Abstract: The present invention describes electroformed thin-wall nickel core drills that are impregnated with diamond abrasives. The thin-wall core drills are formed with a plurality of raised portions and an equal plurality of recessed portions, with each raised portion alternating with a recessed portion, the raised and recessed portions are substantially parallel and are connected by transition portions. In another embodiment, some of the transition regions are formed with intermediate steps or partially raised and recessed portions. These intermediate steps or partially raised or recessed portions allow more uniform distribution of matrix material across a kerf width D1 as the core drill is spun, thereby, giving the cut edge a substantially square profile.

  • Patent number: 5944460
Abstract: The present invention discloses an annular hole cutter particularly useful for cutting railroad rails. Railroad rails are extremely hard and normally require drills or cutters which have carbide inserts. The present invention provides uniquely designed cutter with an improved cutter geometry, flute design and thin wall construction to allow the annular cutter to be used with a lower horsepower drill motor making the drill motor portable resulting in a portable rail cutting system.

  • Patent number: 5931614
Abstract: An annular bit (1) having an attachable center drill (6) is proposed, in which annular bit (1), on the one hand, reliable holding of the center drill (6) in the annular bit (1) is ensured and, in particular, distributions of the cutting segments (3) on the annular bit (1) differing from the 90.degree. symmetry are made possible. This is achieved according to the invention in that the center-drill holder (4) has at least one push-in pin (11) and the wall of the annular bit (1) has at least one recess (14, 15, 16) for accommodating the push-in pin (11), which pin and recess are formed in such a way that the push-in pin (11) is retained in the recess (14, 15, 16) in the axial direction relative to the annular-bit axis in the locked state of the center-drill holder (4).

  • Patent number: 5842820
Abstract: A cutter for use in fabricating dowels, plugs, or tenons has a hex-shaped shank and a body portion. The body portion includes a spur which is the first part of the cutter to contact the wood and which makes an initial depression into the wood. A cutting tooth has a cutting edge for cutting a trough into the wood and is the widest part of the cutter. The exterior surfaces of the cutter above the cutting tooth are formed at smaller radial distances and consequently have less, if not no, contact with the piece of wood being cut. The cutting tooth may be tapered along its height whereby the bottom of the tooth would be the thickest part of the tooth and would have the most contact with the wood. Also, the portion of the cutter trailing the spur may be formed with teeth and flutes thereby reducing the amount of contact between the cutter and the wood. By reducing the amount of contact between the wood and the cutter, the cutter has a reduced amount of friction with the wood.

  • Patent number: 5810524
Abstract: A plug cutter has a main body portion having a longitudinal axis, shank portion extending axially from one end of the main body, and a plurality of blades extending axially from an opposite end of the main body. The blades are formed so that at least a portion of the inner surfaces thereof have a measure of radial relief with respect to the leading edges of the blades. A radial distance from the axis of rotation of the plug cutter to the leading edge of each blade is always less than the radial distance from the axis of rotation to any other portion of the inner surface. Accordingly, when a plug is being cut with the plug cutter, a gap is defined between an outer surface of the plug and the radially relieved portion of the inner surfaces.

  • Patent number: 5803678
Abstract: An improved hole saw for cutting holes having a cylindrical shape that includes, along its cutting edge, a plurality of repetitive groups of saw teeth having at least four radially displaced trailing teeth. The displacement of each trailing tooth is such that it has a substantially greater displacement than for any other tooth of said group preceding said trailing tooth. The displacement of each tooth being such that the cutting edge thereof is characterized as being movable along a cutting path different from the cutting paths of the other teeth of the group as the hole saw is rotated whereby each tooth cuts chips of uniform size. Each group of teeth may include a raker tooth having no substantial displacement with respect to the side surfaces of the hole saw. The raker tooth may be the same height or of greater height than the trailing teeth.

  • Patent number: 5803677
Abstract: A hole saw comprises a cup with two cutting teeth positioned on the open end of the cup. The two cutting teeth are substantially diametrically opposed to one another to provide a balanced cutting engagement of the media and are spaced apart by a chord length of between about 45 to about 180 degrees. A pair of secondary gullets are positioned in the cup proximate to a forward cutting edge of the two cutting teeth. The secondary gullets have a predetermined depth and shape along a longitudinal axis of the cup to suitably remove debris from the cup during a portion of the duration of the hole cut. A plurality of raker teeth may be positioned on the chords defining the spacing between the cutting teeth. The raker teeth are disposed below the cutting teeth, approximately 0.030 inches to engage and move cutting debris formed by the cutting teeth.

  • Patent number: 5791837
Abstract: A tool for cutting holes in metal provides a shank defining at one end an arbor releasably carrying a circularly annular cutter that defines teeth at each cutter end which may be sequentially used to extend cutter life without sharpening. The annular cutter defines a plurality of spirally arrayed, inwardly extending flutes and alternating outwardly extending lands on both inner and outer sides to provide cutting edges on both cutter sides at each end. The lands are formed with buttress type sides angulated ten to sixty degrees to a radius passing therethrough steeper spiral arrays of lands and grooves are arrayed in shallower spirals with an angle of up to seventy degrees to the axis of the cutter to allow thinner wall construction in my cutter than in prior cutters. The thinner cutter wall allows definition of more cutting teeth than would thicker walls and the cutter configuration allows definition of stronger, more efficient teeth without gullets.
