  • Patent number: 6368242
Abstract: The drive axles of a motor vehicle differential assembly are secured within the central bores provided in the side gears of the differential assembly by a pair of arcuate retaining element having a rounded cross section which preferably is a piece of bar stock bent to define a 180° half-ring element that is securely held between an arcuate groove formed along the circumference of the axle and a rounded abutment surface provided on the side gear. The arcuate groove and rounded abutment surface reduce stress risers and eliminate the counterbore typically provided in the side gear. Moreover, the pair of retaining elements maximizes the frictional contact by circumscribing the axle by approximately 360°.

  • Patent number: 6348002
Abstract: A slip yoke assembly includes a slip yoke having a barrel portion extending from a first end to a second end and a lug portion extending from the first end thereof. The barrel portion has a bore extending from the first end to the second end. The bore has a splined inner surface. The slip yoke assembly also includes a plug having a flange portion. The flange portion is attached to the first end of the barrel portion of the slip yoke. The plug also has a body portion which extends from the flange portion a predetermined distance into the bore. The slip yoke assembly also includes a shaft having an end portion disposed inside the bore of the slip yoke. The end portion includes an end which abuts the body portion of the plug. The end portion of the shaft has a splined outer surface which cooperates with the splined inner surface of the slip yoke bore to provide a rotatable connection between the shaft and the slip yoke while allowing a limited amount of relative axial movement therebetween.

  • Patent number: 6267528
Abstract: A coupling structure of a variable length shaft, comprises a pipe member having an end formed with a plurality of slits elongated in the axial direction to be capable of expanding and diminishing in diameter, an intermediate shaft spline-fitted in the end of the pipe member, and a ring member fitted on an outer periphery of the end of the pipe member, the intermediate shaft being fastened by the end of the pipe member. A holder is releasably attached to an end of the ring member to expand a diameter thereof and thereby reduce a slide frictional resistance of the pipe member against the intermediate shaft. When the holder is released, the ring member diminishes in diameter, and a fastening force of the pipe member on the intermediate shaft is increased.

  • Patent number: 6260437
Abstract: A steering wheel attachment assembly and a method of assembling the steering wheel attachment to a steering wheel shaft is presented. More particularly, a back mounting plate for attachment to a steering wheel module. The back mounting plate includes a through which extends from a first side of the back mounting plate to a center opening. Integrally formed within the back mounting plate is a hub which is disposed in the center opening. The hub includes an opening formed in the center thereof which receives one end of the steering wheel shaft. The hub further includes a side bore and trough combination permit an assembler to gain access to the steering shaft disposed within the hub opening. The steering wheel shaft is securely but removably coupled to the back mounting plate by an interface lock and a taper lock with the hub.

  • Patent number: 6257798
Abstract: A slip joint assembly provides radial clearance compensation between a slip joint yoke and a receiving member. The slip joint yoke has a plurality of male splines formed externally thereon. The receiving member receives the splined yoke therein and has female splines which mate with the male splines of the yoke. The receiving member also has a plurality of circumferentially distributed, longitudinally extending, axis-parallel openings formed therein. The slip joint assembly further includes an elongated member having a C-shaped cross-section. The elongated member is compressibly received within each of the plurality of longitudinally extending openings and engages the splined shaft for providing a radial force between the splined shaft and the receiving member. This elongated member is preferably formed of a spring material to allow it to be compressible.

  • Publication number: 20010002966
Abstract: An expansion shaft includes a first and a second shaft section aligned on the same axis. The second shaft section is inserted in a fit hole of the first shaft section while both the shaft sections are interconnected via a spline or serration. A resilient member is provided which possesses a single snap ring of C-shape fitted on a thin shaft portion of the second shaft section. An arm is axially extended from the snap ring. The arm resiliently presses against an inner circumferential surface of the fit hole for preventing the shaft sections from radially vibrating relative to each other.

  • Patent number: 6238133
Abstract: An anti-rotation mounting mechanism is provided between an indexable insert and an insert-receiving pocket in the body of a machine tool, such as a milling cutter. The mechanism includes a plurality of curved stop surfaces uniformly disposed around the side surface of the insert, a portion of which is obliquely oriented with respect to the side surface of the insert, and at least one anti-rotation surface in the pocket of the tool body having a shape substantially complementary to that of the stop surfaces for forming an interference joint between the pocket and the insert. Both the stop surfaces and the anti-rotation surface are substantially defined by partial radius curves such that either a broad, line-type or lenticular contact between the anti-rotation surface and the obliquely oriented portion of one of the stop surfaces is achieved. The mechanism effectively prevents rotation between the insert and pocket without the formation of point-type, localized stresses which can chip or break the insert.
