Abstract: Prior to execution of a printing operation, a print preparatory operation is conducted collectively on all developer cartridges mounted to a developing unit, thereby bringing all the developer cartridges into a printable state. Therefore, even if a residual amount of toner in the cartridge runs too low to continue the printing operation performed using one of plural cartridges mounted to the developing unit, the printing operation is allowed to continue by switching the cartridge to the next cartridge. Hence, a large volume of monochromatic prints may be produced in an efficient manner.

Abstract: Optimization of a density control factor accompanying formation of a patch image is executed every time a predetermined period of time elapses since the end of a preceding image forming operation. Since an image is formed at regular intervals in this manner, it is possible to suppress a density variation which is created as toner carried on a developer roller is left unused for long. This effect further improves when the developer roller is rotated idle prior to formation of a patch image or regularly at predetermined timing.

Abstract: In order to prevent an imaging forming process of an electrostatographic reproduction apparatus from becoming contaminated with fuser release oil, a substantially uniform layer of pigmented marking particles from a development subsystem of the image forming process is deposited onto a photoconductive member of the image forming process during any non-imaging cycles of the process, including cycle down, non-imaging skip frames, or recovery from a receiver jam. The substantially uniform layer of pigmented marking particles acts as a barrier to block fuser release oil from the photoconductive member and as a vehicle to carry away contaminating fuser release oil.

Abstract: Artificial toner consumption is triggered to minimize the incidence of “conditioned” toner when a comparison of the rate of toner consumption to the mechanical activity of the electrophotographic printing device indicates that the toner consumption rate is too low. The artificial toner consumption operation may be achieved through a dummy print operation where an intentionally un-printed image is formed on a photoconductive drum, but the corresponding toner is routed to appropriate waste toner reservoir(s) and the image is not printed on the recording medium. The dummy print toner may be cleaned from the photoconductive drum without being transferred to an intermediate transfer medium and/or may be cleaned from the intermediate transfer medium, both without transferring the toner to the recording medium. The dummy print operation may correspond to a next normally occurring interdocument gap or a dedicated dummy print period inserted between print jobs.

The motor control unit provides a plurality of speed levels including a first speed level for rotating the photosensitive body during printing and another speed level for rotating the photosensitive body at a reduced speed lower than the speed used during printing. The speed is changed-over between the plurality of speed levels depending on the operating condition. Thereby, deterioration of the photosensitive body due to ozone generated from the charger is prevented, and additional deterioration of the photosensitive body due to rotation thereof other than during a printing operation is also prevented.

Abstract: In an image forming apparatus having a reverse development system and using a two-component developer, respective potentials applied when charging an image bearing member and when applying a development bias to a developer bearing member are attenuated when the image bearing member is driven for an operation other than an image forming operation, compared to respective level of potentials applied when the image bearing member is driven for the image forming operation. Thus, an occurrence of an adhesion of a carrier to an image bearing member is reduced to produce a high quality image, when a power switch of the apparatus is turned off or when a door of the apparatus is opened while the image bearing member is driven for an operation other than the image forming operation, or when the apparatus is activated again after the power switch is turned off.
