Patent number: 10485556Abstract: A quick-connect drill bit assembly comprising a drive shank and a drill bit releasably attached to the drive shank, the drill hit being configured to bore a first hole in a bone through a drill guide. A portion of the drill bit is configured to remain within the first hole after the drive shank is detached therefrom, the drill bit being configured to prevent the drill guide from rotating with respect to the bone as a second hole is bored into the bone.Type: GrantFiled: April 5, 2017Date of Patent: November 26, 2019Assignee: Biomet Manufacturing, LLCInventors: Clinton E. Kehres, Jason M. Hurst

Patent number: 9446454Abstract: A segmented orbital drill includes a segmented portion with a semi-finishing cutting portion and a plurality of finishing cutting portions. The semi-finishing cutting portion and finishing cutting portions are separated by grooves formed by a front wall and a rear wall. The segmented portion allows for a fresh cutting edge (i.e., rear wall of the groove) to be revealed as the orbital drill wears in the axial direction. The segmented portion also causes less contact with the workpiece, which reduces power consumption and minimizes deflection of the orbital drill. The segmented orbital drill also includes an optional pilot at one end of the drill, and a clearance neck portion between a shank and the segmented portion. A method of machining a workpiece using the segmented orbital drill is also disclosed.Type: GrantFiled: July 18, 2014Date of Patent: September 20, 2016Assignee: KENNAMETAL INC.Inventor: Karen Anne Craig

Patent number: 9180532Abstract: One non-limiting aspect of the present disclosure is directed to a multi-piece twist drill head. The multi-piece twist drill head includes a core piece formed from a first hard material, and a peripheral piece formed from a second hard material. The core piece and peripheral piece each comprise a cutting edge and are adapted to mate to provide a central region and a peripheral region, respectively, of the multi-piece twist drill head. A twist drill including the multi-piece twist drill head is also disclosed.Type: GrantFiled: June 3, 2014Date of Patent: November 10, 2015Assignee: KENNAMETAL, INC.Inventors: X. Patent number: 6206616Abstract: A tool and method for cutting a circular opening and retaining the cut portion. The tool comprises a shaft having at least one cutting thread and at least one tapping thread, or at least one cutting thread and at least one male screw thread, or only at least one tapping thread, or only at least one male screw thread, or a cutting tip and at least one tapping thread, or a cutting tip and at least one male screw thread, and a cutting member having at least one cutting bit radially displaced from the shaft. The shaft and the cutting member have a mutual rotational axis. An alternative tool has a spaced distance on the shaft between the cutting member and the at least one cutting thread and at least one tapping thread, or the at least one cutting thread and at least one male screw thread, or the at least one tapping thread, or the at least one male screw thread, or the cutting tip and at least one tapping thread, or the cutting tip and at least one male screw thread.Type: GrantFiled: August 24, 1998Date of Patent: March 27, 2001Assignee: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.Inventors: Garrett E. Patent number: 4580933Abstract: A twist drill is provided with a countersink and collar assembly. The countersink includes a body with a face which cooperates with a similar face of the collar to trap a pair of balls between them. The faces being conical, enable the balls to be driven radially inward into the drill flutes by tightening the collar onto the countersink. A chip deflector is provided at the cutting edges of the countersink.Type: GrantFiled: November 7, 1983Date of Patent: April 8, 1986Assignee: Electromechanical Research Laboratories, Inc.Inventor: Larry C.
