Abstract: A socket for a ball joint having a socket body with an opening and a hollow space, which comprises a concave inside peripheral surface that delimits the hollow space and extends around a longitudinal axis, and which is axially divided into two body halves which merge together in a transition zone, each of which comprises an inside peripheral surface half. A first body half comprises a first inside peripheral surface half which lies on a spherical surface and is closed, in the circumferential direction, and a second body half which comprises the socket opening, at least one slot extending axially and a second inside peripheral surface half which is closed in the circumferential direction, or closed apart from the slot. The second body half is designed such that the second inside peripheral surface half lies outside the spherical surface at least an axial distance away from the transition zone.

  • Patent number: 11149783
Abstract: A tolerance absorbing spacer for controlling manufacturing dimensional tolerance variation in products made with multiple internal components, each requiring unique dimensional tolerance allowance. This component adjusts and compensates for the resulting overall cumulative component height variation within an assembly of components, sometimes referred to as “stack height” by compensating for the maximum to minimum range of possible assembly heights, compressing and yielding under applied external force until all excess internal clearance is removed, except for a small, and desirable remaining clearance. This component yields and becomes essentially fully plastic, to provide the necessary tolerance adjustment feature only after reaching a predetermined, minimum force which exceeds all applied forces the component could reasonably encounter in service use and below which, the tolerance absorbing spacer remains fully rigid.

  • Patent number: 10308089
Abstract: The ball joint assembly includes a housing that has an inner wall which surrounds an open bore that extends along a central axis. The ball joint assembly further includes a ball stud with a ball portion that is received in the open bore of the housing and with a shank portion that projects out of the open bore through an open end of the housing. At least one bearing is also disposed in the open bore. The at least one bearing has a curved bearing surface which is in slidable contact with the ball portion of the ball stud for allowing the ball stud and the housing to rotate and articulate relative to one another. The bearing is made as a single, monolithic piece of nylon 4/6.

  • Patent number: 8616800
Abstract: A ball joint and production method thereof that ensure that grease retainers are provided on the entire contact surface of a resin sheet between an outer surface of a round head of a ball stud and the contact surface to properly maintain lubrication between the round head and the resin sheet. Graphite particles are dispersed over an inner surface of the resin sheet, and the resin sheet and the round head of the ball stud are inserted in a housing. An open end portion of a housing body is swaged to be reduced in diameter. The graphite particles are pressed against the inner surface of the resin sheet, whereby portions of the inner surface of the resin sheet against which the graphite particles abut are depressed. Thus, gaps are formed around the respective graphite particles. Grease enters the gaps, which each function as a grease retainer.

  • Patent number: 7845875
Abstract: The light articulation ball-joint comprises a metal inner ring and a metal outer ring, provided respectively with a spherical outer surface and a spherical inner surface. The ball-joint also comprises a first contact layer, applied to the spherical surface of one of the rings, and a second contact layer, applied to the spherical surface of the other ring. According to the invention, the first contact layer has a hardness which is less than the hardness of the second contact layer and a thickness which is greater than the thickness of the second contact layer, the first contact layer further being adapted to release particles of solid lubricant by friction with the second contact layer.

  • Patent number: 6382865
Abstract: A base mounted lubricated ball joint utilizing a hollow socket case (20) is attached to an automobile axle or other workpiece by welding or bolting. A ball (42) is disposed within a socket (28) contained within the case and rotates freely within. A socket cap (52) is attached to the case leaving an upper portion of the ball (42) exposed, thereby permitting orbiting of the ball (42) upon its rotational axis limited only by its geometrical configuration. To utilize the invention, a shaft, a hydraulic cylinder, a table leg or a heavy machinery coupling is attached to the ball by threads. The ball joint is lubricated with grease through a grease fitting, which penetrate the joint and is distributed through grooves (36) located in both the ball and the case.

  • Patent number: 4320983
Abstract: A ball joint includes a stud ball relatively slidably press-fitted in a ball seat consisting of a material which absorbs moisture or water and thereby expands volumetrically. The ball seat is mounted in a socket and held in position by an end cover. At least one through bore is formed in the socket and/or the end cover in order to maintain the ball seat in contact with ambient air so that the ball seat gradually expands to provide an increased frictional force between the stud ball and the ball seat. The expansion of the ball seat compensates for the gradual decrease in the frictional force with time due to the wear of the relatively sliding elements and permanent deformation of the ball seat.

  • Patent number: 4118009
Abstract: Sintered articles characterized by a surface of revolution, such as truncated spherical balls and spherical ball valves, e.g., plain spherical bearing balls, are provided made by the powder metal compaction and sintering of blanks followed, in the case of ball elements, by densification of the outer spherical surface by mechanical working, such as by roll-forming, the balls so produced being characterized by improved sphericity and dimensional tolerance and improved wear resistance combined with optimum resistance to corrosion. The spherical surface of the ball is substantially free of pores, has a work hardened structure and has a density at and adjacent the surface of at least about 95% of the theoretical density of the metal, the density substantially below the surface being less and ranging to as low as at least about 70% of theoretical density.
