Patent number: 5044838Abstract: A tool for use with a tool holder has a body to which at least one blade such as a circular saw blade or milling cutter is clamped to prevent the blade from turning when a selected tooth is brought into cutting or grooving contact with a rotating work piece, the body of the tool has first and second parallel clamping surfaces through which a diametric slot opens. A first clamping member has a hub on which a blade is rotatably mounted and which fits the slot and is held thereby against turning. The two clamping members are connected by a threaded member by which the clamping members are drawn towards each other to clamp the blade against the first clamping surface. A member threaded radially through the body extends into the slot and is operable to move the hub radially with respect to the center thereof enabling positions of a tooth relative to the work piece to be precisely established. When more than one blade is mounted on the hub, the blades are held apart by a spacer.Type: GrantFiled: April 26, 1990Date of Patent: September 3, 1991Inventor: Richard A. Brookfield

Patent number: 4697963Abstract: The clamping mechanism and companion cutting insert disclosed are designed for use in a milling cutter intended to be ganged with other like cutters on a common rotational axis for the simultaneous milling of multiple slots or grooves. The axially movable clamp for the on-edge inserts employed in the cutter is operated indirectly by an adjusting screw accessible radially from the outside of the ganged cutter bodies without requiring disassembly of the individual cutters to index or replace the cutting inserts. In each of several clamping mechanisms disclosed, the ultimate clamping element or detent takes the form of an arm which is rocked into engagement with the insert at the site of a blind depression in the face of the insert, being drawn in the axial direction by inward adjustment of a radially accessible adjusting screw, and rockable in the reverse direction by a return spring to release the insert as the adjusting screw is backed off.Type: GrantFiled: January 27, 1986Date of Patent: October 6, 1987Assignee: Ingersoll Cutting Tool CompanyInventor: Edwin Luck

Patent number: 4663818Abstract: A toolholder and insert cartridge are disclosed in which an insert cartridge holds multiple, similarly-shaped inserts in a face-to-face relation in a storage chamber. The insert cartridge has means thereon for dispensing individual inserts one at a time and can be adapted to be held and moved by a robotic arm or a reciprocal moving holder. A toolholder having an insert pocket with a movable insert seat therein is utilized with the insert cartridge. A reciprocably movable drawbar moves the insert seat in the toolholder pocket back and forth so as to clamp and unclamp a cutting insert. When it is signaled to change the insert, the drawbar moves the insert seat out of the insert pocket, thereby unclamping the insert. The insert is then removed from the insert seat and the insert storage cartridge is positioned in proper alignment with the toolholder. The cartridge and toolholder are then engaged so that the insert seat engages the dispensing means on the cartridge unit.Type: GrantFiled: April 16, 1986Date of Patent: May 12, 1987Assignee: Kennametal, Inc.Inventor: Robert A. Patent number: 4487533Abstract: A mount for the mounting of milling tool bits in a recess of a tool bit holder. A screw extends through a bore of the bit and screws into a threaded hole of the holder. A longitudinally slit sleeve is arranged between the screw and the inner wall of the bore of the bit and encompasses the screw. The end of the sleeve opposite the head of the screw rests upon a shoulder of the holder in such manner that when the screw is tightened the screw forces the sleeve into rotation about a rotary axis defined by the point(s) of contact of the sleeve with the shoulder. This rotary axis extends transverse to the screw axis such that an upper end of the sleeve is forced into engagement with the inner wall of the bit bore to secure the bit radially and axially. Replacement or indexing of the bit is permitted in response to minimal unscrewing of the screw, e.g., 90.degree. to 180.degree..Type: GrantFiled: December 9, 1981Date of Patent: December 11, 1984Assignee: Santrade Ltd.Inventor: G/u/ nter Wermeister
