  • Patent number: 4822216
Abstract: Improved apparatus for threading a longitudinally divided partial hole in a machine component has a tap driving spindle selectively and reciprocally carried by a frame. On a base plate is a positioning means for holding the component in a predetermined relationship with the frame and locater means for accurately aligning the component with the tap driving spindle. A movable guide shoe that is operable in combination with the locater means opposes the partial hole to be threaded and forms temporarily an opposed partial hole that accurately guides the tap. Adjustment and retainer means are used for selective positioning of the guide shoe in relation to the tap guide hole.

  • Patent number: 4770570
Abstract: A lock collar for a drill bushing and a system for cooling a drill bit during a drilling operation are arranged so as to be incorporated into a single mechanism. The mechanism involves two assemblies, one being a locking liner embedded in a jig plate, and the other being a coolant directing assembly adapted to be mounted on a power-fed tool. There is coolant passage means in the coolant directing assembly which accepts coolant from an appropriate source and directs it through the first mentioned assembly to the cutting edge of the drill bit or other cutting tool while the cutting operation is taking place. By reverse rotation of the coolant directing assembly, that assembly can then be removed for subsequent engagement with another locking liner.

  • Patent number: 4733996
Abstract: The fixture, in a first embodiment of the invention, comprises a flat base having a plurality of mounting holes formed therein, and a platform supported above the base, by a plurality of legs integral with both the base and platform. The base and platform are in parallel planes, and the platform has a guide bushing slidably engaged with an aperture formed in the platform. A lock screw, threaded into a tapped hole formed in the platform adjustably secures the bush in place. Plugs engageable with tubes in the tubesheet are passed into the mounting holes in the base to fix the base securely to the tubesheet, and the bushing receives therein a drill for drilling out a tube, in the tubesheet, which is directly aligned with the bushing. The bushing has an arcuate cut-out formed therein to accommodate the withdrawal of the bushing from the platform, without having to release the plugs, and its replacement by another bushing to facilitate reaming of the tubesheet.

  • Patent number: 4708540
Abstract: A two-part drill bushing assembly makes use of a sleeve, identified in the trade as a lock liner bushing which is embedded in a jig plate for reception of a separate slip renewable bushing element. Extending through the renewable bushing element is an axial bore within which a drill bit rotates during operation on a workpiece. On the exterior of the renewable bushing element is a helical shoulder which, when rotated, interlocks with a locking shoulder of the liner bushing. The invention involves a stiff wire rod, a mid-portion of which is bent to form the locking shoulder and from which legs extend to positions of snapped-on attachment to the liner bushing.

  • Patent number: 4669926
Abstract: A drill guide apparatus and method for its use is disclosed. The apparatus includes, in one embodiment, first and second vise jaws for clamping a workpiece. The vise jaws are adapted to receive a drill guide holder which includes first and second elongate members which properly position the drill guide itself. One end of each of the elongate members is attached to each of the vise jaws by pins which pass through the member and into a hole in the top of the vise jaw. The opposite ends of the elongate members are positioned above the space between the vise jaws and are hinged together by a ferrule which passes through the two members. A cylndrical drill guide which has a hole therethrough adapted in size to accept a particular size drill bit is fitted into the ferrule. The drill guide is thus located in a central position between the vise jaws above the workpiece which is clamped by the jaws.

  • Patent number: 4544307
Abstract: In its preferred embodiment this jig is a rigid foam plastic casting specific to a particular type of workpiece. It enables accurate fastening of workpiece to external structure with flathead screws. Each such workpiece has a plurality of countersunk orifices of identical size and distribution pattern. Jig and workpiece are of general rectangular plan, the jig thick enough to allow for integral functional guide holes. Jig is fitted to workpiece and the associated two held against an external structure while pilot holes are drilled into the structure through the jig guide holes centered with respect to the workpiece orifices. Proper orientation of jig to workpiece is obtained and maintained by a plurality of truncated conical protuberances on the jig extending from one of its two major parallel surfaces. These protuberances are complementary in shape and distribution pattern to the countersunk orifices of the workpiece.
