  • Patent number: 4997194
Abstract: A drill chuck key for use with a conventional Jacobs-type drill chuck includes a cylindrical shaft having a bevel gear secured adjacent one end. A knob has a central cylindrical boss receiving an opposite end of the shaft. A roll pin extends through aligned apertures in the boss and the shaft, securing the knob for rotation with the shaft. A circular ring is received with clearance on the shaft, between the bevel gear and the knob. The ring has a diameter less than the bevel gear and the cylindrical boss and greater than the shaft, such that the ring is captured on the shaft. • Patent number: 4850758
Abstract: This is an improved method for quickly changing and holding drill bits in electric drills. It includes hexagonal-ended drill bits and a holder with safety device for the bits. The holder is a steel sleeve with a male hexagonal end for insertion into 1/4" and larger drills. The opposite end is a female hex to receive the hex-ended drill bits. The holder is magnetized to hold the bits. The holder also supports a spring loaded two-piece safety split sleeve device surrounding the holder. The drill bit end of the split sleeve is folded over a fit into a circular groove in the drill bit and is held firmly in the groove by spring tension. This device keeps the bit in the holder when removing the bit from the material being worked. The split sleeves pivot at their attachment point to the holder, thus permitting rapid changing of drill bits (and other hex accessories) by simply squeezing the chuck end of the split sleeves causing them to pivot, thus opening the opposite end so that bits can be inserted and removed.

  • Patent number: 4818158
Abstract: A floating tap holder has a shank rotatably connected to a hollow sleeve. The hollow sleeve has opposed longitudinally extending slots. A drive shaft connected to a conventional chuck is axially movable within the hollow sleeve. A hand operated drive rod extends transversely through the opposed slots and is secured to the drive shaft. A coil spring received within the hollow sleeve biases the transversely extending drive rod and connected drive shaft axially downward. In use, the freely rotatable shank is received in the chuck of a conventional drill press, milling machine or lathe. A tap is mounted in the chuck of the floating tap holder and positioned in a previously drilled hole to be tapped. The spindle of the machine tool is moved downwardly, thus compressing the spring within the hollow sleeve. Then, the hand operated drive rod is rotated, thus rotating the drive shaft and chuck. The sleeve also rotates with the hand operated drive rod.

Abstract: A two-speed gear box for handheld electric drills and the like has the movable parts associated with gear changing on or associated with a lay shaft. Gear changing is preferably effected by moving a pair of dogs, slidably mounted in holes through a lay shaft gear, to drivingly engage in either of two dog clutch members on the lay shaft. A thin flexible arm, preferably including a ring around the lay shaft, mounted in cantilever fashion from a movable base effects movement of the dogs. Should the dogs not be in proper register with a respective dog clutch member when changing speed, then the arm flexes and urges the dogs into driving engagement when proper register occurs. A family of two-speed drills having different specialized functions, e.g. a drill, a hammer drill, a screwdriver/drill, a screwdriver, etc., can be produced with the maximum parts in common enabling greater manufacturing flexibility and lower cost of manufacturing the family.

The drill power switch is tied in the closed position. Therefore the user can control drill feed and operation with one hand.

  • Patent number: 4627628
Abstract: A drill chuck for a hammer drill with a plurality of clamp jaws fed in feed channels to engage a drill in a tool holder, the clamp jaws being adjustable by means of a support ring, the support ring bearing a restraining casing having teeth thereon which can engage gearing in the support ring so as to lock it against further rotation. The restraining casing is lockable in two axial positions, in one position in engagement with the support ring, in the other out of engagement with the support ring. The restraining casing is slid into engagement with the support ring in a covering jacket which holds the restraining casing axially tightly so that drilling waste can not impede engagement of the restraining casing with the support ring. Cleaning passages run through the chuck body from the tool holder to the surroundings so that drilling waste will be removed from the tool holder and the chuck interior during drilling operation.

  • Patent number: 4627627
Abstract: A drill chuck is secured on a drill spindle so as to be actuated thereby. The drill chuck has an axial passage through which the impact effect of a central anvil shaft is transferred to the end of the drill held in the drill chuck. The drill chuck can be connected to the drill spindle by coupling elements respectively arranged in coupling retainers of the drill spindle and/or the chuck body. The coupling retainers are axially of greater longitudinal dimension than the coupling elements, and permit axial displacement of the drill chuck. A contact ring which can not be displaced in axial direction presents an annular surface towards a further annular surface at the drill chuck body. Abutment projections can preclude axial displacement of the drill chuck on the drill spindle, and associated abutment recesses are also provided into which the abutment projections fit at least to a depth equivalent to the axial displacement movement of the drill chuck.

Abstract: A boring bar and associated measuring gage device, according to the invention, includes a gaging surface on the measuring gage device that is engagable with a gaging surface on the boring bar. By such engagement, a measuring surface on the measuring gage device remains perpendicular to a reference plane defined by the cutting tip of the boring bar's cutting tool and the rotational center line of the boring bar, thereby substantially assuring accurate measuring, gaging, or positioning of the radial position of the cutting tip. Preferably, attachment means are provided for releasably fixing the measuring means to the boring bar in order to maintain such engagement of the gaging surfaces during such measuring, gaging or positioning of the cutting tool.
