Abstract: In a cutting tool having an indexable cutting insert with four cutting portions, the cutting insert is securable within a holder portion in four index positions by means of a fastener. The cutting insert has two opposing end surfaces with a peripheral side surface and a central axis extending therebetween, the peripheral side surface having exactly four abutment zones. The insert holder has a holder portion and a body portion, the holder portion having a sidewall surface with a first, second and third reaction zone. The cutting insert is divided into four imaginary quadrants about its central axis and the four abutment zones are located entirely in two of the four imaginary quadrants, and for each index position, three of the four abutment zones are in clamping contact with the three reaction zones.

  • Patent number: 8157487
Abstract: A cutting tool has cartridges in which cutting inserts may be retained. The location of each cartridge is adjustable by a bidirectional adjustment mechanism having an adjustment screw directed in the direction of adjustment. The adjustment screw has a head and a flexible flange with an annular recess therebetween. A protuberance projecting from the cartridge engages the annular recess with an interference fit thereby coupling the adjustment screw to the cartridge. As the adjustment screw is screw rotated about its axis of screw rotation it moves along the axis of screw rotation taking the cartridge with it. Screw rotation of the adjustment screw in opposite senses results in the adjustment of the position of the cartridge in opposite directions. Due to the fact that the protuberance is firmly located in the annular recess of the adjustment screw, play or backlash is eliminated.

Abstract: A cutting insert comprises an elliptical cutting edge. The cutting insert has a mounting hole through which a retention screw may pass, wherein the retention screw makes contact with the mounting hole in a seating plane that is perpendicular to the mounting hole. The cutting insert is adapted for use in a cutting tool comprising a tool body having a pocket partially defined by a floor that is parallel to a seating plane. The insert can have a shape complimentary to a tool body so as to cooperate with the tool body to form a continuous flute. According to one embodiment of the invention, the insert has a flank edge inboard with respect to the tool body. An insert according to another embodiment of the invention has a rake face with a positive cutting geometry.

  • Patent number: 7712492
Abstract: The planing blade axle includes an axle body and blades assembled externally onto the axle body in a predefined pattern. Tapped holes are arranged onto the blade assembly surface of the axle body for assembly of blades. A pyramidal through-hole is placed centrally onto the blade, so that the blades screw securely into the tapped hole via the bolts with pyramidal end blade. An expanded shoulder is additionally placed at a top of the pyramidal through-hole, so that an expanded flange is placed opposite to the pyramidal end of the bolt. When the blade is screwed by the bolt, a definite and solid positioning effect will be achieved if the flange contacts the expanded shoulder of the blade. The present invention efficiently prevents excessive locking and subsequent cracking of the blade, increasing positioning area, leading to prolonged service life and a more stable locking state with improved applicability.

To this end, in an insert tip including bolt holes that cause upper and lower surfaces of a plate shaped body to communicate with each other, the plate shaped body having a cutting edge at each corner portion, the insert tip being fixed to a cutter body by a bolt fitted into the bolt holes, clearance portions are formed at a portion direction toward each corner portion of the insert tip among inner side portions of the bolt holes to prevent interference between the bolt holes and the bolt if the bolt is slantingly fitted from one corner portion of the insert tip, where the insert tip is worked, to its opposite corner portion.
