In some implementations, an expected rate of shrinkage of the block upon undergoing a firing process may be determined. A scaling factor may then be applied using the expected rate of shrinkage to select a tap having a size larger than a desired thread size. A green block may then be tapped with the selected tap to form a threaded opening in the green block. The block may be machined in order to remove cracks caused by the tapping process and/or to form the block into a desired shape/size. • Patent number: 4801226
Abstract: A broaching machine and method for machining main bearings and crankpin bearings on a crankshaft for an automotive engine wherein a plurality of removable cutting tool inserts are arranged on a horizontally reciprocating slide below a rotating crankshaft to machine a plurality of bearings and distribute machining forces over the machining operation during a single pass of the slide. The slide also serves as a transfer device for loading and unloading crankshafts into the machine. An air bearing can be developed between the slide and the tooling to assist the operator in removing the tooling from the slide.

  • Patent number: 4740115
Abstract: A broach for working the services of pre-cast or preformed pins on workpieces while the workpieces are rotating, including a broach body and having a number of sections including a roughing section provided with cutting elements including perforated reversible plates fastened therein. The cutting plates are formed of a hard cutting material and have cutting edges which converge toward each other in a pushing direction of the broach during working along lines defining opposites acute angles symmetrical with respect to the longitudinal axis of the broach.

  • Patent number: 4671709
Abstract: A tooth broach designed for use with thin workpieces having its teeth arranged in circumferentially extending sets in each of which the teeth are arranged in groups of one or more teeth, and gaps devoid of teeth between adjacent groups. The teeth are further arranged in longitudinally extending series, in which consecutive teeth in each series are separated by gaps in the adjacent sets. This provides for reduced axial spacing between axially adjacent sets of teeth to maintain cutting action at all times with a thin workpiece.

  • Patent number: 4615091
Abstract: A method of processing a scroll member having a spiral wrap and an end plate which is conducted by effecting a shaving on at least one side surface of the spiral wrap by a tool while applying to the tool both of an axial small force and an ultrasonic oscillation simultaneously. An apparatus is proposed which comprises a shaving tool having a spiral groove of the same configuration as the spiral wrap, and a cutting edge portion formed on at least one side edge of the groove over the entire length of the side edge. A tool supporting device supports the shaving tool, and a blank supporting device supports a scroll blank such that the scroll blank opposes to the shaving tool. A device is connected to the tool supporting means and is adapted to impart to the tool a pressing force necessary for effecting the shaving, and an ultrasonic oscillation generating device is adapted to impart an ultrasonic oscillation to one of the tool or the blank.

  • Patent number: 4462723
Abstract: A broaching tool is formed with a slot within which an adjusting member is received. By adjusting the position of the adjusting member within the slot, forces are developed against the sides of the slot to deform the broaching tool thereby to adjust the operating dimensions of cutting teeth arranged on the broaching tool in the vicinity of the slot.

  • Patent number: 4274767
Abstract: A finishing broach for a work piece having helical teeth in which an elongated broach body has a multiplicity of series of helically aligned teeth and in which each tooth has sides conforming to the profile shape of the tooth spaces between adjacent teeth on the work piece, and in which the sides of each tooth are inclined to define obtuse and acute included angles at the leading corners. Each series of broach teeth has a leading and a following section. In the leading section at the acute side the teeth are all laterally stepped and backed off. At the obtuse side the teeth are neither laterally stepped nor backed off. In the following section at the obtuse side the teeth are all laterally stepped and backed off. In the following section at the acute side the first few teeth are backed off but are not laterally stepped. The following tooth is neither laterally stepped nor backed off but its side surface is chamfered from the front surface of the tooth rearwardly.
