A ring is floatingly mounted on the upper portion of the rod inside the cylinder and two springs act on the floating ring: one between it and the upper end of the cylinder and the other between it and the retaining ring, both springs being uncompressed when the retaining ring is adjacent to the bottom end of the cylinder.

  • Patent number: 4813820
Abstract: A method and apparatus for in situ drilling of a precise hole in an erected structural element and inserting in such hole in pressed-fit relationship a cylindrical strain gauge. A guide block is provided having a precision hole corresponding to the diameter of the hole desired in the structural element. The guide block has unthreaded bolt holes for attachment of the guide block to the structural element and guides a reamer to produce a precise hole in the structural element. The guide block also has threaded holes for advancing a push plate against a force-transmitting bushing which is insertable through the precision hole in the guide block into abutting relationship with an end face of a cylindrical strain gauge to force the gage into press-fit relationship with the precise hole in the erected structural element.

Abstract: A portable cambearing line boring tool for an internal combustion engine with an aluminum head or a cast iron block with aluminum caps and an overhead camshaft with non-replaceable bearings that are cast in as an integral part of the cylinder head which utilizes a cutting bar formed with blind openings for receiving spring loaded cutters. Centering of the cutting bar is by the use of locating bushings selected to fit a plurality of different cam-oil-seal and/or oil-plug openings at either end of the cylinder head. The bushings remain in place during the line boring. Horizontal alignment is by alignment ears secured to the upper valve cover gasket surface. For long heads a center bar support is provided. Rotation of the bar is by a portable hand held drill.

  • Patent number: 4652188
Abstract: A centering tool for use in a chuck or collet of a drill press or milling machine enables positioning of a round or cylindrical workpiece such that its axis is precisely positioned to intersect the axis of rotation of the machine. The tool enables the efficient drilling of a hole through a cylindrical bar, perpendicular to the axis of the bar, for example. A cylindrical shank of the tool is adapted for insertion into the chuck or collet, and a centering body affixed to the shank has a generally V-shaped centering notch symmetrical about the shank's axis and having an apex line crossing the shank's axis.

Abstract: Methods and apparatus for locating and drilling pilot holes. Known systems are time-consuming and difficult to carry out and do not reliably result in straight and accurate pilot holes. The invention provides easy and accurate location and drilling and accurate alignment with an initial hole on an inaccessible surface. Clamp jaws (22, 50) are spring loaded into a closed position. Pliers (82) engage jaw (50) and head (64) of a shaft (60) extending through jaw (50) and attached to jaw (22). Pliers (82) are squeezed to move jaw (50) along shaft (60) away from jaw (22). Clamp (22, 50) is placed around a workpiece (10, 8, 15) with a pilot (38) carried by jaw (22) engaging a back surface pilot hole (16). Pliers (82) are released to allow spring (66) on shaft (60) to clamp jaws (22, 50) around workpiece (10, 8, 15). Drill bit (90) is introduced into a bushing (54) in jaw (50).

Abstract: A tooling plate for a circuit board drill wherein the locating apertures for the circuit board is located in the plate by the drill. A bushing cavity is provided in the tooling plate at the approximate desired position. An inner bushing having the locating aperture is laterally moveable in the cavity and an alignment pin in the drill chuck is positioned over the inner bushing at the desired location. The inner bushing is laterally adjusted to enable insertion of the alignment pin in the aperture. While being held in the desired position, a lock ring forces a clamping washer against the inner bushing to lock that position of the inner bushing member within the cavity.

  • Patent number: 4579486
Abstract: A hole saw guide positions a hole saw while forming a new hole either partially overlapping or surrounding an existing hole in a work piece. The hole saw guide includes a disc-shaped body having a pilot drill guide hole through the center sized to guide the pilot drill of a conventional hole saw. Two or more guide arms extend radially outwardly from the body and have outer ends which engage the inner circumference of an existing hole in the work piece to secure the guide at a desired position. The guide arms are adjustable in length radially so the pilot drill guide hole in the body can be positioned where desired. The pilot drill of a conventional hole saw is then inserted into the pilot drill guide hole which properly centers the hole saw so that the new hole formed in the work piece is properly located.

Abstract: A laser apparatus for projecting the axis of rotation of a rotating member is provided. The apparatus includes a lasing element mounted in a housing for projecting a high resolution laser beam. The housing also has a mounting stud extending therefrom substantially colinear with the laser beam but extending from the opposite end of the housing. The mounting stud is adapted to be mounted in a rotating member such as the chuck of a rotating tool. Rotation of the rotating member with the laser apparatus therein causes the laser beam to generate an annulus on an object spaced therefrom. The center of the annulus defines the true axis of rotation of the rotating member. The rotating member and/or the non-rotating member then can be realigned with respect to one another to accurately position the axis of rotation.
