Abstract: An adjustable torque limiter that can be coupled between a high speed driver and the socket that rotates a mechanical fastener. When a preset torque level is reached, the torque limiter disengages the rotational drive force from the bit. The adjustability of the torque limitation is accomplished by varying the amount of spring force by which a thrust plate (coupled to the high speed driver) is forced against a set of steel balls residing in slots of a radial torque plate and in a set of paths formed in a concavity of an upper torque body (coupled to the driven socket engaging stud). When a certain preset torque is transmitted from the driver to the socket, the steel balls traverse outward along the separate arced ramp radial paths therein the upper torque body until the balls enter an annular race that allows the thrust plate to go into a disengaged or free wheel mode from the upper torque body.

  • Patent number: 5437524
Abstract: Disclosed is a torque-adjustment controller for use with a tool to safely adjust and control the torque the tool works on a workpiece. The torque-adjustment controller mainly consists of a housing, an output shaft, an input shaft, a stepped ring, a lugged movable member contacting the stepped ring, a torque spring disposed between the output and the input shafts. The output shaft has recesses to engage with steel balls contained on the input shaft so that force exerted on the input shaft by a tool may be transmitted to the output shaft via the engagement of the steel balls with the recesses of the output shaft. The stepped ring has multiple sets of steps providing different head drops and will cause the lugged movable member contacting it to shift axially when the stepped ring is rotated. The axially shifted movable member will further compress the torque spring to generate stronger torque or release the torque spring for the same to generate weaker torque.

Abstract: A tapping attachment for driving a tapping spindle constructed to be adapted for both direct drive and reverse drive of the spindle. The drive of the spindle is by way of a resiliently mounted dog ring having rigid radially extending drive dogs, extending radially outwardly and inwardly from a drive ring. The driving dogs are rigid, having slanting sides to accommodate clutching engagement and disengagement. Clutching engagement and disengagement occur as a result of relative axial movement as between the attachment and the drive spindle. The drive spindle has a central bore in which is provided an insert member having an axial bore which is connected to a flexible tube within the bore of the spindle, which accommodates relative axial movement, the flexible tube communicating with a similar bore in a tap itself. These bores provide a channel for continuously supplying coolant to the machine and to the spindle itself.
