Abstract: A pin clamp particularly adapted for use in an external skeletal fixation device to clamp pins inserted in the distal segment and/or proximal segment of a fractured bone for positioning and immobilizing the bone segments to reduce the fracture. The pin clamp employs a wedge lock construction including a block having a tapered, hollow interior which receives a wedge element having opposed, tapered sidewalls connected to a slotted top wall. The pins are inserted between the sidewalls of the wedge element into the slot, and are clamped therebetween as the wedge element is moved into the block. A screw carried by the block threads into a bore in the top wall of the wedge element to move the wedge element in and out of the block. Both the block and wedge element are formed of a composite material and the sidewalls of the wedge element which contact the pins are preferably coated with a grit material having a high coefficient of friction.

Abstract: The pinion gear of a gear pump is press fit onto the end portion of the drive shaft of the pump and is positively captivated on the shaft by a key and by a hot upsetting process, the latter resulting in the formation of axially protruding burrs on the end face of the shaft. When the drive shaft is rammed forwardly with significant force, the burrs tend to embed in an end plate disposed in opposing relation with the shaft. To prevent the burrs from embedding in the end plate and locking the shaft against rotation, the end plate is formed with a recess which receives the burrs with substantial axial clearance when the shaft is rammed forwardly against the end plate.

Abstract: A stud assembly produced by holding in fixed position a head portion having a gripping surface extending from a base. A deformable washer is then extended over the base. A stud member is provided with a receptacle end portion and positioned with respect to the base of the head so that interengaging and cooperating surfaces on the receptacle and base are aligned and provide locking apertures for receiving the washer. Finally, the washer is deformed so that it extends into the locking apertures thereby locking the stud member to the head and forming a unitary stud assembly.
