When assembled, the cutting insert is releasably clamped in the insert receiving slot. The at least one insert engagement arrangement abuts the at least one slot engagement arrangement only at the insert engagement wedge surfaces and the slot engagement wedge surfaces.

The recessed portion has two inner surfaces having curved portions disposed so the distance between them gradually decreases at the contact area between the recessed portion and the protrusion fitted thereto. The protrusions each have two curved outer surfaces arranged so the distance between them gradually decreases toward a tip of the protrusion, at the contact area between the protrusion and the recessed portion into which the protrusion is fitted.

When the clamp is tightened, it is displaced downwardly such that a planar under surface of the clamp pushes downwardly against the insert, and is also displaced inwardly so that the projection of the clamp pushes the insert rearwardly against an upright support surface. The inward displacement of the clamp is achieved by causing the inner end of the clamp to engage an inclined surface of the body, or by causing a head of the screw to displace the clamp inwardly.

The floating wedge includes a main body member having opposed leading and trailing surfaces and a swivel plate member having opposed leading and trailing surfaces. The leading surface of the main body member and the trailing surface of the swivel plate member are disposed in abutting relationship and are provided with complementary configurations, thereby enabling the relative slidable movement between the members such that orientation of the leading surface of the swivel plate member relative to the trailing surface of the main body member may be adjusted. The adjustability between the members enables full and equal contact pressure to be established between the floating wedge, the indexable insert and the walls of the insert pocket, thereby eliminating localized stresses and preventing insert failure.
