Enlarged Head In Complementary Recess, E.g., Dovetail, Etc. Patents (Class 403/381)
  • Patent number: 4867598
Abstract: A tapered dovetail mortise and tenon joint is formed within typically a post and beam or within two joists which intersect perpendicular to each other. The tapered dovetail shaped mortise portion cavity is shaped to interfit with a dovetail shaped tenon portion. The tenon portion has incorporated therein a plurality of acute angles which permit easy assembly, cause precise alignment and cause forces to be created when components are connected using the joint which forces tend to bring the mated components into very rigid tightly interfitted assembled relationship. The joint, when assembled, is not visible because of the unique configuration of the mortise and tenon portions. A very large load bearing capability of inherent in the joint partly because of the large mating surface incorporated into the side surfaces and the bottom surfaces and also partly becuase the integrity of the chords and the web of the "I-Beam" cross section of the components is not violated.

  • Patent number: 4832540
Abstract: A reconditioned tool comprises a cylindrical insert cut from a damaged tool, such as a hog mill, with a milling face formed on one end and a transverse dovetail tenon cut in the other end. The dovetail tenon engages a transverse dovetail mortise in the end face of a cylindrical holder. A transverse slot in the holder splits the end of the holder into two axially extending end sections each of which includes one-half of the dovetail mortise. A clamping device, such as a bolt, draws the two end sections of the holder together to pull the insert firmly against the end faceof the holder through wedging action of the two halves of the dovetail mortise against the dovetail tenon. A locking pin inserted through aligned transverse grooves in the holder and insert prevents a lateral displacement of the insert relative to the holder.

  • Patent number: 4815242
Abstract: A prefabricated post and beam lean-to or free standing structure, incorporating a self-aligning, load bearing mortise and tenon joint assembly which results in a mitred joint with no visible hardware when fabricated. The structure is formed from a plurality of post and beams arranged in spaced, parallel, vertical and inclined. Attitudes extending from a lower support surface at the base of the post, with the inclined beams attaching at a higher support surface. The prefabricated sloping mortise in the post allows the beam's prefabricated tenons to be modified, on site, to descend further into the sloping mortise channel enabling the slope to be adjusted. This frame system then supports single or double glass or other sheets of material for lateral support over the enclosure.

  • Patent number: 4685368
Abstract: The invention provides a disconnectable band saw joint assembly for connecting together in axial alignment end portions of a bandsaw. The joint assembly does not require welding, and as such can be easily separated to permit threading of the bandsaw through a hole drilled in a plate to permit sawing of a closed ended cut or loop within the plate. This eliminates the normal practice of breaking and rewelding a band saw for cutting a closed loop within a plate. Furthermore, because the joint is cold, it does not affect temper of the saw portions adjacent the joint. The assembly has male and female connections, the female connections having a neck recess and a head recess, and the male connection having a head portion and a neck portion which fit within the neck recess and the head recess respectively. The recess has at least one main recess edge, and the head portion has at least one main head edge, both edges being disposed normally to longitudinal axis of the saw.

  • Patent number: 4610563
Abstract: A dowel for assembling furniture parts comprises parts (3, 4) adapted to engage by snap action adjacent parts of another dowel. To facilitate the handling of such dowels the engaging parts (3, 4) are placed together in the same end of the individual dowel and constructed to engage separately corresponding parts of another dowel. One part (3) has the form of a protruding part, whereas the other part (4) has the form of a receiving part. The insertion of the protruding part (3) in a receiving part (4) is facilitated by a slit (24) which makes the protruding part yield. The protruding part (3) and the receiving part (4) may be formed in connection with plane surfaces (5 and 6) forming an angle of 90.degree. with each other, so that dowels of the type described can be used for assembling furniture parts abutting each other perpendicularly, in an angle joint as well as in T-joints and cross joints.

Abstract: A docking system for space modules includes a docking device having respective male and female coupling members carried by the two space modules. The coupling members are arranged to allow, after they have been brought into their coupled condition, relative rotation of the two modules about the axis of the docking device. The system further includes a plurality of connecting devices arranged to lock the two space modules in a precise relative position after the male and female members of the docking device have been brought into their coupled condition. Each of the said connecting devices comprises a coupling seat located in one of the two modules and a coupling shank carried by the other module and axially movable between a withdrawn inoperative position and an extended coupling position. This coupling shank has a head which is expandible within the said coupling seat to effect the connection between the two modules.

Abstract: A pile splice includes two splice plates, each having a dove-tail shaped groove aligned with the groove in the abutting plate. Slip cams are disposed in the channel, defined by the grooves, for outward movement to draw the plates together. Drive wedges are driven between the slip cams to drive them outwardly to draw and hold the plates together and to form a massive, strong pile splice. Wedge forces are distributed to increase clamping forces. Headed reinforcing bars are securely held in the splice plates by plastic bushings to facilitate splice plate alignment and pile casting. Methods are provided.

  • Patent number: 4586364
Abstract: A transfer system for forging machines or the like is disclosed in which a transfer assembly is cantilever-mounted on a powered support for easy removal and replacement, e.g., to provide access to the forging machine dies. Mounting means including mating surfaces on the support and the transfer assembly, which, when engaged, position the transfer assembly with respect to the support. Such surfaces are contained in at least three mutually perpendicular planes. A wedge operated by a piston and cylinder actuator operates in one position to lock the transfer assembly on the support and, when retracted, permits removal of the transfer assembly by vertical movement. The mounting means is arranged to provide locating surfaces and cam surfaces which assist the operator in guiding the transfer assembly to its mounted position.

Abstract: A body frame of a small-sized vehicle such as a motorcycle or the like is assembled by interconnecting a plurality of frame elements. Among at least one pair of the frame elements, a connecting portion of one frame element is fitted into a connecting portion of the other frame element, and the respective connecting portions are firmly connected with each other by means of an adhesive agent. Moreover, the cross-section shapes of the both connecting portions are made non-circular, that is, not a simple circular shape, and thereby the interconnecting structure is very strong and rigid against a torsional force exerted thereupon.
