent number: 8014651
Abstract: Trick mode playback is implemented by disengaging a frame synchronization signal, and then decoding “I” and “P” frames to two (or more) buffers. Specifically, each buffer has a pointer that is associated with a memory/origin address. The pointers are locked in place by disengaging the frame synchronization signal. Once the pointers are locked in place, the “I” frames and “P” frames are decoded to the two buffers in an alternating fashion based on a continuous swapping of the memory addresses associated with the two pointers. Because both “I” and “P” frames (as opposed to only “I” frames) are decoded and displayed, the trick mode playback appears smoother. In addition, because the frame synchronization signal was disengaged, the frames can be decoded at a rate faster than a single frame time. That is, one frame need not be completely decoded and read out before the next frame is decoded.

Abstract: In a cyclic video recording method for an optical storage medium, the optical storage medium is divided into a set of forward seeking sub-zones and a set of backward seeking sub-zones. Initial values of a current sub-zone and a flag are set. The flag indicates a direction to seek the sub-zones and the initial value of the flag is determined by the initial value of the current sub-zone. When the flag indicates a forward direction, it determines whether the current sub-zone is the last sub-zone. When the current sub-zone is not the last sub-zone, a next sub-zone in the forward direction is set to become the current sub-zone and the write operation is performed. When the current sub-zone is the last sub-zone, the flag is set to a backward direction, the last sub-zone is set to become the current sub-zone and the write operation is performed.
