Patent number: 6997550Abstract: Print is made on a recording paper by running an ink carriage along the supporting axis in a reciprocating motion. The ink carriage includes ink heads respectively provided with a front ink nozzle and a back ink nozzle facing their respective directions, so that print is made simultaneously at two portions on the recording paper along the transportation direction in which the recording paper is transported through a single transportation path one by one. Consequently, there can be provided an ink jet printer which can improve printing efficiency by increasing a printing rate and printing resolution, and realizing printing of an overstrike character, simultaneous printing of mixed information, double-side printing, etc.Type: GrantFiled: August 6, 2004Date of Patent: February 14, 2006Assignee: Sharp Kabushiki KaishaInventors: Shoko Uchisako, Nobuya Kishi, Hiroki Watanabe, Tetsuo Fukumoto, Takateru Yamamoto, Kenji Tanaka, Keisuke Tateishi, Masako Shinozuka

Patent number: 6988842Abstract: A printing apparatus and method to for use in a continuous high velocity mail production system, preferably for printing postal indicia. A transport path conveys a series of mail pieces at a print velocity. At least two ink jet print heads are available to perform printing operations. During normal operation, only one print head is operating at a time. To allow continuous uninterrupted operation, when a first print head is removed from service for a maintenance operation, a second print head is automatically brought into service. Adjustments to the triggering of the print cycle are made to account for the different print heads at different locations.Type: GrantFiled: September 30, 2003Date of Patent: January 24, 2006Assignee: Pitney Bowes Inc.Inventors: John P. Miller, John W. Sussmeier, Anthony E. Yap

Patent number: 6872016Abstract: In an impact dot print head there is provided a fitting structure for fitting an inner periphery-side cylindrical portion of a yoke and an inner periphery-side ring-shaped portion of an armature spacer with each other so that the inner periphery-side cylindrical portion of the yoke and the inner periphery-side ring-shaped portion of the armature spacer push against each other, thereby permitting a magnetic flux to flow efficiently between the armature spacer and the yoke through the contact face between the inner periphery-side cylindrical portion of the yoke and the inner periphery-side ring-shaped portion of the armature spacer.Type: GrantFiled: February 28, 2003Date of Patent: March 29, 2005Assignee: Toshiba TEC Kabushiki KaishaInventor: Takahiro Kawaguchi

Patent number: 6695495Abstract: An ink density closed loop control system for an ink ribbon of an impact printer having a reservoir roller formed of an ink absorbent material with at least one or more channels within the reservoir roller fluidly connected to a pump and ink supply. A transfer roller can contact the reservoir roller for imparting ink to the ink ribbon. A sensor senses the relative amount of ink on the print ribbon and an electrical drive responsive to the sensor drives the pump for a flow of ink to the one or more channels. The sensor can sense ink on different segments of the ribbon and, with two or more channels in the reservoir roller can distribute ink to two or more segments of the reservoir roller depending upon the ink sensed at a particular segment of the ribbon. A further enhancement of this invention provides a multi-viscosity ink to compensate for changes in ambient temperature conditions.Type: GrantFiled: March 12, 2003Date of Patent: February 24, 2004Assignee: Printronix, Inc.Inventors: Dennis R. White, Jeng-Dung Jou, Lihu Chiu, Gordon B. Barrus, Y. Grant Chang

Patent number: 6641314Abstract: A color thermal printer has a feed roller set, a thermal head, and a tension roller set that are serially arranged along a transporting path. The feed roller set and the tension roller set are rotated by respectively a stepping motor and a DC motor. The stepping motor rotates forwards. Simultaneously, the DC motor rotates the tension roller set forwards, to apply a first transporting force to the continuous recording sheet at a level higher than a predetermined transporting force of the feed roller set. Also, the stepping motor rotates backwards. Simultaneously, the DC motor rotates the tension roller set backwards, to apply a second transporting force to the continuous recording sheet at a level lower than the predetermined transporting force.Type: GrantFiled: March 8, 2002Date of Patent: November 4, 2003Assignee: Fuji Photo Film Co., Ltd.Inventor: Shusuke Mogi

Patent number: 6609845Abstract: A printing apparatus, which performs printing by using a full-line type printhead, prints an image in accordance with an attachment angle of the printhead, and automatically performs registration adjustment when using plural printheads. In the apparatus, an angle of the printhead relative to a transfer direction of a print medium is detected, image data received in raster format is divided into plural pixel blocks, the divided pixel blocks are stored into a memory, the order of reading the pixel blocks from the memory is determined based on the detected relative angle, and the read data is transmitted to the printhead and used for printing.Type: GrantFiled: July 19, 2000Date of Patent: August 26, 2003Assignee: Canon Kabushiki KaishaInventor: Takayuki Ninomiya

Patent number: 6543946Abstract: A combination printer is described. The combination printer includes a thermal head and an ink printing head, such as a thermal transfer printing head. The thermal head thermally prints on thermal paper by heating. The thermal transfer printing head prints ink on the thermal paper by thermally transferring ink from an ink film to the thermal paper. The thermal transfer head is preferably positioned downstream relative to the first head along a paper flow path of the thermal paper. The printer further includes a first platen that serves as a back support for the thermal head, and a second platen that serves as a back support for the thermal transfer printing head.Type: GrantFiled: July 6, 2001Date of Patent: April 8, 2003Assignee: ALPS Electric Co., Ltd.Inventors: Fumihisa Hori, Tsuyoshi Miyano, Masahiko Mori

Patent number: 6283649Abstract: A plurality of thermal heads for different colors, are disposed in parallel in a line-printing direction, being offset with respect to each other in a transport direction along which an image-forming sheet is moved via a conveyer path. The image forming sheet is a pressure/temperature-sensitive sheet or a temperature-sensitive sheet. The thermal heads are moved in the line-printing direction. Adjacent-opposing ends of adjacent thermal heads are separated in the line-printing direction, and overlap in the transport direction. The thermal heads are controlled so as to simultaneously generate image-pixels on the image-forming sheet. The printing speed is high due to a plurality of colors being simultaneously printed. The thermal heads are used as part of pressure applying unit. The pressure applying unit is provided for selectively applying predetermined pressure to the micro-capsules, when the image-forming sheet is a pressure/temperature-sensitive sheet.Type: GrantFiled: June 23, 2000Date of Patent: September 4, 2001Assignee: Asahi Kogaku Kogyo Kabushiki KaishaInventors: Minoru Suzuki, Hiroshi Orita, Hiroyuki Saito, Katsuyoshi Suzuki, Koichi Furusawa
