    Abstract: A ground rod installation device having an auger fixedly mounted on the lower end of an elongated drive shaft. A pilot drill projects downwardly from the lower end of the auger. The shaft, auger, and pilot drill have aligned axial passages into which the ground rod is inserted. A releasable fastener then secures the ground rod in place inside the shaft. The shaft is rotated in one direction, thereby causing the auger to draw the shaft into the ground. After the releasable fastener has released the ground rod from the shaft, the shaft is rotated in the opposite direction, thereby withdrawing the shaft from the ground while allowing the ground rod to fall through the passages in the auger and pilot drill and remain in the ground.

    Abstract: A barrier arrangement for blocking a water passage or channel against the admission of a foreign or unfamiliar object, such as underwater vessels, frogmen and the like. The arrangement comprises a net (1) of considerable tensile strength intended to be stretched across the water passage. The bottom edge of the net (1) is anchored to the sea-bed and the net can be activated from a passive state, in which it may lie on the sea-bed, to an active barrier state. To this end, the upper edge of the net (1) is connected to an inflatable and deflatable lifting hose (3) which when evacuated is essentially flat and which when inflated is able to lift the upper edge of the net towards the surface of the water, so as to stretch the net between the sea-bed and the surface of the water. The invention also relates to a barrier net and to an anchoring means for use with the arrangement.

    Abstract: A prestressed grouted anchor has a portion of an axially extending prestressed tension member grouted in a receiving material while the remaining portion of the tension member extends from the grouted portion. The remaining portion is separated from the grouted portion at a selected breaking point by reducing the tensile strength of the tension member as the result of exposing it to the action of heat, such as developed in an exothermic chemical reaction. If the tension member is prestressed and the resulting elastic elongation is maintained during the heating action with the elongation being greater than the elongation required under the heating action for effecting the severing of the tension member, then with progressive heat the tensile strength of the tension member is reduced and the elastic elongation progressively changes to plastic elongation with the tension member finally severing automatically at the selected breaking point.

    Abstract: A method of feeding cement into a drill hole for cement bolting of a rock, according to which a feeder pipe (2) is pushed into the hole essentially to the bottom of the hole portion to be filled with cement, cement is fed into the hole beginning from the bottom of the hole portion, and the pipe is displaced outwards in the hole when the cement fills the hole. The feeding of cement is stopped and the pipe is removed when the amount of cement is sufficient to fill the gap between the wall of the hole and the rock bolt to be pushed into the hole. The displacement of the pipe is controlled by means of the filling pressure (TP) caused by the cement fed between the pipe tip and the bottom of the hole portion to ensure that the hole is reliably filled despite possible cracks and crushed zones.

The sheets are supported on each side of being joined to support members comprising two rectangular sheets disposed at an angle one to the other each braced to resist out of plane deformation and each having perforated edge flanges extending perpendicularly along the free edges thereof. The overcast can be extended in either length or span by the addition of further sheets and/or support members. In a modification the support members are fitted with telescopically adjustable legs which can yield in response to floor heave or roof pressure to reduce structural damage to the overcast.

The apparatus is provided with guiding means which, as the feeding device is moved along the feed beam, displace the feeding device away from a bolt feeding position coaxial with the axis of the drill hole and return the feeding device back to said feeding position.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for lengthening or shortening a pole supporting lines, such as electric power and telephone lines. The method includes the providing of a stub adapted to be joined in abutting end-to-end relationship with the lower end of the pole to form a lower extension and support for the pole. The pole is raised vertically until its lowermost end portion is clear of the ground so that a lower end portion of the pole can be sized, as necessary, for reception by a mechanism joining the pole and stub. If necessary, the length of the pole is also shortened to provide a desired combined length. After the lower end has been sized, the pole and stub are joined to each other so that they constitute, in effect, a substantially rigid continuation of each other. The pole and stub are then vertically lowered into the ground to a required depth and the ground is consolidated around the base of the stub. The apparatus includes appropriate structure for accomplishing the preceding method.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus is disclosed for a marine production riser system. The system includes a series of housing sections linked to form a vertical riser column. The integrity of the riser column is maintained by guidelines extending in tension between a subsea installation and a surface vessel. Each housing section has a plurality of passages extending therethrough. Fluid-handling lines retained within the passages are isolated from current forces by the housing sections. To utilize the invention, the nonbuoyant housing sections are positioned between the guidelines, are loosely banded to the guidelines, and are lowered to form the riser column. Fluid-handling lines are threaded through axially-coinciding passages located in each housing section and continuous throughout the riser column. The fluid-handling lines are connected at the sea floor and surface vessel to complete a fluid carrying system.

One application is particulary advantageous in underground mine roof bolting using mechanical anchors where a device utilizing the method can be employed to install mine roof bolts at varying initial tensions in such a manner that the bolt tensions found among a population of roof bolts converge to one tension value within one or two hours after installation due to individual differences in tension decay rate. Since roof bolt tension decay bears an exponential relationship to time, variability in bolt tension which develops after mentioned convergence has taken place is small for a long period of time, in marked contrast to a conventional installaton which is characterized by bolt tension variability which grows rapidly into a far wider range immediately after installation.

    Abstract: An apparatus is disclosed for the continuous longitudinal construction for canals. The apparatus performs a series of sequential operations required for the construction of a canal. The apparatus performs planing of the surfaces of the sidewall slopes of the canal and the canal bed followed by a smooth surfacing of the planed surfaces with a suitable planing material.The apparatus during the canal construction adjusts to the angle defined by the opposed sloped walls of the canal and is adapted so that the ground-engaging carriages are held against the sloped walls. In this manner, the heavy bridging structures which, in the prior art, extend from one berm of the canal, across the canal, and to the other berm, are eliminated. In addition, two or more apparatus frames are pivotally connected one behind the other. In this manner, continuous adjusting at the connecting hinge is performed as the canal is constructed according to the varying parameters of the canal.

    Abstract: A method of constructing an in-ground liquid barrier in separate sections with liquid tight joints between the sections. Activation of the system by the dispatcher or operator in the central station, or activation by a miner within a mining location, automatically turns off the power from the load center to the mining equipment in that location.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for lengthening or shortening a pole supporting lines, such as electric power and telephone lines. The method includes the providing of a stub adapted to be joined in abutting end-to-end relationship with the lower end of the pole to form a lower extension and support for the pole. The pole is raised vertically until its lowermost end portion is clear of the ground so that a lower end portion of the pole can be sized, as necessary, for reception by a mechanism joining the pole and stub. If necessary, the length of the pole is also shortened to provide a desired combined length. After the lower end has been sized, the pole and stub are joined to each other so that they constitute, in effect, a substantially rigid continuation of each other. The pole and stub are then vertically lowered into the ground to a required depth and the ground is consolidated around the base of the stub. The apparatus includes appropriate structure for accomplishing the preceding method.
