  • Patent number: 6325566
Abstract: A load-sensing, multi-axis connector is disclosed which comprises a series of complimentary leaf springs, which are connected by load cells through spherical bearings. These leaf springs resist the axial displacement of their attached load cells, but are isolated from non-axial displacements and moments due to the spherical bearings. These leaf springs are attached to a first end connector and a second end connector, which are in turn attached to the two objects that are to be connected. Using the load-sensing, multi-axis connector, two objects can be connected, even where the two objects are undergoing high displacements, and the stresses caused by the relative displacement of the two objects can be monitored.

  • Patent number: 5946186
Abstract: A latch apparatus for a docking station includes a first member connected to a pivot connection on a base portion of the docking station and a second member connected to the first member. The second member is substantially curved so as to form a mechanical moment. A third member is connected to the second member and to a lever. the latch apparatus is operable to decrease an initial rest angle between the first member and the base portion of the docking station and thereby substantially reduce lateral friction forces which develop when the base portion of the docking station is moving laterally. The latch apparatus is further provides mechanical advantage via the mechanical moment which decreases the amount of force required to be applied to the lever to accomplish a given amount of work.

  • Patent number: 5921697
Abstract: A latch apparatus and attachment system for a docking station, with improved ease of closure and a connection lock capability, includes multiple connected latch members; a first of which is connected to a moveable base portion of the docking station; a second of which is substantially curved to form a mechanical moment; and a third of which is connected to a lever separate from the base portion. The multiple member latch apparatus and attachment system decreases an initial rest angle between the first member and the base portion of the docking station, which reduces lateral friction forces as the base portion of the docking station moves laterally. The curved member of the latch apparatus and attachment system improves efficiency of operation via the mechanical moment which decreases an amount of necessary force applied to the lever to accomplish a given amount of work.

  • Patent number: 5742475
Abstract: A casing for computer equipment, the casing comprising first and second leaves for mounting the computer equipment, the leaves being hinged together so as to be movable between a folded position in which the first leaf overlies the second, and an open position; and a base to which the leaves are movably secured so as to allow the second leaf to slide relative to the base. In the open position of the leaves part of the base extends under the first leaf so as to provide a support to resist tipping movement when pressure is applied to the first leaf.

  • Patent number: 4955741
Abstract: A universal joint includes a pair of yokes each having two trunnions projecting radially thereof, and an annular intermediate ring having bearings arranged on two diametrical lines thereof intersecting each other at right angles for supporting the respective trunnions. An annular central cover having a spherical outer surface is fixedly intimately fitted around the intermediate ring. Between the ring and a connecting flange at the outer end of each yoke, a collar is formed on the yoke. A pair of annular side covers each having a spherical inner surface slidable in contact with the spherical outer surface of the central cover each have an outer end portion horizontal in section and fixed to the periphery of the collar. An annular seal member in intimate contact with the outer surface of the central cover is provided at the inner end portion of each side cover. A clearance required for the sliding movement of the side covers is formed between the inner ends of the side covers.

  • Patent number: 4124136
Abstract: Structural front and rear frames, and a rear bulkhead mounted on the rear frame, mount and securely retain a flexible bag as a liner within a freight container, truck trailer or the like, to adapt the container for bulk cargo transport. The front frame retains the front end of the liner bag in generally rectangular configuration and transmits stresses on the bag to structural members of the container, thus supporting the front end of the bag against displacement and possible damage or rupture. The rear frame and a curved bulkhead mounted thereon support the rear end of the bag and similarly prevent its rupture or collapse during loading and tilt-unloading. The laterally curved rear bulkhead also acts as a funnel to completely evacuate the bag contents during tilt-unloading through an opening therethrough. The arrangement is inexpensive and easy to install and, although all of its components may be disposed of after a single use, at least the frame components can be reused.

  • Patent number: 4019329
Abstract: This invention relates to a trench shoring assembly which includes a pair of spaced-apart side walls for vertical disposition within a trench. Spreader pipes and spreader collars interconnect the side walls and allow limited pivotal movement between the side walls. Each side wall includes outer and inner metal plates connected to a horizontally extending hollow top beam which extends longitudinally along the top of the side wall, two intermediate beams parallel the hollow metal beam and a bottom beam. A hardwood insert is disposed within the top beam to prevent the collapse of the hollow metal beam. A number of hollow beams extend perpendicularly to the horizontal beams and ribbed members extend perpendicularly to the horizontal beams. The side walls of the assembly have a tapered bottom portion which defines a triangularly shaped pointed lower extremity extending between the ends of the bottom portion.
