Abstract: An indexable cutting insert has two cutting protrusions extending from opposite end surfaces towards a mid plane. Each cutting protrusion has a rear surface, an oppositely facing rake surface, a relief surface. A main cutting edge is formed at the intersection of the rake and relief surfaces, and extends between two main cutting edge ends. An edge projection is formed by a line connecting longitudinal projections of the main cutting edge ends of each main cutting edge. The edge projections of both of the main cutting edges form a non-zero first angle therebetween. The rake surfaces of the cutting protrusions are located on longitudinally opposite end surfaces of the cutting insert. Two clamping recesses and two abutment recesses serve as contact surfaces for clamping the cutting insert in an insert pocket of a cutting tool.

The clamp head has a frustum-shaped portion that is received in a mounting screw bore of a cutting insert. The wedge clamp contacts a radiused bottom wall of the clamp bore when the clamp screw is threaded into a threaded bore of an insert pocket, thereby causing the clamp head to exert a downward and rearward force against a mounting screw bore of the cutting insert to securely hold the cutting insert in the insert pocket. The screw head wedge clamp does not contact a top surface of the cutting insert, but only the frustum-shaped portion contacts the mounting screw bore of the cutting insert.

Abstract: With conventional small troublesome indexable inserts from high-pressure sintered materials having neither a screw-hole nor a cavity for attaching the insert to a toolholder, clamping the insert onto the holder has been complicated and the tightening force has been weak. The cause behind this is that with the hardness of high-pressure sintered material being high, surface machining is extremely difficult. A toolholder attachment cavity is provided in the rake face of an indexable insert composed of a high-pressure sintered material, by machining with a laser whose light output power is adjusted and whose light-harvesting is enhanced using a galvanometer mirror, while high-precision controlling the beaming position. This allows small-scale indexable insert of high-pressure sintered material to be mounted onto a holder simply and securely with a clamp, and makes for curtailed prep time, improved machining precision, and better mounting reliability.

  • Patent number: 5993118
Abstract: A metal-cutting tool comprises a holder, a clamp, and a metal-cutting insert. The holder includes a blade part which forms an upwardly facing seating surface extending in a front-to-rear direction. The holder includes a recess including a longitudinal axis extending in the front-to-rear direction at an angle relative to the seating surface, whereby an imaginary rearward extension of the seating surface converges toward the axis. The insert is mounted on the seating surface and the clamp has a rear portion which is slidable within the recess, whereby a front portion of the clamp pushes downwardly and rearwardly against a top surface of the insert. That top surface is shaped so that the front portion of the clamp is flexed upwardly relative to the rear portion when the rear portion is pushed rearwardly to the clamping position.

  • Patent number: 5988952
Abstract: A system for clamping a cutting insert on a grooving, threading, or milling tool wherein a top clamp member and a support plate are mounted on the tool's surface. The contacting surfaces of the tool, clamp member, and support plate are ground to a smooth finish. A cutting insert is formed with upper and lower V-shaped surfaces and is received in corresponding V-shaped recesses formed in edge portions of the top clamp member and the support plate. Bolts having left hand threads secure the top clamp member to the tool so as to clamp the insert between the top clamping member and the support plate.

  • Patent number: 5904193
Abstract: The invention concerns a cutter head, in particular a planing cutter head, whose blade carrier (1) has at least one mounting (5), facing radially outwards, for a blade (7). Fitted in each mounting (5) is a wedge grip (17) which can be moved relative to the blade carrier (1) and which presses the blade (7) against a stop (9) on the mounting (5) when moved with at least a component of motion radially outwards. Located between the blade (7) and the wedge grip (17) is a mounting strip (21) which can be moved relative to the wedge grip (17) and the stop (9) on the mounting (5) and which releases the blade (7) for removal radially outwards when the wedge grip (17) is displaced inwards.

  • Patent number: 5685672
Abstract: A cutting insert has top and bottom surfaces and a center hole extending between those surfaces. The insert is seated in a pocket of a toolholder. A clamp is attached to a body of the toolholder by a screw which extends through a through-hole of the clamp and is threadably engaged with the body. An inner end of the clamp engages the body, and a projection at the outer end of the clamp enters the center hole of the insert. When the clamp is tightened, it is displaced downwardly such that a planar under surface of the clamp pushes downwardly against the insert, and is also displaced inwardly so that the projection of the clamp pushes the insert rearwardly against an upright support surface. The inward displacement of the clamp is achieved by causing the inner end of the clamp to engage an inclined surface of the body, or by causing a head of the screw to displace the clamp inwardly.

  • Patent number: 5669742
Abstract: A tool holder has a insert-support surface and a wedge-support surface. A pin projects upwardly from the insert-support surface and enters a through-hole of a cutting insert that is seated on the insert-support surface. The wedge-support surface includes a front portion disposed adjacent the insert-support surface and a rear portion extending upwardly from the front portion at an inclination. A wedge contacts both of the front and rear portions and is secured by a fastening screw which passes through the wedge and enters the front portion. The wedge includes a front insert-engaging bulge, and a lower heel which contacts the front portion and defines a pivot axis which is located closer to the pin than is the bulge. Upon tightening of the screw, the wedge is (a) pushed toward the insert by the rear portion of the wedge-support surface to push the insert against the pin, and (b) caused to pivot about the pivot axis in a direction producing a slight downward movement of the bulge.
