The fender is of extruded construction, having laterally extending flanges which are conformable to the surface of the pilings. The fender is attached to the piling by lag screws applied to the flanges. Special washers, of rectangular configuration, are provided to underlie the heads of the lag screws. The washers are formed with anti-rotation means such that, after initial proper alignment of the washers with the fender flanges, the washers will retain such orientation during rotational tightening of the lag screws. In one form, the anti-rotation means comprises bent corners of individual washers. In another form, the washers are of a length to engage more than one lag screw.Type: GrantFiled: July 31, 2002Date of Patent: February 3, 2004Assignee: Pawling CorporationInventor: Robert B. Busby

Publication number: 20040018060Abstract: A protection apparatus protects a harbor or an area in a body of water or adjacent to a body of water. The protection apparatus floats on the body of water, and includes a plurality of barrier units positioned side-by-side, each of the barrier units includes a composite-based durable barrier structure. The barrier structure is configured to hold a net in place in order to protect an area in the body of water or abutting the body of water from waterborne craft. The protection apparatus also includes connectors respectively provided between adjacently-positioned ones of the barrier units. Each of the connectors includes a tensile member and a dampening member for handling forces applied to the protection barrier and for maintaining the integrity of the protection barrier.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 18, 2003Publication date: January 29, 2004Applicant: ITA INDUSTRIALInventors: Erick B. Patent number: 6572307Abstract: A fender for absorbing the impact of a vessel is provided, which is formed of rubber and fixed to a fixing surface of a dock and adapted to have an impact receiving plate secured to a distal end of a body of the fender. The fender comprises a first bumper member having an elongated hollow cylindrical body of a constant outside diameter and affixed to the impact receiving plate at one end, and a second bumper member connected at one end to an opposite end of the cylindrical body of the first bumper member. The second bumper member at the opposite end thereof is fixed to the fixing surface at a portion having a hollow conical body with its distal end being greater in outside diameter than its closest end, and the second bumper member buckling radially outwardly upon receiving a compressive force from the vessel thereby absorbing the impact of the vessel; and a shoulder formed along an outer periphery of a connection portion between the first and second bumper members.Type: GrantFiled: December 20, 2000Date of Patent: June 3, 2003Assignee: Sumitomo Rubber Industries, Ltd.Inventors: Kei Tajima, Yasufumi Kozono, Akira Kamigoro

Patent number: 6540442Abstract: An energy-absorbing “smart” bumper system features a variably controllable valve which is responsive to impact conditions. The initially closed valve opens upon maximization of the pressure reading upon the bumper, and maintains the same open setting (in other words, the same valve area) during such period of pressure maximization. During the succeeding period of pressure declination from maximum, the valve undergoes ongoing adjustment of its open setting (in other words, ongoing adjustment of its valve area) so that the reaction force of the bumper remains constant. The valve closes (in other words, the valve area becomes zero) when the pressure falls abruptly toward zero (an occurrence which correlates with a similar plummet in reaction force, as well as with near or approximate motionlessness of the impacting body), thereby avoiding or curtailing an unwanted rebound effect.Type: GrantFiled: August 31, 2001Date of Patent: April 1, 2003Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the NavyInventors: Kerry T. Publication number: 20030049078Abstract: Flexible brackets or “wings” molded from marine grade, UV resistant PVC allow attachment of inflatable boat fenders to any piling or dock structure regardless of shape or size. Adjustable straps are used to encompass the fender and fasten it to the “wings” allowing use of any size fender from six to twelve inches in diameter. A short section of line is used to secure the fenders, when used vertically, to an eye screw fastened to the piling or structure in a location above the fenders where the line can pass through the central opening in the fenders and tie in a large knot at the bottom of the fenders. Installation using simple hand tools is easy and can be accomplished by the average person in approximately one half an hour.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 30, 2002Publication date: March 13, 2003Inventor: Thomas M. Patent number: 6309140Abstract: The lock and dam system for waterway includes a dam extending across the waterway, the channel having a first entry-exit opening on a first side of the dam and a second entry-exit opening on the second side of the dam. The channel includes a lock. The system further includes a fascia approximate first entry-exit opening in the channel, and a fender system to protect the fascia from impact with objects generally moving in a first direction. The system includes a first panel, a second panel, a first support element coupled to one of the first and second panels and coupled to the at least one fascia and a second support element coupled to one of the first and second panels and coupled to the at least one fascia. The first support element extends oblique to said one of the first and second support panels with the second support element extends oblique to said one of the first and second panel.Type: GrantFiled: September 28, 1999Date of Patent: October 30, 2001Assignee: Svedala Industries, Inc.Inventors: Edward Kiedaisch, Michael J. Patent number: 6289836Abstract: A marine fender for securely affixing to an object such as a dock, piling, seawall, and the like is formed by extrusion of a resilient material. It is provided with unique energy absorbing properties. The fender has a uniform cross section with an outer arcuate wall, and an inner arcuate wall. Strips connect the two walls to transmit forces from items impinging on the outer wall to the smaller arch of the inner wall. A planar panel connects the two walls and transmits any remaining forces to the object on which the fender is mounted. Flanges coextensive with the outer wall enable the fender to be securely affixed to the object.Type: GrantFiled: June 5, 2000Date of Patent: September 18, 2001Inventor: Michael Tellex
