Patent number: 6934504Abstract: A frame image (210) with 5-mm wide margins is formed on a paper sheet on the basis of the leading end and widthwise end positions of the paper sheet (107) detected by a contact image sensor (CIS) (204) in an adjustment mode. After that, this paper sheet (107) is circulated to a feed position via a circulating path (206) and paper convey path (205), and the CIS (204) detects the frame image position formed on the circulated paper sheet and its paper end portion so as to detect errors from the 5-mm wide margins. Correction values which can cancel these errors are stored in a correction parameter storage unit (71), and forming start timing control is made using these correction values upon forming an image in an actual job. In this way, an image forming apparatus which can detect the paper feed timing with high precision, can eliminate deterioration of the image position precision due to mounting errors and durability of components, and can always precisely adjust the image position is provided.Type: GrantFiled: July 29, 2004Date of Patent: August 23, 2005Assignee: Canon Kabushiki KaishaInventor: Tetsuya Morita

Patent number: 6714758Abstract: A second print device prints images on a rear surface of a web with no sprockets after a first print device prints images on a front surface of the web. A CPF-OFF signal is generated at a time of when an irradiating unit of the second print device completes irradiating for a last page. The second print device calculates, based on a web transport speed at the generation timing of the CPF-OFF signal, a time duration required for the web to reach a predetermined waiting position after the CPF-OFF signal was generated, and starts counting a clock when the time duration elapses from when the CPF-OFF signal was generated. Publication number: 20030113149Abstract: A sheet media position sensor device is disclosed which incorporates a pair of opposed nipped rollers positioned laterally across a sheet media transport path. One roller is electrically conductive while the opposed roller has an electrically conductive resilient coating. The coated roller is insulated at its mid point to divide the coating on the roller into two halves. A DC voltage is applied to the electrical conductive roller with current passing equally through each half of the adjacent coated roller. As sheet media is passed along the transport path and between the two nipped rollers, the sheet media acts as an insulator to reduce the actual contact area and therefore, the current flow between the conductive roller and the coated halves of the nipped roller. This reduced current flow is directly proportionate to the remaining contact area for each half of the roller which specifically identifies the lateral position of the sheet media.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 14, 2001Publication date: June 19, 2003Inventor: Robert W. Patent number: 6560376Abstract: A method for automatically cropping, rotating, and scaling a scanned image to ensure that a printed copy of the scanned image is the same size as the original, when possible. The method attempts to honor the default or operator designated orientation of the printed image, but will automatically rotate the image if that will eliminate unnecessary image reduction. Optimal orientation and scaling factors are automatically determined based on the target page size and the size and shape of the information of interest in the original image (not the boundaries of the original document). The operator selects a desired printed orientation (or accepts a default orientation) and selects a desired printed paper size (or accepts a default printed paper size). If an image will fit within the printable margins without rotation or cropping, the image is simply printed without modification. If the image will fit without rotation by cropping white space, then white space is cropped.Type: GrantFiled: August 13, 2002Date of Patent: May 6, 2003Assignee: Hewlett Packard Development Company, L.P.Inventors: Benjamin D. Patent number: 6522843Abstract: When it is judged that a sheet S is not an ordinary paper but a thick paper or an OHP film sheet, or that the arrival of the sheet S at a pair of timing rollers 48 is delayed due to a slip for example beyond an allowable period of time, a controller 70 judges that a condition for transferring or fixing an image on the sheet S is not met. As a result, a secondary transfer roller 34 and a cleaner 38 are retreated from an intermediate transfer belt 12, and in this state, the intermediate transfer belt 12 carrying a toner image I thereon is made idle at least about one revolution without transferring the image I.Type: GrantFiled: June 13, 2001Date of Patent: February 18, 2003Assignee: Minolta Co., Ltd.Inventors: Takanobu Yamada, Seiichi Munemori, Yuusuke Morikami

Patent number: 6516180Abstract: An image forming apparatus such as a printer and a copier has rotating devices such as a drum and a press roller to print an image on a paper sheet while rotating and a paper-transporting mechanism having guide rollers and timing rollers for transporting a paper sheet to these rotary devices, controlled by a control device such that irregularities in the printed images due to fluctuations in the speed of transportation of the paper sheets. The guide rollers may be operated to transport the paper sheet at a faster speed than the paper sheet is transported by the rotary devices such that the paper sheet becomes bent before being delivered to the rotary devices to be printed on. The control may be such that the guide rollers transport the paper sheet while the timing rollers downstream is released from the transportation of paper sheets. The control device may also operate so as to stop the guide rollers when the paper sheet comes to a position where the rotary devices can start transporting it.Type: GrantFiled: September 28, 2001Date of Patent: February 4, 2003Assignees: Riso Kagaku Corporation, OMRON CorporationInventors: Makoto Miyaki, Hideyuki Sekiguchi, Akira Yasuda, Atsushi Kubota, Kazuyuki Yoshida, Kouji Matsuura, Shigenori Kurokawa, Takeshi Kakinuma

Patent number: 6496678Abstract: A method and apparatus for setting registration in a multicolor printing machine (1), the print results on print substrates (4) being registered and used to control the production of color separations (3, 3′, . . . ) such that in-register prints are achieved. A change L? in the dimensions (7, 8, 7′, 8′) of the printing substrates (4) is determined by the print, in order to take this change into account such that coincidence can be achieved between a recto print and verso print. This is achieved by the changes in the dimensions (7, 8, 7′, 8′) of the recto print (6) being determined and being used to control the digital production of the color separations (3, 3′, . . . ) for the verso print (5) such that after being printed, it coincides with the recto print (6).Type: GrantFiled: May 15, 2001Date of Patent: December 17, 2002Assignee: NexPress Solutions LLCInventors: Patrick Metzler, Karlheinz Walter Peter

Patent number: 6452147Abstract: An image forming apparatus has a function for correcting a condition for an image formation in accordance with a detection result given by a detecting unit which detects a toner pattern formed on a transfer medium by an image holding component. A deviation obtaining unit obtains a deviation in the main scanning direction between a detecting position on the transfer medium and a predetermined point of the toner pattern to be formed on the transfer medium, the detecting position being a position where the detecting unit detects the toner pattern. An adjusting unit adjusts, in accordance with the deviation obtained by the deviation obtaining unit, a positional relation in the main scanning direction between the detecting position and the predetermined point to reduce the deviation.Type: GrantFiled: January 20, 1999Date of Patent: September 17, 2002Assignee: Minolta Co., Ltd.Inventor: Yasuyuki Inada
