  • Patent number: 5039043
Abstract: A post holder is provided with a breaking arrangement to hold a post without application or external force even under the influence of gravity. In the preferred embodiment, a post holder is provided with a shoe which contacts the post. The shoe is urged toward the post with a spring, in the preferred embodiment a single convolution spring. Preferably, the shoe has a relatively large face area contacting the post, thereby provide more positive locking of the post relative to the post holder with the application of lesser external force. Ideally, the spring applies sufficient force on the shoe that the post does not move under the force of gravity. In operation, the user may remove the external force, move the post relative to the post holder, and reapply an external locking force, at any time the post being supported by the breaking arrangement. In this way, the user may move the post relative to the post holder with a single hand.

  • Patent number: 4895471
Abstract: An expander mechanism to be used with telescoping tubes which might form, for example, a closet or a shower curtain rod. The mechanism has a bushing with a center threaded opening for receiving a threaded shaft of a bolt. A lock washer, which is resiliently deformable in one direction only, is attached to the head of the bolt. The bolt with the lock washer is threaded into the bushing. The bushing is then mounted on an end portion of a first tube. The first tube is slidable inside a second tube of larger diameter. When the first tube is telescoped within the second tube, an applied axial force causes the washer to deform and thus allows the first tube with the attached bushing, bolt, and washer combination to slide along the inside of the second tube, allowing the assembly of the two telescoping tubes to expand in length. Once the bolt and washer combination has been pulled through the tube in one direction and the axial force is no longer applied, the deformed washer returns to its original shape.

  • Patent number: 4761092
Abstract: A locking mechanism for a telescoping support, such as a tripod leg, which includes an outer tubular section and a slidable inner tubular section is disclosed. The locking mechanism includes a U-shaped mounting bracket conforming to the cross-sectional shape of the outer tubular section and is held against sliding movement along the outer section by lip portions bent outwardly on either side of the bracket. The bracket is further retained against separation from the outer tubular section by a camming lever pivotably mounted between the two arms of the bracket on the side of the leg section opposite the base portion of the bracket, thereby closing the opening of the bracket. The camming lever is pivotable for cammingly engaging the inner tubular section through a window opening formed in the outer tubular section, thereby to lock the two sections against telescoping movement.

  • Patent number: 4733681
Abstract: A combination umbrella and golf ball retriever which uses the umbrella strut as a socket pipe to accommodate several telescopically nested tubes so as to form an elongated handle for a golf ball retriever. There is an eccentric-grooved stud inserted at one end of the inside tube of each two neighboring tubes. The eccentric-grooved portion of this stud matches with a similar eccentric circular bushing. When the inner tube turns to one direction, the outside part of the circular bushing will press tightly against the inner wall of the outside tube and lock up the two neighboring tubes. An opposite turn at the inner tube will set loose the circular bushing and allow both neighboring tubes to slide in and out freely so as to adjust the length of the handle of the golf ball retriever.
