A movable mechanical stop permits an operator user to adjust countersink depth. The control logic provides fully automatic feed of the drill bit, and adjustment of the dwell time to consistently produce identical countersunk holes in a variety of workpiece materials.

    Abstract: A hydraulic stop for use in drilling or countersinking operations comprises a rotatable body for rotating a tool about its axis. A cage adapted to contact the surface of a workpiece when the tool has penetrated into the workpiece by a predetermined distance actuates a trip mechanism comprising a plunger-operated hydraulic valve as the tool penetrates the workpiece more than the predetermined distance. The plunger is of adjustable length. When actuated the trip mechanism allows the body to shrink in length suddenly. The cage is axially adjustable in relation to the body to set the predetermined depth at which the trip mechanism actuates. A plurality of holes spaced around the circumference of the body to which the cage is mounted allow drainage of coolant whatever the axial position of the cage.

A nose cone is adjustably attached to the front of the locking ring and when the nose cone bottoms out on the workpiece, continued movement of the drill bit assembly relative to the nose cone assembly causes the locking ring to allow the locking balls to disengage the collet holder after ½″ additional travel.     Abstract: A drilling machine and method of operation for drilling through holes in a workpiece while minimizing penetration of the drill tool into a back-up material which supports the workpiece. Before placing the workpiece on the machine, the vertical position of the back-up material is mapped. After selection of the drill site, the mapped position of the backup material proximate the drill site is retrieved. Using this information, a computer controller determines an absolute vertical position for a lower limit of the drill stroke. This lower limit is independent of the top of the workpiece or the thickness of the workpiece, thus eliminating the need to determine either of those values. The drill stroke is terminated once the drill tool reaches the lower limit, which is a nominal depth below the mapped position of the back-up material, insuring that a hole is completely drilled through the workpiece, while minimizing penetration of the back-up material.

    Abstract: The drilling machine comprises a pair of cross slides formed of two parallelepiped blocks of granite connected as a T above a horizontally stationary board carrying table. The transverse block carries two operating heads and, by means of pneumostatic bearings, guides their movement along the X-axis. The other block is guided by the machine frame by means of other pneumostatic bearings. Each head carries a spindle operable to lock and unlock the tool to permit automatic tool replacement from a corresponding tool magazine with provision for checking the integrity of the engaged tool. One of the heads can be disengaged from the X-axis servomotor and connected to the other one at a predetermined distance. Two series of equal printed circuit supports can be drilled simultaneously by using a single package of boards to be cut after the drilling or the etching. Tool changing and tool integrity checking operations can be effected simultaneously for the two operating heads.

    Abstract: A drilling machine of the woodpecker type employs a spindle carrying a drill. The spindle is mounted for rotation in a housing having an attached feed screw and those members form an assembly that can be axially moved while the spindle rotates to enable the drill to be fed toward and retracted away from the work. The feed screw is engaged by a nut whose position is controlled by a rapid traverse mechanism which can rapidly retract the spindle away from the work and can rapidly advance the spindle toward the work. The rapid traverse mechanism holds the nut fixed in position in the interval between rapid advance and rapid retraction. A peck feed machanism is connected to the feed screw and repititively feeds the spindle toward the work by causing the feed screw to progressively advance into the nut in the intervals when the nut is fixed in position. A hitch feed is coupled to the feed screw and acts to prevent the drill from bottoming in the hole on rapid advance.
