  • Patent number: 8366333
Abstract: This invention relates to an apparatus and method capable of appropriately preventing a printing medium from being diagonally conveyed upon feed regardless of changes in printing medium feed conditions. In this invention, the maximum output value of a PWM signal is compared with the sum of a predetermined bias value and the PWM signal when a sensor detects the tip of a fed printing medium. If the sum is smaller than the maximum output value, it is monitored that the value of the PWM signal increases by the bias value. If the sum is equal to or larger than the maximum output value, it is monitored that the conveyance speed of the printing medium becomes smaller than a predetermined threshold value. Control is performed on the basis of the monitor results to stop driving a DC motor that supplies a driving force to rollers used for feed and conveyance.

  • Patent number: 8366332
Abstract: When the paper loaded in a printer is changed to a different type of paper, the paper setting in the printer can be easily updated without a paper mismatch error occurring. When the paper is replaced or the paper setting is changed in the printer 1, the cover 3 is first opened, the roll paper 12 is removed from the roll paper compartment 11, and the cover 3 is then closed. A paper settings update command from the host device 32 is received and executed when no roll paper is loaded. After the command is executed, the cover 3 is opened, new roll paper 12 is loaded, and the cover 3 is closed. The printer 1 then indexes the newly loaded paper for printing, and executes a paper identification process to determine if the newly loaded paper matches the content of the current paper settings.

Abstract: Provided herein is a printer, including a printing head that executes printing in units of columns of dots; a feed roller that feeds a print medium in synchrony with driving of the printing head; a motor that constitutes a drive source for the feed roller; a memory section that memorizes a predicted idling amount, which is the amount of idling predicted to occur when motor drive starts; and a drive control section that controls driving of the printing head and the motor, wherein when printing operation is halted and restarted, the drive control section drives the motor by a first idling amount that is smaller than the predicted idling amount, implements printing based on data for a first dot column to be printed at printing restart, further drives the motor by a subtraction amount that equals the predicted idling amount minus the first idling amount, and then starts printing from first dot column data.
