Abstract: An apparatus for maintaining valve element/valve seat alignment in valve assemblies employing trunnion mounted valve elements, the apparatus including a shaft or trunnion attached to the valve element and provided with an axially extending bore which receives an expandable plug, axially fixed relative to the shaft, there being means provided to laterally expand the plug to effect frictional engagement between the plug and the bore of the shaft.
Abstract: A conical sleeve with a male screw thread for fixing a length of tube as a handle to a broom head has inner ridges sloping towards the axis of the sleeve as they get nearer the narrower end of the sleeve. On driving the length of tube into the sleeve, grooves are folded inwards by the ridges. At their ends nearest the narrower end of the sleeve, the ridges have radial faces, over which the end of the tube is bent and splayed for producing a strong locking action and stopping any twisting of the tube in relation to the sleeve.
Abstract: To permit acceptance of diametrically directed clamping forces of a double-acting hub-to-shaft clamping connection in which an inner ring is formed with outer conical surfaces, an outer ring formed with inner conical surfaces, and clamping or compression rings with matching conical surfaces are positioned between the conical surfaces of the inner and outer ring, a circumferentially continuous cylindrical metal ring is provided formed with a circumferential groove fitted either over (FIG. 2) the outer ring, or within (FIG. 3) the inner ring to permit application of the structure over a stub hub, or within a hollow blind recess or bore (FIG. 3) of the shaft (5).
Abstract: A cable dead end, and method of dead end formation, that can be readily utilized in the field with a minimum of equipment and components, yet providing a durable, tight, dead end. The cable end is cut off and a ferrule is slipped over the cable end onto the cable. The strands at the end of the cable are unwound and separated, an insert is disposed over the core strand and is disposed within a general bird-cage configuration of the cable strands at the cable end. The ferrule is then moved over the bird-cage configuration and to the end of the cable, and the void space inside the ferrule between the strands, ferrule, and insert is packed with steel wool. Then an anerobic, structural, single component adhesive (e.g. an oxygenated methacrylic) is poured into the ferrule interior volume, and quickly cures. Preferably the insert is barbed, and the interior cross-section of the ferrule is elliptical.
Abstract: A rotary ball valve comprises a housing formed of plastic material, the housing including a through passage. A plug formed of a plastic material is rotatably mounted in the housing and includes a ball-shaped gate having a passage which is alignable with the housing passage when the plug is open. A stem projects laterally of the housing passage to enable the plug to be manually rotated. A pair of seating rings formed of an anti-friction material encircle respective ends of the gate passage when the plug is open. The housing includes a pair of annular flanges disposed on opposite sides of the plug passage. Each flange contacts a back side of a respective one of the seating rings. Each flange is notched around its periphery to form a plurality of circumferentially spaced flange segments whose inner diameter is substantially the same as the diameter of the gate passage.
Abstract: There is disclosed a slip clutch useful for the fixed adjustability of an indexed knob on a control shaft of a device such as thermostatically controlled gas valve for a water heater. The clutch comprises the assembly of a shaft with a reduced end portion to provide an annular distal shoulder, a ring received over the end and having a radial tab, a spring washer also received over the end of the shaft and resiliently biasing the ring against the annular shoulder and an outwardly flared end of the shaft to secure the assembly. The end of the shaft is hollow form and has internal wrench flats so that the shaft can be immobilized and the ring rotated about the shaft. The control knob is received over the ring and has a radial slot which receives the radial tab.
Abstract: A lug-and-hole connection between a first, lug-bearing sheet metal element and a second, apertured sheet metal element is made by so forming the hole in the first element that it is bounded by out-turned, opposite, convergent wall portions spaced apart, at the narrowest distance between them, by a distance slightly less than the lug thickness. The hole is made without removing material from the first element, as by forcing through it the wedge-shaped tip of a chisel-like punch while backing that element with a flat-topped die having cylindrical cavity. After the lug is inserted into the hole, a tip portion of the lug, which projects beyond the wall portions, is swaged to form it into a rivet-like head that snugly overlies the outer edges of the wall portions, but the wall portions are not reworked in the head forming operation.
Abstract: An improved cable terminal structure is disclosed which comprises the combination of a tapered bushing receiving the outside surface of the belled-out cable strands and a tapered screw placed centrally of the strand mass so as to engage the strands solidly with the bushing. When two such combined structures are coupled together with the aid of an appropriate ferrule, the problem of splicing two cable section can also be solved, that which cannot be made with the conventional cable terminals.
Abstract: In a tongue and groove joints the base of the groove is provided with one or more protuberances to space the tongue from the base of the groove. If the members forming the joint are such that they swell when moist the protuberances are made to be deformable to permit the members to swell without deforming the structure made from the members.

Abstract: A coil assembly structure having an improved terminal arrangement whereby the coil electrical terminals are effectively positively maintained in association with the coil bobbin. The terminal includes a portion received in a recess in the bobbin. A spreader element is provided in the recess for urging a biting portion of the terminal into the sidewall of the recess to provide effectively positive maintained association of the terminal with the coil bobbin for improved subsequent electrical connection and encapsulation.

Abstract: A joint is formed by pushing a grooved tenon into a dovetail-shaped mortise containing a barbed wedge such that the wedge is forced into the tenon groove, thereby spreading the tenon to the dovetail shape of the mortise and anchoring the barbs into the tenon, thus securing the joint and preventing the tenon and mortise from separating.
Abstract: A device to facilitate the connection of a relatively small diameter hose to a larger diameter pipe has a tubular plug-like configuration with a flared portion at one end and a cylindrical portion at the other end. With the cylindrical portion placed within the end of the hose, both the device and the hose are inserted through a side opening in the pipe. When inside the pipe the hose is pushed further onto the flared end portion of the device so that the hose is stretched to a diameter larger than the opening. Tension on the hose causes it to lodge tightly in the opening and form a permanent connection.
Abstract: A unitary tubular fitting body and cooperating mandrel for installation on a blind wall. The body includes an axially collapsible tube portion which during installation draws up the body into alignment with the wall. The body includes a frangible ring dimensioned to fail after adequate compression force is applied on the collapsing tube portion for full sealing engagement with the wall. Failure of the ring releases the mandrel and prevents overtightening of the fitting.BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTIONThe invention relates to a tubular fitting and method for its installation, and, more specifically, to a fitting and method particularly suited for use where access to only one side of a wall is available.PRIOR ARTIt is often desirable to mechanically secure a tubular fitting in fluid-tight relation to a hole in an otherwise imperforate wall to provide communication between zones on opposite sides of the wall.
