  • Patent number: 6682267
Abstract: A piering device includes a shaft having a polygonal cross-section with a series of notches spaced at intervals along the vertices of the shaft. For example, the shaft can have a square cross-section with rounded corners. The helical plate has a passageway with a cross-section to slide along the shaft when the helical plate is in a first rotational position on the shaft. However, notches within the passageway of the helical plate engage the notches on the shaft when the helical plate is rotated to a second rotational position, thereby preventing the helical plate from sliding along the shaft. A key is inserted between the shaft and helical plate to hold the helical plate in the second rotational position and thereby fix the axial position of the helical plate on the shaft.

Abstract: A method and apparatus of re-tightening or retensioning a roof bolt in an underground mine serves the purpose of enabling the operator to place tension between the head of a permanent, epoxy-secured, roof bolt and the roof plate of a standard roof bolt system used to effect primary roof support in an underground mine. The method and apparatus have particular utility in mines in which drawrock or localized crumbling of shale of soft rock material is encountered as the first layer of material in the mine roof. The apparatus consists of a slotted screw member and slotted nut combination. A second embodiment of the apparatus is comprised of a slotted nut, slotted screw member, and one or more slotted spacers to be oriented between the roof bolt head and base plate. The members are turned with the appropriate tightening tool such as to apply pressure between the base plate and roof bolt head, thereby re-tensioning the roof bolt.

  • Patent number: 6561721
Abstract: A cable bolt comprises a cable with a tubular yielding fixture at one of its ends. The pull-off load of such yielding fixture can be adjusted to a desired value. This is achieved by unwinding one end of the cable and inserting a slug over the kingwire. Then, the peripheral wires are wound again over the kingwire forming a bulge in the cable where the slug is located. The yielding fixture is then slid on the cable and forced over the bulged portion of the cable, while measuring the load required to achieve this operation, which also becomes the pull-off load of the yielding fixture. Finally, any part of the cable protruding from the fixture is cut-off to form the cable bolt with the desired yielding fixture at its end.

Abstract: This invention is directed to a method of re-tightening or re-tensioning a roof bolt in an underground mine. Specifically, the method and apparatus claimed herein serves the purpose of enabling the operator to place tension between the head of a permanent, epoxy-secured, roof bolt and the base plate of a standard roof bolt system used to effect primary roof support in an underground mine. The method and apparatus have particular utility in mines in which drawrock or localized crumbling of shale of soft rock material is encountered as the first layer of material in the mine roof. The apparatus consists of a slotted screw member and slotted nut combination. A second embodiment of the apparatus is comprised of a slotted nut, slotted screw member and one or more slotted spacers to be oriented between the roof bolt head and base plate. The members are turned with the appropriate tightening tool such as to apply pressure between the base plate and roof bolt head, thereby re-tensioning the roof bolt.

Abstract: Apparatus, method, and a kit for a yieldable tendon mine support rock anchor include structure and/or steps including the provision of a metal support member having an outside diameter which is less than a diameter of the rock hole. Preferably, resin cartridges are disposed inside the rock hole. A wedge anchor is provided and is disposed at a distal end of the metal support member and has a narrow portion disposed uphole from a wider base portion thereof. The wedge anchor base portion is narrower than the diameter of the rock hole to permit un-solidified resin to pass from downhole to uphole of the wedge anchor base portion. The wedge anchor is dimensioned to crush solidified uphole resin and permit downhole movement of the crushed solidified resin when a yielding tension is applied to the metal support member and the wedge anchor moves uphole.

Abstract: A connection for securing the longitudinal wires of a soil reinforcing mat to a face element for an earthen formation is provided by converging the lead ends of the wires toward one another and forming aligned coils distally on the lead ends. A pin extending through the coils secures the soil-reinforcing mat to the face element for pivotal movement relative thereto in a horizontal plane. A variety of means are provided to secure the coils against unwinding in response to tension force applied to the wires.

Abstract: A connection for securing the longitudinal wires of a soil-reinforcing mat to a face element for an earthen formation is provided by converging the lead ends of the wires toward one another and securing a connecting rod between the ends. The rod is extended into engagement with an anchor on the face element. A variety of means are provided for securing the rod against separation from the anchor. To enable the mat to move in a horizontal plane relative to the face element, the pin may extend in a direction normal to the mat and be rotatably received in a vertically extending opening in the anchor.

Abstract: A stake suitable for use in construction is formed from an elongate threaded metal member, typically of length between 0.45 meter and 1.8 meter, having two ends. A first end region, tapered to a sharp point over typically 3 centimeters, is suitable to be plunged into earth. A middle region has threads that are both deeply cut, typically at a ratio of root diameter to outside diameter less than 0.80, and steeply inclined, typically at least 1 in 20. A second end region has a feature in the shape of a regular prism suitable to be engaged by a torquing tool for rotation of the entire stake. The second end region feature may be a prism of regular cross section, normally a hexagonal prism, of a diameter everywhere less than the minor diameter of the middle region's threads.

Abstract: This invention is directed to an improved method and apparatus for providing secondary roof support in an underground mine such as to reduce the hazard of localized crumbling or deterioration of a mine roof. The apparatus of this invention generally comprises a slightly convex steel plate, crafted to cradle a roof bolt and which is supported by the base plate of the primary roof control system. The invention is made to be utilized with standard primary roof bolt systems. By applying an upward pressure on the roof and effecting a larger coverage area for each roof bolt, the opportunity for drawrock separation to begin is reduced, and the exposure of the elements to drawrock strata in the vicinity of the bolt is eliminated. The method of the present invention includes the step of utilizing the apparatus of the present invention, with convex portion of the lateral plate facing upwards, before the placement of the base plate and roof bolt.

Each tube has a tapered end, an end with a flange, and a slit running the length of the tube. Each bearing plate has a flat base and a central domed section having a central aperture therethrough. In a first embodiment, the tubes of four of the sets are arranged in a first or bottom layer so that the flanged and tapered ends of the tubes are aligned alternatively and the slits face downwardly. Next, the plates of three of the sets are placed along the length of the four tubes so that the domed sections face upwardly, thereby forming a second layer. A third layer is formed by placing the three remaining plates on top of the first three plates, respectively, so that the domed sections of the second layer nest within the respective domed sections of the third layer.
