Providing Expansion Joint Patents (Class 404/74)
  • Patent number: 4260279
Abstract: An improved sealing assembly for sealing the expansion gap between adjacent sections of a structure has elongated elastomeric pads laid end to end along the length of the gap with a groove in at least one of the end surfaces of each pad for containing a flowable sealant. The groove has an inlet port at the top edge of the end surface through which the flowable sealant may be injected, an intermediate sealing portion for housing the sealant to prevent debris and liquid from passing between the end faces, and a vent portion communicating between the intermediate sealing portion and the top edge of the end surface, so that sealant emerging from the top of the vent portion will indicate that the intermediate sealing portion has been filled.

  • Patent number: 4194282
Abstract: Gaps or seams between adjacent modular refractory fiber blanket insulation modules are filled by inserting therein strips of refractory fiber blanket. The strips are bent into a U-shape over a blade or plate and then inserted between two spreader members, called lubricators, to overcome the tendency of the blanket in the strip to adhere to the blanket in the module.

  • Patent number: 4191489
Abstract: In order to improve load tranfers between concrete slabs in zones at which joints are provided between said slabs, an elongated connection member, formed in one piece is fitted in the joint over at least part of the height of the slabs, which connection member is substantially cylindrical, adapted to be deformed over its entire length by compression or by expansion in at least one direction of deformation perpendicular to its axis. The connection member is placed astride the location of the joint with its axis situated substantially in the plane of the joint. The opposite portions, located on either sides of the plane of the joint, of the peripheral surface of the connection member are adhesively connected to the surfaces of the slabs with which they are in contact so as to prevent any relative movement between the contacting portions of the connection member and of the slabs.

  • Patent number: 4171849
Abstract: An apparatus for removing sealants from expansion joints in pavement slabs preparatory to replacement of the sealant is adapted for demountable attachment to the rear of a motorized vehicle. The apparatus includes a frame which is pivotably movable about a horizontal axis by means of a linear actuator. A carriage, having a cutting tool bit carried in a tool holder at the trailing edge thereof, is supported on the frame so as to be pivotably movable therewith with such movement employed for positioning and holding the cutting tool in the joint being cleaned. The carriage is free to laterally slide relative to the frame for freely tracking the expansion joint being cleaned.

  • Patent number: 4127352
Abstract: A system of placing and supporting elongated control joint strips, headers and the like preparatory to the pouring of a concrete slab, using elongated strips having V-shaped longitudinal bends, and spaced socket members defining non-circular sockets, in combination with stakes on non-circular cross section having two different effective transverse dimensions. The preferred stakes are of oval or elliptical cross section, with longitudinally spaced ring-like ribs on the shorter sides, and the preferred socket members are either integral U-shaped straps lanced from the strips, or separately formed brackets fitted onto the strips and having means defining non-circular sockets alongside the strips.

  • Patent number: 4084912
Abstract: A method and gap sealing assembly for sealing adjacent roadway slabs at the gap. Gap sealing members bridging the gap are positioned in end-to-end array. A resistance heater is positioned adjacent elastomeric end surfaces of the members and a rubber-like heat activatable bonding agent is positioned between the end surfaces. When the heater is energized, the end surfaces are bonded to each other to form a seal in situ.

  • Patent number: 4080088
Abstract: The disclosure relates to a joint-edge element for expansion joints in roadways wherein the anchoring parts, that extend in the longitudinal direction of the joint, just as the remaining parts of the joint-edge profiled element, are joined in one piece to the joint-edge element. At least one profiled part of the joint-edge element is produced by dividing the double profiled element in two profiled halves. Joint-edge elements having the double length of the particular extrusion casting or rolled element are produced through a single operation of extrusion or rolling.A particularly expedient embodiment is produced in such a manner that the anchoring parts are formed by parting a connecting portion of the double profiled element. The parting operation can be performed without considering the precision of manufacture, with relatively low expenditure.

  • Patent number: 4033702
Abstract: An assembly for sealing the intersection of curb and gutter portions of adjacent roadway slabs, including side pads joined by an upstanding joint membrane and a sealing flap extending away from them. The sealing flap is more flexible than the joint membrane, but has a relatively rigid zone positioned to promote folding of the flap between the side pads and below the joint membrane when the side pads are secured to the curb portions. The folding takes place without bunching and wrinkling to provide a smooth and neat transition from the curb to the gutter portions to promote effective sealing. A method of installing that assembly is also disclosed.
