Patent number: 8116609Abstract: A method for traversing a multiplexed data packet stream including choosing a starting location in a multiplexed data packet stream; making a bi-directional search from the starting location to locate a nearest system stream object; and traversing the system stream as a doubly-linked list of objects. Traversing the system stream preferably includes traversing object links of the doubly-linked list of objects. The objects are further preferably cached with an LRU process. Multiple disjoint locations in the system stream can be accessed with a virtual linked list. The virtual linked list can be used to search forwardly; backwardly, or both forwardly and backwardly.Type: GrantFiled: July 29, 2006Date of Patent: February 14, 2012Assignee: 658276 N.B. Patent number: 8111975Abstract: A multimedia visual progress indication system that provides a cache bar that is overlaid onto the program material or displayed on a dedicated display. A cache bar indicates the length of a recording session or the length of stored program material and expands to the right when material is being recorded. Index and/or bookmark indicators are displayed next to the cache bar. A position indicator moves within the cache bar and tells the user visually where his current position is within the program material. Numeric time or counter mark of the current position is displayed in the vicinity of the cache bar. The trick play bar and its associated components are displayed for a predetermined time period.Type: GrantFiled: December 19, 2007Date of Patent: February 7, 2012Assignee: TiVo Inc.Inventors: Robert Vallone, Howard Look, Ain McKendrick

Patent number: 8081868Abstract: Time reconciliation, in which images that each are associated with a recording device system time are received, the recording device records the images at an original rate, a reference time is determined, and a difference time D representing an amount of time that the recording device system time is ahead of the reference time is calculated. In one alternative implementation, a down-sampling rate N is determined, and a time T to reconcile the recording device system time with the reference time is calculated based upon the down-sampling rate N and the difference time D. In another alternative implementation, a time T is determined, and a down-sampling rate N to reconcile the recording device system time with the reference time is calculated based upon the time T and the difference time D. In both alternative implementations, the images recorded by the recording device are down-sampled at 1/N of the original rate, and the down-sampled images are stored.Type: GrantFiled: February 2, 2007Date of Patent: December 20, 2011Assignee: LG Electronics Inc.Inventor: Eun Sang Choi

Patent number: 8064755Abstract: The present invention records a main stream containing video contents and an auxiliary stream related therewith as logically-separated clip files on a recording medium. The logically-separated clip files, however, are interleaved on a physical recording area. Because the interleaved units of the auxiliary stream can be individually identified by a file system of the recording medium, the auxiliary stream recorded on the recording medium can be replaced with another one during reproduction or presentation.Type: GrantFiled: November 7, 2003Date of Patent: November 22, 2011Assignee: LG Electronics Inc.Inventors: Kang Soo Seo, Byung Jin Kim, Soung Hyun Um

Patent number: 8014651Abstract: Trick mode playback is implemented by disengaging a frame synchronization signal, and then decoding “I” and “P” frames to two (or more) buffers. Specifically, each buffer has a pointer that is associated with a memory/origin address. The pointers are locked in place by disengaging the frame synchronization signal. Once the pointers are locked in place, the “I” frames and “P” frames are decoded to the two buffers in an alternating fashion based on a continuous swapping of the memory addresses associated with the two pointers. Because both “I” and “P” frames (as opposed to only “I” frames) are decoded and displayed, the trick mode playback appears smoother. In addition, because the frame synchronization signal was disengaged, the frames can be decoded at a rate faster than a single frame time. That is, one frame need not be completely decoded and read out before the next frame is decoded.Type: GrantFiled: June 26, 2003Date of Patent: September 6, 2011Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Francesco A. Recording/reproducing device capable of avoiding or reducing various malfunctions caused by dropping
Patent number: 8005347Abstract: A drop sensor detects a drop of a device. When the drop of the device is detected, a sub CPU allows a counter to count a drop time. When the device drops for a predetermined time or more, the sub CPU controls a regulator so that the regulator forcibly disconnects an electric power to be supplied to a hard disc, and writes a drop occurrence flag into a nonvolatile memory. When the power supply is again turned on, a main CPU allows a display section to display information indicating that the power supply is disconnected due to the drop of the device.Type: GrantFiled: July 12, 2006Date of Patent: August 23, 2011Assignee: Victor Company of Japan, LimitedInventor: Junichi Kasuya -
Patent number: 7962001Abstract: In conventional technology, when a program which operates in synchronization with reproduction of video and audio instructs a trick play of video and audio such as fast-forward and rewind, the trick play of the video and audio continues even after the program is terminated. This makes it impossible to cancel a redundant trick play which continues for an interval of time which is not expected by the program. In the present invention, a program which instructs a trick play of video and audio is retained, and when the program is terminated, it is determined whether or not the program has instructed the trick play, and if that program has instructed the trick play, the trick play of the video and audio is cancelled. As a result, it is possible to cancel such a redundant trick play which would otherwise continue for some interval of time which is not expected by the program.Type: GrantFiled: May 17, 2006Date of Patent: June 14, 2011Assignee: Panasonic CorporationInventors: Satoshi Hashimoto, Germano Leichsenring

Publication number: 20110019978Abstract: A media playback device may be operable to determine whether replacement media content corresponding to at least a portion of a received broadcast media stream is available during reception of the broadcast media stream from one or more broadcast sources. At least some of the replacement media content may then be retrieved when personal video recording (PVR) operations are requested during play of the received broadcast media stream, to enable seamless performance of the requested PVR operations using at least a portion of the retrieved replacement media content. Exemplary PVR operations may comprise pausing, fast forwarding, and/or rewinding. The replacement media content may be retrieved from a plurality of local and/or remote replacement servers. Availability of replacement media content, from remote replacement servers, may be determined based on programming data in said broadcast media stream, routing information provided by a broadcast source, and/or by inquiry via one or more cataloguing servers.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 11, 2009Publication date: January 27, 2011Inventor: Adil Jagmag

Publication number: 20110008016Abstract: A Digital Micro Ad (DMA) system and method designed to adapt to changing viewer behavior by detecting spot fast-forward, or other trick play, and popping a graphic, or other messages, over video. This graphic displays the advertiser brand message to achieve a brief imprint on the viewer. The DMA system augments the linear advertisement or the like (the spot) so the advertiser can reach their intended target audience. The system starts with offline media processing. Off the shelf encoded spots are processed to embed DMA enabling content identifying “metadata” packets and in-line graphics images. Next, when the content is played to air, this DMA enabled content is streamed to the DVR device. Within the DVR, the DMA engine detects the embedded graphic images which are recovered and saved in the DVR. Finally, when a DVR recorded program is played back, the embedded content ID metadata packets “arm” the DMA engine.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 12, 2010Publication date: January 13, 2011Applicant: STEALTH MARKETING INC.Inventors: Steve DeLaney, Floyd W.
