  • Patent number: 4681490
Abstract: The automatic feed drill includes a spindle mounted therein for rotating in reciprocating movement. The spindle is rotated by spindle rotation gear that is engaged with the main drive gear which is ultimately driven by an air motor or the like. The feed and retraction movement (reciprocation) is caused by a spindle feed gear that is threaded onto the spindle. The spindle feed gear is engaged with a feed gear which, during feed movement, is driven by the main drive gear, and during retraction movement, is shifted into a position wherein the feed gear is prevented from rotating. The spindle also carries a collar or other abutment that engages a shift lever at the end of the feed movement. The shift lever is moved by the collar, and, due to its interconnection with the feed gear, moves the feed gear out of engagement with the main drive gear and into the position wherein it is prevented from rotating. The apparatus also includes a yieldable stop device that holds the feed gear stopped during retraction movement.

  • Patent number: 4642861
Abstract: A machine tool has a workholder and an axially aligned toolholder in juxtaposed relation, mounted for relative rotation. A first slide supported for longitudinal reciprocating movement along a "y" axis, supports a cross slide on which a toolholder is mounted for reciprocating crosswise movement to the first slide along an "x" axis. Bell crank motion transmission mechanism on the first slide is interposed between a push bar connected between an NC controlled rotary servo motor and the cross slide, and another NC controlled rotary servo motor is mounted to operate the first slide. Rotary to linear motion translation mechanism couples one servo motor to the first slide and another servo motor to the push bar. The push bar has a longitudinally extending flat face portion thereon and a member extends parallel with the flat face portion crosswisely to the longitudinal extent thereof to ride along the flat face portion.

  • Patent number: 4627773
Abstract: A spindle which may be connected to machine tools, taking power from a rotating power shaft of the machine for advancing and retracting a rotating tool at right angles to the power shaft of the machine. The spindle has a rearward uniform diameter screw which projects through a feed nut and into a hollow headstock. The feed nut has threads engaging the threads of the screw, together with an adjacent hollow section which seats an annular thrust bearing, as well as a rear collar of the headstock which constrains the headstock to move with the feed nut. Power is transferred to the headstock by means of a rotating quill, coaxial with the screw, but axially constrained within a housing. The quill is provided with a lengthwise keyway which is colinear with a similar, but much longer keyway in the headstock. The headstock is able to axially slide back and forth through the quill as the headstock is pushed and pulled by the feed nut moving on the screw.

Abstract: A boring tool particularly useful for cutting counterbores in an engine block includes means for selectively engaging and disengaging an output shaft which is rotated and axially advanced during the cutting operation. Preferably, the selective engaging and disengaging means includes feed threads formed on the output shaft, and a threaded means which is selectively moveable into and out of threaded engagement with the feed threads on the output shaft. Preferably, the boring tool is of the differential-rate type wherein the output shaft is rotated at a first predetermined rotational rate and the threaded means is rotated at a second different predetermined rotational rate. The differential rotational rate establishes the advancement rate of the output shaft. The position of the output shaft and the cutter element it carries can be readily adjusted without necessity of operating the boring tool to establish the cutter position.

  • Patent number: 4453868
Abstract: Air-operated, hydraulically controlled portable drill-countersink tool automatically clamping to workpiece. A spindle attached to drill is connected to gearing from a motor by helical splines to withdraw the spindle, to counter spindle-feeding force, responsive to encountering increased torque due to increased resistance in drilling or countersinking. In a hydraulic cylinder for collet clamping a lower air pressure is converted to higher hydraulic pressure. When drilling depth is reached, drill feeding changes to drill withdrawal and that change is triggered by blocking of an air vent by a member traveling with the spindle. A lower drill speed during countersinking is achieved by a valve reducing air supply to the motor and change in that valve is also triggered by blocking of air vent by a member traveling with the spindle. The blades of the air motor do not change in extension when loaded and the motor has constant torque.

The rapid traverse mechanism holds the nut fixed in position in the interval between rapid advance and rapid retraction. A peck feed mechanism is connected to the feed screw and repetitively feeds the spindle toward the work by causing the feed screw to progressively advance into the nut in the intervals when the nut is fixed in position. • Patent number: RE31627
Abstract: A quill drive comprising a housing adapted for mounting on machine tools. A quill is slidably mounted in a longitudinal bore in the housing, and is longitudinally positioned by a ball screw. The ball screw is driven for longitudinal positioning of the quill by a variable speed, reversible motor. The quill rotatably supports a spindle for driving various cutting tools. The spindle is advanced longitudinally by the quill and is rotatably driven by a second motor. The quill drive can be used singly or in a multiple arrangement on transfer machines or other automatic equipment. The unique design has fewer parts resulting in a simple reliable, relatively inexpensive device which is compact and easy to use. A relatively simple modification of the gear box converts the quill drive into a drive for tapping threaded holes.
