Drilling Deep Holes Patents (Class 408/705)
  • Patent number: 4813824
Abstract: A single-lip solid drilling tool has a one-piece shank with an integral head having a radially or diametrically extending groove for a blade with an eccentric tip. The blade is held in its groove by several clamping screws so that it can be removed for sharpening or for replacement with a fresh blade. One or both lateral portions of the blade extend beyond the periphery of the head to guide the tool in actual use. The shank has an eccentric coolant hole whose discharge end is adjacent the blade and which is formed by providing a short cylindrical hard-metal blank with an eccentric axially parallel bore before the blank is stretched to reduce its diameter to a requisite value and to simultaneously reduce the diameter of the bore. The stretched blank is then machined to provide it with one or more chip evacuating flutes and, if necessary, with one or more grooves for discrete guide members which extend beyond the peripheral surface of the head.

  • Patent number: 4568226
Abstract: In known deep-hole drilling machines, the undesirable situation arises, in the case of large drilling depths, that the boring bar, which becomes increasingly softer with increasing drilling depth, sags and starts to vibrate, so that the boring bar must be supported. This should, however, be possible at suitable spacings in the simplest possible manner and without interrupting the working process. For this purpose, it is envisaged that at least one guide bush for supporting the boring bar in a workpiece bore is provided on the boring bar, the guide bush being associated in a coaxial arrangement with a clamping ring of a ringe thickness which makes self-jamming tilting on the boring bar possible, and which clamping ring is pivotally coupled at one peripheral point to the guide bush to permit a small radial movement and has an external diameter smaller than that of the guide bush, and that at least one disengageable stopping device for a guide bush is provided within the coolant feed device.

  • Patent number: 4184794
Abstract: A device for machining the internal wall of a cylinder has a tool head with a shank securable to a rotary and axial movable boring bar. Mounted on the periphery of the tool head are a deep hole boring bit, a paring bit and a pair of obliquely mounted smoothing rolls. There is a passage for coolant to the boring bit which decreases in size in a direction opposite to the machining direction so that the coolant is accelerated in the passage to enhance cooling and flushing of swarf. A pair of radially adjustable supporting blocks assist in supporting the tool head in the cylinder and are substantially coplanar with the boring bit. The paring bit is disposed closely behind the plane in which the blocks and the boring bit lie. Downstream of the boring bit, the coolant passage is wider and has a constant cross-section area for a limited extent. The tool head further includes a bush having a helical channel therein for passage of some of the coolant to act as a lubricant.

  • Patent number: 4119388
Abstract: A horizontal boring mill for machining work at a high rate. The boring mill includes a massive boring bar which carries intermediate its end the boring-tool holder from which boring tools extend radially. The boring bar is rotated by a first drive of sufficient power to enable the boring tool to take a deep cut in the work at a high rate. The boring bar is rotatable on bearings of substantial area; a bearing between the first drive and the bar and bearings on each side of the work. The bar, the first drive and the bearing between the first drive and the bar are moved along the bed of the boring mill by a second drive so that the boring tool engages and cuts the work. The other bearings are secured to the bed and the bar is moved through them. Each bearing on each side of the work carries a facing tool which is rotatable by the bar as the bar is rotated but is not movable with the bar. These bearings may be adjustably secured along the bed so that the facing tool is in position to face the ends of the work.
