  • Publication number: 20110116874
Abstract: A pile driving system for driving a pile comprising a support system comprising an arm assembly, an engaging system comprising a primary housing and a secondary housing, a suspension system, a vibratory system, and first and second clamp assemblies. The first clamp assembly rigidly connects the secondary housing to the pile. The second clamp assembly rigidly connects the secondary housing to the pile. The second clamp assembly rigidly connects the secondary housing to the side portion of the pile. The tip portion of the at least one pick member engages at least one sheet pile of a substantially horizontal stack of sheet piles to remove the at least one sheet pile from the stack of sheet piles. The pile driving system drives the pile using at least one of a driving force generated by the support system and a vibrational force generated by the vibratory system.

Abstract: Pile driving apparatus comprises first and second sets of eccentric members mounted in a housing for opposing rotation. A phase shifting arrangement connects the sets of eccentric members for controlling coordinated rotation thereof, and comprises a limiting device between the first and second sets of eccentric members for shifting between a first condition wherein the eccentric members are constrained to rotate out of phase to negate generation of vibration and a second condition wherein the eccentric members are constrained to rotate in phase to generate vibration. Two motors are connected with the limiting device for alternatively driving rotation thereof. A control arrangement selectively drives the limiting device predominantly by the first motor for shifting the limiting device into the first condition thereof for preventing vibration or predominantly by the second motor for shifting the limiting device into the second condition for generating vibration in the housing.

Abstract: The disclosure describes, in part, apparatuses and methods for installing structures (e.g., foundations, footings, anchors, abutments, etc.) at work sites, such as difficult-access work sites. In some instances, a rotating drill assembly is assembled over a target location in order to excavate a radial array of batter-angled shafts associated with the target location in preparation for the installation of a radial array of micropiles. An operator utilizes the rotating drill in combination with a foundation pile schedule/decision matrix to design and install the radial array of batter-angled micropiles. This disclosure also describes techniques for designing, fabricating and installing structural caps to be coupled to the installed radial array batter angled micropiles. These structural caps are lightweight and, thus, more portable to difficult-access sites where they are coupled to the micropiles forming a foundation for structure to be installed at the difficult-access site.

Accordingly, large elements, such as monopiles for wind turbines, which may comprise a steel tube having a diameter in excess of 5 meters, or even tunnel sections, can be installed by utilizing a number of relatively small impact drivers.

Abstract: In one exemplary embodiment, curved sheet pile is driven underneath an existing conduit using a pile driver guided hydraulically by an excavator or other heavy machinery. By vibrating the curved sheet piles, the soil is placed in suspension, which allows the piles to be directed through the soil along an arcuate path that has a curvature that substantially matches the radius of curvature of the piles. Once the pile is positioned as desired, each individual pile sheet can be welded to one another to form a unitary structure. In one exemplary embodiment, the curved sheet pile is inserted beneath a conduit using a vibratory pile driver that rotates about a fixed pivot element on an excavator or other heavy machine for positioning the pile driver to advance the curved sheet pile along a fixed arc.

Abstract: A driven pile anchor suitable for securing a tendon of a tension leg platform to the seafloor is supplemented with added weight. The pile may be a conventional driven friction pile installed with an underwater pile hammer. A load frame is added to the individual pile to accommodate ballast weights. Pre-manufactured ballast weights are placed on the frame to increase the holding power of the pile anchor system. The ballast weights may be secured solely by gravity connections, thereby simplifying their installation. In a second embodiment, the pile is intentionally plugged and installed with the plug intact. Pre-manufactured ballast weights are then placed inside the pile and may be held in place by gravity. In a third embodiment, the pile is a conventional driven friction pile installed with an underwater pile hammer. The pile is initially open but subsequently evacuated and intentionally plugged near its pile tip. Pre-manufactured ballast weights are placed inside the pile to increase its holding capacity.
