Abstract: A fiberglass manhole adjustment ring comprising a fiberglass pipe and a self-centering lip attached to the edge of the pipe, and a method for installing the fiberglass manhole adjustment ring in an existing fiberglass manhole. The self-centering lip can either be attached to the interior edge of the pipe to form a sleeve or to the exterior edge of the pipe to form a collar. An interior self-centering lip, or sleeve, slides into an adjoining fiberglass manhole section while an exterior self-centering lip, or collar, slides over an adjoining manhole section. The manhole adjustment ring is inserted between the cone section and barrel section of an existing fiberglass manhole to accommodate changes in elevation of the surrounding grade level. The self-centering lip may also be used on manhole sections to enable field assembly of a manhole.

  • Patent number: 6161985
Abstract: Embodiments of apparatus and a method of raising a manhole ring during construction or repair of roads are shown and described. The apparatus and method include formation of a manhole collar by use of a form that rests on a manhole cone and trimming the form to have its top edge at the correct elevation and orientation to properly receive the manhole ring. After the manhole ring is received on the form, a single monolithic pour of concrete creates a concrete collar that fills and seals the vertical space between the manhole cone and ring and the manhole ring is thus secured and sealed at the proper elevation that results in the manhole ring and its cover being level with the surrounding pavement. The apparatus includes an accurate custom-trimming assembly indexed off of the pavement surface for trimming the form to the proper dimensions for the particular site.

Abstract: Disclosed is a chimney access structure which is particularly well adapted for use in grounds subject to freezing. This structure incorporates chimney provided with an upper end on which is mounted an adaptor provided with a vertical through-hole and with a countersink hole of greater diameter that the through-hole. The countersink hole is preferably frusto-conical and extends coaxially within the through-hole at a given depth from the upper face of the adaptor. This countersink hole defines a sleeve with upper portion of the adaptor which is provided with an inwardly projecting flexible sealing ring. A floating head is slidably mounted into the sleeve. This head has a vertical through-hole coaxial with the one of the adaptor. The floating head also has a lower portion provided with an outer lateral surface whose shape and size are selected to fit into the countersink hole of the adaptor and sealingly slide within the same thanks to the sealing ring.

  • Patent number: 5727351
Abstract: A watertight manhole insert and tether apparatus designed to prevent rainwater from entering sanitary sewer or other systems through a manhole closed by a manhole cover. The manhole insert is located beneath the manhole cover and is connected directly to the manhole by a tether mounted in the manhole, to plug the manhole and prevent theft of the manhole insert. The manhole insert is characterized by a pan-shaped insert body having a flat insert bottom and a pressure-relief valve, one or more lift straps optionally provided with a warning tag, and an upward-standing, sloping or perpendicular side wall fitted with an outwardly-extending top rim for engaging a shoulder shaped in the manhole to support the manhole insert. One end of the flexible stainless steel tether is connected to the manhole wall and the opposite end first extends through a grommet in the insert bottom and subsequently through a lever bar locking device.

  • Patent number: 5634739
Abstract: The present invention provides an improvement in manhole casting positioning apparatus and methods. In particular there is provided a casting positioning apparatus; for positioning a casting in relation to an upper end of a manhole, which comprises an inner sleeve comprising a rigid hollow cylinder having an annular flange extending around the upper circumference thereof. The diameter of the cylinder is less than that of the manhole lid opening. An annular resilient rubber ring or skirt whose inner diameter is slightly less than the outer diameter of the inner sleeve and whose outer diameter is greater than that of the manhole lid opening is stretched around the outer surface of the cylindrical inner sleeve. The lower end of the cylindrical inner sleeve is inserted into the upper end of the manhole, and lowered until the lower surface of the rubber ring rests on the upper edge of the manhole lid. Pressure is then applied downwardly on the flange of the sleeve to push it down to the desired height and slope.

  • Patent number: 5628152
Abstract: A manhole cover and frame assembly includes an outer frame having a support surface and a side wall that extends upward from the support surface and has a recessed portion. An inner frame is supportable on the support surface. The inner frame has a protrusion extending from the outer peripheral surface. The inner frame also includes an adjustable joint for adjusting the inner frame in its peripheral dimensions to expand to engage the protrusion with the recessed portion, thereby preventing upward movement of the inner frame, and to contract to remove the protrusion from the recessed portion. The inner frame also includes a cover support surface. A manhole cover is supportable on the cover support surface.

Abstract: A frame insert for raising the level of a drainage grate cover with respect to a catch basin frame. The frame insert includes a lug for providing a locking surface for a lock device connected to the grate cover. The lug permits a pre-existing lock which locked the grate cover to the catch basin frame to be used to lock the grate cover to the frame insert. The lock engages the frame insert lug at a new lock position which is approximately ninety degrees from the position where it locked the grate cover to the frame before installation of the insert.

  • Patent number: 5595455
Abstract: A resilient annular transition collar is provided for roadway structures, including manholes and catch basins, which acts as a flexible transition between the rigid structure or frame of the manhole and the semi-rigid structure of the asphalt paving. The resilient transition collar absorbs any movement of the pavement during expansion and contraction and this absorption avoids the prior art problems of break-up, cracking and separation between manhole and pavement. Risers or adjusting rings may be employed in conjunction with the transition collar to ensure a flush fit between the pavement surface and the upper surface of the transition collar. A mold structure for forming the collars includes heat transfer studs to provide an increased production rate.

  • Patent number: 5564855
Abstract: A stackable height adjustment ring for supporting a manhole cover frame upon a concrete manhole shaft liner has a ring body that is formed from plastic resin, e.g., scrap plastic. The ring includes inner and outer radially spaced apart side walls and optionally a top wall. Brace arms which are integral with the walls preferably extend radially between the walls for holding them together. The rings have alignment members, e.g., an inner wall of the ring can have an upwardly facing shoulder upon its upper edge and the outer wall, a downwardly facing shoulder on its lower edge. An upwardly extending cylindrical collar at the top of the outer ring fits the downwardly facing shoulder of an adjacent ring. There is also a downwardly extending collar at the lower edge of the inner ring to fit on the upwardly facing shoulder of a similar inner ring.

  • Patent number: 5536110
Abstract: A transition collar for use in road construction comprises an annular collar member made of elastomeric materials such as rubber. It has a generally planar top surface and a central opening sized to accommodate a rigid frame structure having an access opening formed therein. The collar member has a vertical outer wall that faces the road material, which outer wall has a number of horizontally extending, spaced apart ridges formed thereon. These ridges assist in securing the collar in a road bed. Preferably the uppermost ridge is spaced below the top surface of the collar. The collar can have a number of small bumps distributed over its top surface to improve traction for vehicles. Preferably these bumps have sloping sidewalls extending about their periphery. A cushioning device is used to adjust the position of the frame structure and comprises a flat, elastomeric member with exterior dimensions corresponding to those of the frame structure.
