  • Patent number: 5884347
Abstract: Support systems for vessels such as above-ground swimming pools are disclosed. Each system may include one or more buttresses adapted to support substantially the entire vertical height of the side wall or each of a series of side walls of the pool. The buttresses, which flare along their lengths, closely match the support they provide each side wall to the outward water pressure present along its height for enhanced reliability. The diminished space required for installation of the disclosed buttresses reduces the surface area required for their associated pool.

  • Patent number: 5881402
Abstract: An in-ground pool with an inflatable flange and a non-rigid flexible body to permit the body to conform to the interior surface of a hole. The pool is designed with an exterior circumferential flange which is placed around the ledge of a hole dug in sand or soil which positions the body of the pool over the interior surface of the hole. The pool may then be filled with water with the interior surface of the hole acting as lateral support for the pool. The flange is secured to the ground with stakes which engage the flange and are driven into the ground around the exterior perimeter of the flange. When it is desired to remove the pool, the water is removed and the flange deflated so that the pool may be folded for storage and/or transport.

  • Patent number: 5802631
Abstract: A method for installing a liner in a swimming pool including a wall having a liner edge retainer extending along the upper periphery. With the pool containing water, an edge of a liner is attached to the retainer at a first position on the wall and a pulling device is attached to the liner edge at a position opposite the retainer attachment. The pulling device is manipulated to drag the liner along the pool bottom and up the wall to a position opposite the first position where the edge is then attached to the retainer. A substantial portion of the pool water is scooped up in the liner and the remaining water can be pumped from between the wall and liner. The method can be used to install a second liner over an existing first liner by using different liner edge retainers. More than one embodiment of the pulling device is disclosed.

  • Patent number: 5785846
Abstract: An improved filtration system for swimming pools and the like is disclosed, in which none of the water passing through the filter passes through the recirculating pump for the swimming pool. This is accomplished by connecting the water inlet of the filter directly with the floor drain and surface skimmer. The outlet from the filter is interconnected with an entrainment nozzle supplied with water under pressure from the recirculating pump for the pool. The pump withdraws water directly from the pool, and supplies that water under pressure to the entrainment nozzle, which then draws water through the filter from the outlet to mix such filtered water with the water supplied by the pump to the entrainment nozzle for return to a return outlet in the pool. As a consequence, water flowing through the filter is drawn through it by means of suction, rather than by supplying the water under pressure.

  • Patent number: 5727264
Abstract: The spa disposed outside the wall of the swimming pool is attached to the swimming pool, i.e., uses a part of the wall system of the swimming pool, by means of a special panel formed with an undercut or recessed portion that accepts a integrally formed at the top of the molded plastic spa. The result is a continuous flow of the wall system footing sad surrounding deck. The perimeter of the molded plastic modular spa shell is supported by panels that also incorporate the deck support system preferably an X-type brace support system used around the swimming pool. A continuous, homogenous concrete bond beam is poured around the entire perimeter of the pool and integrated spa. Operation of the pool and the spa (in either the spa spillway waterfall mode or spa mode) may be controlled by manually manipulating the valving system or by electronically activated motorized valves.

  • Patent number: 5713164
Abstract: The installation of a vinyl liner within an in-ground swimming pool is carried out using a direct drive, over-hung vacuum machine to exhaust air from between the liner and the steel walls and cement bowl within which the liner is installed. The vacuum machine has the overhung impellor located within a volute chamber isolated from the driving electric motor, so that the induced air flow is segregated from the driving motor. The vacuum machine impellor is of non-corrosive material, to avoid corrosion of the impellor when water is entrained, and to avoid the consequent imbalance and undue wear of the bearing that would otherweise ensue. The paddle-style impellor blades ensure that the vacuum suction is insufficient to cause intake of the pool liner into the air-evacuation hose.

  • Patent number: 5325644
Abstract: A concrete form and a pool wall and deck support system is disclosed. The pool wall may be formed of steel, plastic, aluminum or wood and has a plurality of wall panels secured together in end-to-end relation to define the perimeter of the structure. Wall supports or brace structures fabricated from non-compressible material such as concrete are attached to, and support both the wall of the pool and the perimeter deck therearound. The pool wall, coping and deck are supported by the top of the concrete brace structure. In a preferred embodiment, the brace structure is fabricated from pairs of nestable forms made from a suitable material such as corrugated cardboard and are located beside the pool walls, reinforcing bars are attached to the pool walls and interconnect the latter with the walls and the forms are filled with concrete and are so structured as to have the concrete engage the flanges of the pool wall panels.

Abstract: An improved swimming pool construction and cover includes a swimming pool cover laid on the water of the pool and having a marginal edge provided with one component of the two component elongated locking member. The second component of the locking member is disposed in the pool coping or deck edge accessible at the pool interior for engagement by the locking member component on the pool cover. The locking component associated wit the pool is provided in a retrofit configuration by securing a locking component to a vinyl liner bead lock secured in the vinyl liner bead channel in a pool coping. In a new vinyl-lined pool construction, a coping is provided with a secondary channel with one component of the cover locking member secured therein. In a gunnite pool, a channel is formed in the deck edge and a component of the releasable cover locking member is secured in the channel for securement of the pool cover thereto. Apparatus and methods are disclosed.

  • Patent number: 5231807
Abstract: A swimming pool support structure comprises an elongate upright member having a longitudinal axis and a pivot attached at least indirectly to the upright member at one end thereof for defining an axis of rotation extending in a direction parallel to the longitudinal axis. An elongate top rail member is provided at an end with a connector for pivotably connecting the top rail member to the upright member at the pivot, while a fastener is provided for fixing the top rail member to the upright member upon the attainment of a desired orientation angle of the top rail member with respect to the upright member. A swimming pool incorporating the support structure is installed by erecting a first upright member at a predetermined location, pivotally attaching a first end of a first top rail member to the pivot pin of that first upright member, rotating the top rail member about the pivot pin until a first desired angle of orientation is attained between the top rail member and the bearing plate of the upright member.

  • Patent number: 5205791
Abstract: A sandbox provided for indoor use consists of a sheet of fabric-like material having a collapsible wall about its perimeter such that, when the sheet is smoothed into a substantially flat horizontal condition, the collapsible wall stands in substantially vertical relation along the perimeter of the sheet. Thus, the smoothed out sheet and the vertical wall define a contained play area to hold sand. Preferably, the wall is formed of sections of a cushion-like material such as foam rubber covered by material such as that used to form the horizontal sheet. Thus the wall would be collapsible along the vertical folds defined at the junctions of the covered foam rubber sections. Interior to the perimeter of the sandbox, the upper surface of the sheet is fitted with a gathering mechanism, typically a drawstring laid out in circular fashion on the top surface of the sheet with a circular stretch of material covering the drawstring and fixed to the sheet.
