Abstract: Machining of aluminum workpieces with diamond or diamond-like carbon-surface coated tools may be conducted in an atmosphere containing hydrogen gas at a partial pressure effective for hydrogen to react with carbon atoms at the surface to form C—H bonds that resist adherence of aluminum to the tool surface. Suitably, hydrogen or a hydrogen-containing gas mixture is confined at the interface of tool and workpieces at the machining site. Hydrogen partial pressure may be determined for a tool-workpiece-machining temperature combination by calculation or experiment.

  • Publication number: 20080283305
Abstract: Hardfacing is applied on the gage surface of bit blades, the leading and trailing edges of bit blades, and on carbide inserts. The gage surface contains natural diamonds, synthetic diamonds, thermal stable polycrystalline (TSP) diamonds and carbide inserts, and the hardfacing is applied over at least a portion of them. As the primary cutters on the bit blades are worn down during drilling, the gage surface of the bit is also worn down. A hardfacing is applied to the worn gage surfaces of the bit, thereby allowing the bit to drill deeper and longer without requiring replacement.
