The bone and dental drills have at least some centers of mass that are offset from the drills' axis of rotation. Accordingly, the bone and dental drills may rotate and cut using a precessional pattern of motion. The design facilitates bone cutting, chip formation and hauling capacity, irrigation and bone harvesting. In some embodiments, the bone chips are collected in a removable apparatus fixed to the distal portion of the drill, and the collected bone chips can be used for bone grafting.

    Abstract: A drill bit system, assembly, and method enables a user to quickly and easily interchange drill bits upon a shank during drilling operations. The drill bit system comprises an elongate shank, a series of drill bits, and a set screw. The shank has a notched, bit-engaging end. Each drill bit has a shank-engaging end and a bit axis. Each shank-engaging end has inner female structure for receiving the bit-engaging end and a threaded aperture. Each threaded aperture respectively extends from the inner female structure orthogonally relative to the bit axis, and each female structure has a substantially uniform inner bit diameter sized for receiving the shank. The bit-engaging end is receivable by the shank-engaging ends, and the set screw is threadably receivable by both the threaded apertures and the notch for removably and interchangeably fastening the drill bits to the shank.

A flute extends generally along with the tool's axis and defines a straight cutting edge and contour cutting edge. The system may include a fixture with vacuum cups nested within a platform so as to secure a contoured workpiece by static friction, permitting edges of the workpiece to be both trimmed and smoothly finished using a multi-purpose edge finishing tool, without marring or disfiguring the surface of the workpiece.

    Abstract: A drill powered reciprocating saw including a safety gear assembly which disengages the saw's drive mechanism should the operator lose his or her grip on the saw housing. The gear assembly includes a motor drive shaft that is connected to an electric drill and which drives a jackshaft by means of a pair of interlocking gears. At rest, the drive shaft is biased by a spring to a position where the gears are not in contact with each other. When the operator pulls the saw housing toward the drill, the spring is compressed and the gears are engaged, thus allowing the saw to operate. Should the operator lose his or her grip on the housing, the spring biases the drive shaft back to its original position, thereby disengaging the gears.

    Abstract: A system for notching tubes to facilitate their joinder to other tubes or rods, in which a first portion of the notch is formed by a rotary cutting action extending progressively inwardly into the tube side wall and then outwardly in an arcuate path, and the second portion of the notch is formed by a plunging, shearing action which simultaneously punches the entire second portion of the notch out of the wall of the tube. The apparatus for forming each of the notches preferably includes a pair of die halves which together define a tube receiving passage intersected by a tool receiving passage, and a cutting tool positioned in the tool receiving passage. The tool is provided with a substantially axially extending rotary cutting edge for forming the first portion of the notch and a shearing edge for punching out the second portion of the notch when the tool is plunged through the wall of a tube positioned in the intersection of the tube and tool receiving passages.
