  • Patent number: 6568703
Abstract: A novel apparatus and method for attaching a rounded member, such as an inflator assembly for an automobile air bag, to another member or surface, particularly a flat surface, is disclosed. A spacer, which may take the form of a split ring, is positioned around an attachment surface of the rounded member. Then, while the spacer is supported against further motion along the inflator, a flange having a shank with a tapered inside diameter may be passed around the inflator and spacer. As the inside diameter of the flange narrows to contact the spacer, the flange exerts inward pressure tending to frictionally engage the inflator with the spacer, and the spacer with the flange. Thus, an interference fit having a high retention strength may be comparatively easily and rapidly formed. The spacer may be hardened so as to indent the inflator and/or the flange to enhance the retention strength of the assembly.

  • Patent number: 4867610
Abstract: The invention comprises a quick disconnect apparatus for locking a tubular table leg to a table top. An insert plug extends downwardly below the table top and carries an annular resilient member which is inserted into the table leg. An actuator has a camming surface and is movable between two positions. In one position, it pulls the resilient member into forceful engagement with a ramped lower extension of the plug, causing the resilient member to expand and frictionally engage the inner surface of the leg, locking it in place. In its other position, the actuator releases the resilient member, causing it to relax and disengage from the leg.

  • Patent number: 4854549
Abstract: A newel post fastener and rail attachment consisting of a bolt or screw perpendicularly oriented and fused to the center of a metal disk, with holes encircling its periphery, allows the joining of newel posts to the floor or stair tread and joining of railing to newel posts such that the fastener means is not visible after connection of the members. In the manner of fastening the newel post to the floor, the need for additional millwork to conceal the means of fastening is obviated.

  • Patent number: 4809480
Abstract: A metal building frame and method for its assembly is disclosed. The building frame includes channel shaped structural members which are utilized for rafters, girders, and vertical columns. The various structural members are joined together by specially designed joining clips which provide structural strength and ease of assembly. Each of the clips includes a channel shape member into which one of the structural members can be inserted and bolted in place. Ridge clips join two of the rafters and are joined together at a preselected angle to define the roofline of the building. A rafter clip is attached to the top of each of the vertical columns and includes and angled portion which is bolted to the outer end of each of the rafters at an angle which is consistent with the preselected angle. The lower end of each vertical column is bolted to a base clip which in turn provides a base member which may be bolted to the floor of the building.

  • Patent number: 4757653
Abstract: An apparatus and method for the construction of stairs provides a series of specially-designed brackets to enable the builder to screw or bolt the steps to the inside surface of the stringers, thereby obviating the need to notch the stringers, and avoiding undesirable wood-to-wood contact. In addition, such bolting is considerably more efficient than traditional nailing, and allows easy access to and replacement of the steps and/or hardware when necessary. Furthermore, this bolting and bracket method enables the use of precalculated dimensional instructions for proper location of the brackets on the stringers, and thus is especially conducive to the modular construction and prefabrication of stairs.

  • Patent number: 4645168
Abstract: A traffic marker support comprises a base (10) formed from polyvinyl chloride with a first angle iron section (16) and a second angle iron section (18) molded integral therewith. The lateral sides of the angle iron sections (16) and (18) form a channel (24) in the base (10). An upright marker (12) is disposed within the channel (24) and a bolt (30) used to secure the devices together. The lower surface (20) of the angle iron (18) and the lower surface (22) of the angle iron (16) are imbedded within the base (10) proximate the lower surface thereof with the channel (24) extending below the surface of the base (10) but not exposing the apexes of the angle iron sections (16) and (18). The reinforcement structure prevents rotational movement of the upright marker (12) with respect to the base (10) such that breakage at the uppermost portions of the angle iron sections (16) and ( 18) is prevented.

  • Patent number: 4637492
Abstract: A latch mechanism for attaching accessories such as boarding ladders, ski tow bars and lights to a small boat. A latch plate is secured to the boat and carries a socket having an internal annular rib. A tube projecting from the accessory carries a pair of opposed latch elements each having an enlarged head extending out of the tube. A U-shaped spring wire urges the latch elements apart toward a latching position in which the heads of the elements securely interlock with the rib when the tube is fully inserted in the socket. Cam surfaces on the latch heads interact with the rib to displace the heads so that they can pass the rib as the tube is being inserted. Each latch element has a release button which extends through the side of the tube. When the buttons are depressed, the latch elements are released from the rib to permit the tube to be withdrawn from the socket.

A method of forming the manifold is also disclosed in which the inserts are respectively positioned on a plurality of longitudinally spaced upstanding pins on a lower mold half to locate the inserts within the mold during the molding process.
